WASH- Seattle, Peb. -L The steamer Evangel arrived to-day from her cruise through tbo island route. The officers relate particulars of a most revolt'ng tragedy which occurred on Shaw's island, in San Juan county, last Mouday. James Barker had gone from his home at Friday harbor for a hunt on Shaw's island, and when he did not return after a lapse of ten "days, Sheriff John Kelley of San Juan county organized a party to search for the missing man. They arrived at the cabin of one Hugh Parks, an eccentric individual living opposite Friday harbor. They were refused au entrance to the house and even a drink of water. The sheriff went to Friday harbor and swore out a warrant for Park's arrest, on the ground of insanity. The men then formed an ambush and watched the cabin. After some time Parks was seen to emerge, dragging the body of a dead man, xrhich was afterward found to be that of the missing James Barker. Parks again secured himself in the cabin. This occurred on Friday last, and for three days the cabin was closely watched, and not a sign of life within being manifested, "Wilbur Wilson, one of the sheriff's men, volunteered to enter the cabin, but on finding the door unlocked was frightened and ran back to his comrades. He again ap proached the cabin, but as he stepped into the doorway the crazy man with in shot him through the head. The sheriff and his men waited no longer, but saturating a bale of hay with coal oil they rolled it to tho cabin and fired it, burning the cabin to the ground. A second shot was fired in the cabin, but it is not cer tain whether Parks shot himself or at tho men. His charred body was after wards found in the ruins of the cabin. Desperate Fight Near Suakem. London, Feb. 4.-A special dispatch from Alexandria says: "Osman Dig ma's troops attacked a scouting force of British from the garrison at Sua kem last night Eight British were killed and several wounded." An other Alexandria dispatch says the attack by Osman Digina's followers upon the scouting party of British cavalry proves to have been a narrow escape from wholesale slaughter. The British, numbering eighty men, wore circled by 5,000 Arabs, mostly well mounted. After severe fighting the British charged in a close column through the Arab lines, aud suc ceeded in gaining shelter under the guns of Suakem. The inhabitants of Hamdab fled to the brush upon the approach of troops, leaving every thing behind them. The hussars and the Egyptians then burned the vil lage and captured camels and cattle belonging to the inhabitants. "When attacked on the return, the hussars and Egyptians were obliged to ride desperately eastward to the seacoast, and thence to Suakem. They were followed by hordes of rebels on camels. The rebel force is estimated at 50,000. Mrs. Dudley's Antecedents. London, Feb. 4. Further investi gation of the antecedents of Mrs. Dudley who shot O'Donovan Bossa, shows that when she learned sho had been deceived by a mock marriage to a person in south England, Bhe be came mad, but declined to prosecuto her betrayer. Persons intimately ac acquainted with her, say her love for her children was so intense that for along time after their deaths she daily visited their graves. A move ment has been started in Nottingham to raise a national fund to defray the expenses necessary to Mrs. Dudley's defense. A circular is being distrib uted, urgently requesting the people of Great Britain to contribute to tho fund to defend Mrs. Dudley, that heroic Englishwoman who resolved to rid civilization of its greatest ene my. Every Englishman, the appeal declares, should be ready to afford Mrs. Dudley every legal assistance. "Washington, Feb. L The secre tary of the navy has authorized Lieut Geo. M. Stoney to make a further exploration of Alaskan waters. The plan of the expedition is, in brief, that Lieutenant Stoney shall proceed to the Mare island navy yard, and superintend the construction of a steam lamfch suitable for making the proposed explorations early in the spring. Tho expedition will start from San Francisco. The party will be conveyed to tho vicinity of Put nam river, in a schooner, and further explorations will be com menced. It is expected the expedi tion will continue for at least a year. Lieutenant Stoney will leave "Wash ington on Tuesday next for San Francssco to begin preparations for the expedition. London, Feb. 4. It is stated in diplomatic circles that the Govern ments of Bussia and America are parleying in regard to a treaty for the extradition of dynamiters. Toronto, Ont, Feb. 4.--A sub scription list for tho defense of Mrs. Dudley, who attempted to ''remove O'Donovan Bossa, has been opened here. . The Manager Dietz Opera House, Mr. A. "W. Stilwell, Oakland, CaL, says: Having from personal experi ment become familiar with the re markable efficacy of St Jacobs Oil for rheumatism, I cheerfully endorse it CRI31E IN GER3IANY IX THE WESTERN PACIFIC. Germany keeps on annexing terri tory in the western aud southwestern Pacific with no more concern than as though she were on one or her an nual parades. She is not only taking possession of sundry islands lying loose about, unclaimed before by any European power, but she has had the enterprise to raise her flag on the northern coast of row tminea. bo forward has become Germany in that quarter, that the premier of Victoria two months ago invited the dovern meat of New South "Wales to join in a protest to tho home government against the German designs upon any part of New Guinea. To this invita tion the latter declined to rospond favorably on these greunds: First, it is not known whether the recent action of Germany is the result of an arrangement withtho British imperial government; second, if such arrange ment exists, the terms of it are un known; third, the possibility of ex tending the .British protectorate over New Guinea so as to include I ho shores of the island from East Cape to tho German lino of occupation; and fourth, as to whether, as a counter poise to the German occupation, Lu land may not have determined to oc cupy all the islauds which command, from a strategical point of view, tho whole of that portion of tho Pa- cinc. I' or these reasons the govern ment of New South "Wales declines to take any steps ia questions of such gravity and complexity, serious ly involving, a3 they do, the relations of the colonies with England, and her relations with the European na tions." Upon the receipt of satisfac tory information from tho home gov ernment, the government of New South "Wales will be prepared to co operate cordially with the other colo nies as to what mav be considered necessary. Meantime the agitation at Mel bourne and throughout the British possessions of that portion of the Pacific increases, A memoraiidtim drawn up by tho premier of Aus tralia, Sir James Service, and ad dressed to the governor of Victoria, summarizes the condition of affairs in this language: "Australia is not allowed to act herself, and the Impe rial government will not act on her behalf. Meautimo Australia has to stand by and see territories, the pos session of which sho regards as es sential to her safety and well-being, pass to another power." Mr. ser vice says, in this connection, that cherishing as he does the connection between the colonies and the empire, ho cannot sufficiently express his disappointment at the want of re sponse to tho aspirations of the col onies displayed by the Imperial government And the murmurings against the inactivity of the homo government are deep and continued. It is held that inaction openly invites foreign powers to come and take pos session of lands in which none are so interested as the communities of Aus tralasia. All the while Germany is busy at work annexing, raising her flag on new territory and colonizing. On "Wednesday, Matthew "Wikman, ago thirty-two years, shot himself and died five hours afterward. He was sailing up the slough near Marsh- field, Or., with a double barreled shotgun, which, in shifting tho boom, was discharged. There were 143 business failures in "Washington territory in 1SS1; liabili ties, SS4L200- Washington led all the territories in this respect, the nearest approach being by Dakota, with 117 failures, and liabilities of S729.G12. The mills of the California Bedwood company on the island, Humboldt county, have cut during the past year 26,000,000 feet of lumber and have shipped 2o,000,000. In addition to this about 10,000,000 shingles were cut Twenty-one vessels are loading with lumber at Port Blakely and Ta coma, "W. T., for foreign uorts. A sheepherder known as "Stem- winder" Smith, who was herding sheep at Agency Plains, Crook coun ty, Or., was frozen to death recently. Of his band of 2300 sheep only two were found alive. If she knows what is best for her she will take Brown's Iron Bitters, which will speedily build up her constitution, enrich her blood, and give her strength and health.
