The San Francisco newspapers
contain long accounts of the infa
mous traffic going on there of selling
white babies to Chinese. It is shown
that.the business ib mainly carried
on through the agency of private es
tablishments termed "lying-in hospi
tals and homes for foundlings. ' The
matrons of these places charge $50,
if tbe mother desires to keep the
baby, -but only from $20 to $30 if the
mother gives up all claim to it. In
the latter case it becomes the proper
ty of the .matron, who sells tbe baby
over again to whoever she can find
that will pay the most for it In this
way many of these unfortunates have
been sold to the Chinese. The latter
payjnore for female babies than male
ones. The Evening Post,' referring
to the iniquitous practice of white
mothers selling their illegitimate off
spring to the Chinese says: "Wo are
informed, upon tho very best author
ity, that these children are pnrcbased
in many cases by Chinese speculators,
and sent to China, where they are
raised until they are twelve years of
age, and then sold to wealthy China
men for large sums of momey, to be
placed by them in their harems. One
of the most dreadful phases of slave
trading is going on in our midst, and
if strong measures are not taken to
stop it at once it will be a disgraco to
our city and our civilization."
