O'Donovan Eossa -was sbot at six o'clock to-night, at the corner of Broadway and Cham bers street, by a woman giving the name of Miss Dnncan of England. Eossa was taken to the hospital, but the wound is not thought to be dan gerous. Later Eossa was shot in the back under the right shoulder, in front of the Stewart building, by a woman named Yseult Hudley. The pistol was thiity-two calibre. She fired five shols, one only taking effect It is said she was a nurse, and came from En gland five months ago. She had an in terview with Eossa on Saturday at his office. The appointment- was made by letter from him to her. The woman is handsome. She drew the revolver from her dress pocket and fired one shot. Eossa threw his hands above his head and cried, "I'm shot!" and fell heavily. The woman then fired the four remaining shots at the prostrate man and calmly walked away. A policemau saw the pistol and arrested her. He did not know she had shot any one till sTio said at the station she had shot Eos sa. She is calm and dignified and refused to say why she shot him, but it is presumed through revenge for the London explosion. Eossa occupies a cot a short dis tance from Captain Phelan. The ball took an upward course, and is not necessarily fataL At 8 o'clock to-night the physicians considered Eossa's condition worso and the coroner was summoned to take his ante-mortem statement He said the woman came to him Saturday and represented herself as in favor of the Irish cause and had adarge sum of money to help the cause along. She appointed a meeting for to-day in the Stewart building There she wanted him to sign a paper on behalf of dynamite. Ho told her he was not receiving money for that purpose. She remarked that the place was too puoiic to transact ousiness ana sug gested they go somewhere else. On reaching tlie pavement tlie woman fell behind and commenced shooting without a word. Mrs. Eossa arrived at the hospital at 10 o'elock and appeared greatly moved. Eossa said to a friend he had no doubt the shooting was the work of the British government The "womin said she was a Twidow,i aged 25. She is handsome and intel ligent in appearance, and is not insane or a crank. When pressed for reasons forshootingshe would only say, "lam English, and shot him because he is O'Donovan Eossa." She will be ar raigned in the Tombs police court to morrow. London, Feb. 2. The first news of Eossa's shooting was received at mid night and caused the wildest excite ment, and expressions of general sat isfaction and much hand shaking and hurrahing, and lauding as a heroine the female assassin of the despised dynamiter. New York, Feb. 2. O.Donovan Eossa recently received the following letter, signed "Nemesis," from Pitts burg, Penn: Friend: I and four of my compan ions have vowed to rid the earth of your loathsome presence. "We have just received the news of the last das tardly doings m London, by which one of us has lost a near relative. Threo of my friends have been tracking your footsteps for the last twenty eight hours, and I shall arrive in New York on Monday, and I pledge my word as an Englishman that wherever and whenever I meet you, either in public or private, I will send a bullet through, your cowardly heart You are a coward and a monster, but I know you to be a cowardly assas sin, and my friends and England shall no longer suffer at the hands of a viper who is afraid to strike as a man who by God's help shall be shot as a venomous beast. I am here Eetribution for our murdered coun trymen. The Champion Youth Walker of Australia, Mr. Bernard Murphy, says: "Previous to the match with Ormes of Sydney, I was attacked with the "stitch,' when a friend advised me to try St. Jacobs Oil. I did so, rubbing a little on my side. I have not been troubled since, and won my match." General C. B. Lamborn, land com missioner of the Northern Pacific railroad, in company with Paul bchulzc, is making a reconnoissanco of the country lying immediately north of Yakima river to determine the practicability of a largo ditch to supply the great body of land with water for irrigating purposes. It is proposed, if arrangements can be made, to take out a large proportion of the water from the Yakima river, at a point near Ellensburg, and dis tribute the water over an area of about 3,000,000 acres. Several capi talists havo made an offer to pur chase this immense tract of land pro vided the scheme is practicable, and that is the reason of General Lam born's tour of inspection at this time. A NEW CRIME UNDER THE SUN. "When old Anderson Bromley an nounced himself as caudidatc fur justice of the peace, the people of Buck Short towuBhtp felt that the time when they were to have an able and upright administration of judi cial affairs had arrived. OldBrnmley had uevcr opened a law book; there fore lie was regarded as honest He had never hesitated to take off his coat and fight the best man m the neighborhood; therefore he was-con- sidered able. He had never been backward in denouncing his enemies: consequently ho was regarded as a citizen of wisdom. "With these ac complishments. hi3 election, iu the ex pressive parlance of politics, was a "walkover."' Shortly after Brumley took his seat on the red oak woolsack, a man named Billy Malone was ar rested for stealing a grindstone. 'This here is a mighty important case," said the magistrate, wheu the culprit had been arraigned before court. "In lookin' over these here law books, I don't find no mention of grindstones. It was a big oversight in our legislature not to put down grindstones in the books, nr it mout have been knowed that some blamed rascal in this part o' the state was a coin to steal one. Folks in this hero part o' the country, let me tell you, will steal anything. "Wa'al in the ab sence o' any statuary barin on the subjeck, reckon I'll make this here charge manslaughter in the first de gree." "Your honor," eaid a lawyer, ''that would be impossible." "Wood it? "Great Caesar, judge, such a course as you are taking is a violation of the state constitution." "Is it? Wa'al Til jest repeal the state constitution right here.
