They were consigned to some interior towns forty or fifty miles from the city, and were of the style, make and finish so long in use. An old man, "with a slouched hat pulled down so far over his face that his email, fast blinking eyes were hid from view, stood a little way back on the wharf and talked to a young man whom he had halted and asked for a match. "Millstones have nearly gono out of date," said he, with a halt mournful air, "and with them has gone the occupation I have followed for thirty years. See here," and tho old man crowded his hat over on the back part of his head and lifted his face for the first time into plain sight. It was pitted all over with number less ugly dimples, depressions, and cuts and looked, as :f he might some day have had tho smallpox. "Do you know how that was done?'' he asked. The young man did not know. uBy picking millstones," was the quick volunteered information. "No one who has ever followed the business of giving those stones that keen cut texture that enables them to crush and grind grain can escapo these cuts and scars. "Why, my face is literally filled up with little parti cles of steel and stone, and my eyes have seasons of paining me terribly. But the profession has about run its race. In ten years the dictionary makers will put the word 'obsolete after the noun 'millstone.' Modern inventions have relegatod the time honored millstone to oblivion. New processes have been discovered for extracting flour from the wheat, be side which the millstone has no show." The young man began to grow in terested. He drew his companion into tho doorway of a little switch shanty, secured permission for the two to sit down a moment before the fire and askedhim to continue. "Nowadays," said the old man, "wheat is crushed between rollers, and the flour produced is much su peaior to the old make. Then, too, the bran, that was once thought to' bo almost worthless, is now sifted by . anew process, and a quality of flour is separated that is worth forty or ! hfty cents more per sack than the common variety. You have heard that tho best part of a potato lay just beneath the skin. Eecent scientific experiments havo shown that it is truQiof all vegetables, especially of the wheat This suggested the con-J struction of a sieve that would sep arate the little particles of the kernel that cling to the shuck when it has been broken up and ground to pieces. It was successful and the flour se cured in this way, while small in quantity, is of superior quality. This latter process was only made possible by the new method of grinding wheat that has been generally adopted by all the large mills in this country. But in the mean time my occupation has been gradually undermined. Once in a while I have a call to go somewhere into the country to dress a stone, but it is very seldom. "Most of the millstones in use in this country are of French burr, a sillicious rock, containing many small rough cavities, and requiring less preparation than a perfectly plain stone. It is quarried in the geologi cal district known as the 'Paris basin.' A quarry has been worked for many years in the valley of the Savannah river, about one hundred miles above tho city of Savannah, and the quality of the stones secured are said to bo almost equal to those produced in Prance. The lower stone has gen erally a smooth grinding surface. Tho moving stone is hollowed toward the center to allow the material ground to flow freely between the grinding surfaces. The faces of both stones have to bo cut with straight groves in direction inclined radii. The edges of the groves are thus given a cutting action somewhat resembling that of scissor blades, and a tendency to force the grain outward toward tho circumference is secured, this ac celerating tho feeding and avoiding choking. To do this work perfect re quires an enormous amount of prac tice, and an apprentice must serve four or fivo years on cheap stones be fore he is allowed to touch the most valuable ones. Machines were once invented to do the cutting but they were not a success. It was a hard business to learn, and in its day very profitable. Modern innovations, how ever, have no sympathy for working men, and in ten years it is doubtful if there will be a mill-stone in use in this country." False! False! False! Four million of false teeth are man ufactured in this country in a year. This is a true statement, and it is also true that the decay of natural teeth has greatly increased among people who do not take good care of tneir stomachs. When your stomach is out of order, and your digestive powers need toning up, try Brown's Iron Bitters. There are somo prepa rations of iron which injure the teeth, but tho doctors testify Brown's Iron Bitters is free from the objection. An eastern paper shouts that the silver dollars must go. will some body kindly inform tho eastern pa per that the silver dollar does go. It goes fast, too. A little too fast for a man on a small salary. It goes in droves or singly. It goes anywhere and everywhere. In this part of tho oountry there is nothing that has more go to it than the silver dollar. The Oldest Senator. Justin S. Merrill of Vermont is the oldest United States senator. He will be 75 years of age next April He has had as long continuous ser vice as Clay or Benton, and longer than any one at present in public life. He has been in congress since 1855. He was a member of the house from that period until 1S67. He has been in the senate ever since. He has been recently elected for another term. If he should live to the end of that term he would be 81 years old. This would give him a record of thirty-live years in congress. This is a longer record of continuous service than any ouc has yet made in our history. There is no reason why he should not live to the cud of his torm, and even longer. The senator is in most excellent health, and looks fully as young to day as maHy men in the senate fifteen years younger than he. He appears to have a better lease of life than his colleague, who is nearly twenty years younger than he. A stranger" would not think there was much difference in the ages of the Vermont senators. An interesting discovery is report ed to have been niado by the govern or of Irkutsk in the course of a pro longed inspection of the province, which shows that Siberia is still an unknown country, even to the Rus sian authorities. His excellency camo across the little town of Him, with 500 inhabitants, 160 houses and four ancient churches, with remarkable relics of Cossack times. It is still under the republican rale of a vetche or public assembly, convoked by a bell, as in the time or old Novgorod the great, although the new munici pal institutions were supposed to have been applied to that part of the empire ten years ago. Not one of the inhabitants can read or write. The Vancouver Independent says: The special agents of the interior de partment are making matters lively for men who havo perjured them selves in giving testimony on land proofs. Two weeks ago special agent Stnbbs brought one man back from "NVTir Vnrlr in lm trim! in f tin nnrl term of conrt, and last week, George i Taylor, an employee of the Columbia Biver Lumbering Company, was ar-, rested for frauds committed in Cow litz county. Dr. Charles Large is also implicated on the same charge. Ed ward Bodiue of Kalnma has also bsen arrested on a similar charge. Per haps several more cases will be brought on at the next term of court. In Norway and Sweden accumu lations of moss, often more than a foot thick and half de composed, serve to make paper and mill-board as hard a3 the wood, blocks of which formed by the hydraulic press may even be turned in the lathe and polished. This sub stance is said to possess the good qualities of wood without the defects,' such as warping and splitting, sol that it is sutiable for making doors and windows. Plant has, it is said, ' been laid down in Sweden for working! up these deposits of a hitherto waste substance into a useful material. A youugminister said several times, when giving some exposition of a passage: "The critics and commen tators do not agree with me here." Next morning a poor woman camo to see him with something in her apron, saying, as she inquired for "the mas ter, "He said m his sermon yester day, 'The common taters did not agree with him here,' sol have brought him somo of the very best Jersey Blues." Tho Yakima Indians thought thev could improve on tho work of the Northern Pacific engineers. After tho stakes were driven by tho engin eers some of them came along, pulled up the stakes on the prairie and set them over in tho wagon road, at tue same timo remarking: "That road has been traveled a good many years and we guess it will do for the railroad.' Tho schooner Lizzie Prlen, lately built on the Coquille, is loading lum ber at the Marshfield mill. Tho schooner was chartered for Smith river, but was unable to enter that place. Coyotes are worth S10 at Knox Butte. Linn county. This is from the action of those living in tue im mediate vicinity, who are determined to rid the Butte of their presence. Poonu, Cedar Hapids, Mich., says: "1 have used jour Emulsion for several 3 cars, in my prac tice and have always found it thor oughly reliabl?, pleasant to take, and most valuable for throat and lungtrouh les." The question of branding cattle is again being considered by Montana stockmen. Abide not branded will bring SI to S1.50 mora than one side branded, and tho present custom is estimated to cost Montana breeders about $1,000,093 a year.
