f) Site gaitjj gtftotm AS.TOEIA, OKEGON: FRIDAY JANUARY SO. 1885 THE INAUGURATION BALL FUND. The Washington papers are pub lishing long lists of subscribers to the inauguration fund. On their face these lists speak well for the patriotism and public spirit of citi zens of the capital. Looked at in the light of hard facts these publications are found to be conveyances of a good deal of advertising at very cheap rates. When it comes to something the government is concerned in these thrifty Washington people never get the small end of the trade. They are now engaged in contributing to the inauguration fund, but that is not an out-and-out gift, but rather a guar antee fund. If a fire or a cyclone should sweep away the pension build ing just previous to inauguration day then these subscribers would have to enter up their respective sums to profit and loss. Just as sure, how ever as the inauguration ball is given in accordance with the programme, they wi;l receive credit for public spirit; will have their fun, will expe rience the manifold advantages to be derived from the presence of great throngs of money spenders, and will get most, if not all, their money back in a dividend. The price of tickets haB been fixed at 85. Basing calculations on provions events of this character, the committee count on 12,000 patrons. This means SG0,000 for admission alone. Thai will pay all tbe expenses which fhe committee incurs for the day's and night's celebration. Four years ago, in settling up after inau guration day, the managers found themselves able to return all the money that had been subscribed as a guarantee. There is no reason to doubt but that a similarly good show ing will bo made this year. Perhaps this will explain the readiness with which the members of the committee, to start the fund, assessed themselves $100 apiece. There is another inter esting phase to this subscription bus iness. The Democrats of Washing ton have already defined their posi tion under the principle, "to the vic tors belongs the spoils." Numerous associations and clubs, many of which were never heard of previous to last November, have resolved that it should bo tho policy of the incoming administration to appoint to the dis trict offices only citizens of the dis trict. In the list of big subscribers to the fund which appears in Wash ington papers arc to bo found five local candidates for the office of reg ister of wills, worth about $G,000 a year; seven for register of deeds, which pays S9.000 annually: nine for district commissioner and four for postmaster of Washington. Out of 1,120 steam vessels which sailed from New York to Europe dur ing 188-i, carrying 42,9G1,799 bushels of grain, there was not a single one over which floated the stars and stripes. Of the 101 sailing vessels, carrying 2,431,937 bushels, just precisely two of the bottoms were American. They sailed in February, and they carried G9,35i bushels; of these ships it is said that they can only technically claim to be American. Practically the United States has no part nor lot in the grain-carrying trade from New York, and Great Britain leads the list. She had GG1 steamers last year from the grain trade alone, while the aggregate of all other nations was only 459. The uses of mediocrity are for every-day life, but tho uses of genius, amid a thousand mistakes which mediocrity never commits, are to sug gest and perpetuate i leas which raise the standard of the mediocre to a nobler level. There would be far fewer men of good sense if there were no erring dreamers of genius. The world usually pushes a man the way he wants to go. If he makes up his mind to ascend in the scale of worldly prosperity, people push him up. If he shows a disposition to go down, he is helped with great good will to go down. In the latter case the natural tendency of gravitation accelerates tho motion. The victory of Gen. Stewart re sults in the complete demoralization of the False Prophet He still has a largo contingency of troops, but tho fanatical zeal which inspired them has been destroyed by successive de feats. A national silver convention, hav ing for its object the organization of systematic opposition to the proposed demonetization of silver is in session in Denver, Colorado; 1,000 delegates are present. The Oregonian urges the repeal of the statuio that permits deduction of indebtedness. It argues that if that obnoxious statute were repealed the source of nearly all tho frauds in as sessessment would be cut off, and the burdens of taxation would be dis tributed with nearer approach to equality than under the present un wise system. It takes precisely the same stand that The Astoiiian has taken since the argument begun and is a powerful ally in opposing the present ridiculous system which places a premium on fraud. NEW TODAY.
