Prescriptions carefully Compounded ji There is no occupation bo grand, so noble, and tbat which makes one so independent as farming. It gives you an opportunity for mental cul ture during the winter, and physical strength during tho summer. It is a home where good morals can be en tertained without those allurements which are always" predominant in city life. He who tills the soil is engaged in an honorable occupation. Agricul ture is the greatest among the arts, for it is first in supplying our neces sities; it favors and strengthens populatien: it creatos and maintains manufactures; gives employment "to navigation and materials to com merce. It is also the strongest bond of well regulated society, the surest basis of internal peace, the natural associate of good morals. So the j oung man who desires to leave the farm and go out into the wido world for himself, perhaps to some far off city, or some spot on his native land, where ho imagines there will be a. paradise open for him; such a step in life should be well considered before taken. It is a good thing to fit yourself for a lawyer, a doctor, a minister, but it is a better thing to know that you can be one. Young men, favored with everv opportunity for enjoyment at home, and not overworked, imagine that they can do better than to guide the ox, or to turn the stubborn glebe. And, with the merest triGe of consid eration, the hands are withdrawn from the implements of agriculture and given to the office or the shop work of the city. And thus thou sands of young men are utterly ruined. If they would only stop and think, "What can I make of ray self?" The question, 'To what is my abili ty mostly adapted?" Then they might go fonvard into life's journey with a better prospect of success. "Ever remember," writes Gold thwait, "that for health and substan tial wealth, for rare opportunities, for solf-improvement, for long life and real independence farming is the best business in the world." VVLUK OFSMVLL THINGS. The JOiabaitdman of E.mira, X.i 1., teaches a lesson in brief when it says: "A grain of wheat is small, when considered by itself insignifi cant. It is but the merest fraction of appreciable value, yet it is typical of the interest that engages attention from nearly half our people- the farming interest. To get this grain of wheat the farmer must havo fitted the soil, sown the seed, cared for the crop to the harvest, gathered it, thrchhed it, and all these operations have filled the year. His rewards are fairly typified by tho insignificant kernel of wheat that must be multi plied a thousand fold before it has practical utility in feeding his family or supporting commerce and giving him that full return for labor which is hia just due. Tho lesson to bo de rived from the grain of wheat has deep import for farmers who find profit and loss separated by but the narrowest margin. The little things must be put to use and from them must be obtained the fullest value if profit is to be realized. Failing in this regard, loss is almost certain. The farmer deals every day of his life in small things, but in tho aggregate these little things make the commerce of the world. He produces food for all mankind and the fiber from which their raiment is wrought. His mis sion is of first importance, and al though it relates almost wholly to small things, if he be not faithful to them and watchful to make the most of Irs opportunities, distress falls, not only upon him and his family, but upon tho world. He must multiplv the grain of wheat indefinitely, and he must care for the increase judici ously and constantly or fail of his re wards." A 3Ian With Six Wires. A man with six wives is likely to go to jail for bigamy, which, after all, may not be much more disagreeable than trying to live with six women at a time. Either course is not more disagreeable than to be afflicted with dyspepsia and liver complaint. Frank Jones, of Cothrans, Texas, writes, "I am using Brown's Iron Bit ters for dyspepsia and debility, and it has done me a great deal of benefit," Any other man may receive similar advantage. It also cures malaria, weakness, neuralgia, etc. The area of the British colonies is nearly 8,000,000 of square miles rather less that the area of tho Rus sian empire, including Siberia and Central Asia; but if the area of the native feudatory states in India, amounting to 509,284 square miles, be aaaed, over which England exercises as great control as Bussia does over much of tho territory under its sway. together with, that of tho United Kingdom itself, 120,757 miles, then the area of the British empire exceeds that of the Russian empire by about 200,000 square miles, and it covers within a fraction of one-sixth of the whole land area of the globe. The star chamber policy of the house commit tee on rivers and harbors has in censed a great many members. The usual privilege of going before the committee to be heard on their dis tricts was this year entirely withheld. This naturally aroused a good deal of resentment The only way for con- jgressmen to be heard on the improve-! inents is to take the bull bv the horns in tho house and push amendments there to iueroase needed appropria tions. This course will be pursued by a number of western members who feel dissatisfied. It is said also that the rule laid down bv tho com mittee to allow only twouty-five cents of every dollar asked has not been lived up to, especially the appropria tions asked for. New York, Feb. 1. -The commit tee having in charge the raising of funds for the Bartholdi pedestal, be ing confident that congress will pass the bill appropriating $100,000 for thatwork, are no longer pushing for funds in other directions. The original estimate of cost for the pedestal was $230,000. About $160,000 has been raised by popular subscription, and with the congressional appropriation and what is yet to come from the state and local committees, there will be an ample sum to meet all expenses. Don't Give Up Yet. It doesn't follow that a patient will die because the doctors have "given him up."' or that he will recover because tlicv promise to "null him through.' It is never to late to try the great irtues of Parker's Tonic. "Mr. Michael Guil fovlc. of Binejhatnton,?". Y., was cured of Rlii'iimatisin by it after ten years of unspeakable suffering. 3Ir. R. Y. Mother, druggist, of same city, certifies that he has sold over a thousand bottles of Parker's Tonic through its reputa tion for tins ami oilier cures. "Who knows a prettier vine of gen eral ornament than the hop? We habitually associate tho hop with tho pole3 and tho commercial air or the hop-yard, but when viewed in its na tive beauty, as it clambers over fences or saplings, it possesses a modest and clean beauty which one can find in few other vines. .Let ono climb over a shrub or small tree near the house, and you cannot fail to admire its careless aspect and its penuant uaii of yellow and green. Plant a root at the baso of the tree, manure it well, and then enjoy the plant from the appearance of the first light green flexile shoot to the brown-tint balls of Autumn. "When the vine dies in the fall remove it to the ground. The next year the samo roots will send up the same garlands. Deputy Sheriff, Air.
