ASTORIA, OREGON:
TUESDAY JANUARY 27, 16S5
AUTOMATIC ARCTIC EXPLORA
TION. Pkobablt the most wonderful
thing in the whole sad history of
Arctic exploration is the recent dis
covery of an ice floe in the waters of
Davis' strait west of Greenland
which had drifted from a point in
the Arctic ocean northeast of the
Lena delta where the crew of the
Jcanelte divided into three parties
and look to the open waters to the
southernmost point of Greenland,
and north again to Baffiu's bay. Up
on this floe were a corpse, and many
indubitable relics of the expedition,
including an article of wearing appar
el marked with the name of Seaman
Noros, who. it will be remembered, in
company with seaman Nindermann
went a few miles ahead of poor De
Long, and lived to write the most ex
traordinary experience ever penned
by a human hand. Had these two
simple seamen been able to tell, in
the Siberian tongue, that their com
rades were only eleven miles back'
the whole Do Long party would have
lived to join Alelville and Dancn
howor. Now, the floe discovered by the
Greenlanders has, perhaps, crossed
directly over the North Pole. Prom
the Jeanneite floe to the southern
point of Greenland, in a direct lino
across the pole, is 3,500 miles, but by
way of the northern shore of Asia and
Europe past Capo Northeast, Nova
Zerabla, Spitzbergen, and Iceland,
and north again into Baffin's bay
would bo a distance of at least 6,000
miles. Scientifically the life of a
moving ice-floo for so many years,
and its migration from one side of
the world to the othcr ought to fur
nish suggestions and data more val
uable than all the other fruits of
polar research combiued. Self-regis-ing
meteorological apparatus, and
possibly guages of the miles traveled,
may in future reveal to the investiga
tors what the sacrifice of thousands
of lives has otherwise failed to dis
cover. In Hungary each member of the
imperial legislative body receives for
every day of the session about $2.40,
besides S100 annually for lodging; in
Austria about S5 a day during the
session. Prance pays her senators
and deputies about $2,250 per annum;
Holland about $850 per annum and
traveling expenses; Belgium $84 a
month during the session; Norway
about $3.30 a day and traveling ex
penses; Portugal, $2.50 per diem.
Members of the Canadian parliament
receive, for every session lasting over
a month, $1,000 and 10 cents mileage;
Brazil gives to her senators Sl,800 for
the session, and to the representatives
$1,200 and traveling expenses; Mexico
allows the members of both houses
$2,000 per annum; the Argentine Re
public even goes as high as $3,500;
and in the United States both sena
tors and members of the houso of
representatives receive S5,000 annual
ly, with mileage at 20 cents per mile,
Lelvnd Stanford, California's
new senator, announces his intention
to make some valuable public be
quests, and, of course, the California
newspapers are abusing him. Jas.
Lick is the only Californian that ever
gave the state anything in the way of
public buildings or endowments, and
twothirds of the people are to-day of
the opinion that ho was crazy. Tho
next thing will bo a surmise that
Stanford is "loco." Tho average
Californian cannot account for such
unusual action in any other way.
The immigration by the Northern
Pacific railroad during 18Si was 13,
263. This includes intending settlers
in tho east to points in Oregon and
Washington territory west of Spo
kane Palls. Tho heaviest months
were: March, 2,415: April 2,408;
May, 1,741. It is estimated that the
immigration by steamer from Cali
fornia and by team into eastern and
southern Oregon is about equal to
tho above figures, making ono year's
immigration fully 25,000.
Lloyd's Shipping Gazette, in tho
last issue, has a long alarmist article
on the probable climatic effect of the
cutting of the isthmus of "Panama
canal and thus diverting the Golf
stream. It draws the picture of a
reindeer again being huntod on the
Riviera, and tho walrus playing on
the ice-wall around uninhabited Eng
laud. In the senate last Saturday, Ed
munds submitted a bill directed
against manfacturera or handlers of
dynamite or other explosives meant
for the destruction of public or pri
vate property iu this country or a
foreign conntry, making such manu
facturing or handling a felony.
The secretary of tho treasury has
decided the question which has been
pending for some time involving tho
duty on tin plate. Tho law puts tho
duty at ono cent per pound on tho
article commercially known as tin
plate, The secretary, however, de
cides that all sheets of iron coated
purely with tin come within tho class
of tin plate, quotable at one cent per
pound, without distinction as to size
or thickness.
The female juror feature of Wyo
ming territory's system is a success
in more ways than one. Two of tho
members of a recent jury, after con
victing a faro dealer, went and got
married. They had met for the first
time in the jury box.
"Your Honor may dismiss the jury;
every man there owes mo for a suit of
clothes," is tho way a St. Paul tailor
nolle pros'd a case against a. county
official whom ho was suing for tho
price of a job of work one day week
before last
The only legal ballot cast for Bclva
Lockwood is supposed to bo the ono
reported from Illinois. This was for
a regular set of electors, with the
voter himself at tho head, while all
the others were for the woman di
rectly. A few weeks ago tho legislature of
Georgia authorized tho employment
of women in clerical work, and as a
result of the experiment thus far ex
perts say that the work has been done
50 per cent better than when done by
men.
The business of cutting and ex
porting tho mahogany of Honduras is
in the hands of a monopoly which
has such valuable concessions from
tho government that competition is
impossible.
Large numbers of colored people,
who emigrated to Kansas a year er
two ago, now find tho climate too se
vere, and are leaving for New Mexico
and other points in the southwest.
The original fellows who first pro
posed Cleveland for president all ex
pect to bo on hand on the 4th of
March. That is tho reason tho rail
roads are likely to be short of cars.
Colorado has not lived ten years
as a slate under its present constitu
tion, but it is already tired of tho in
strument, and wants a convention
called to frame a new one.
The entire building fund of a
Methodist society in a Michigan city
is said to have been lost at faro by
two of tho trustees.
