Aa Alleged Dynamiter on His Way to San Francisco. Chicago. Jan. 23. The Tribunfs Kansas City, Mo., special says: An in fernal dynamite machine "was discov ered at the east end of the Hannibal and St Joe railroad bridge at this point earlythis morning. The ma chine consisted of a "tin box abont twelve inches square, covered with black cloth and containing fully twelve pounds of dynamite, packed so as to be carried safely. The box was found by a railroad laborer, whoso curiosity got the better of him, and he pried the box lid off, exposing the contents. He then brought it over and delivered it to tho police authori ties of this city. Shortly after this discovery it "became known in dotect ive circles that there were two Lon don detectives in this city, and after a great deal of trouble a reporter in terviewed one of them, who admitted hi3 ..profession, but concealed his name. He stated that the package of dynamite was thrown off of last night's Wabash train from Chicago. He says the person who threw it off was .one John Meehan, a weii-known Irish conspirator whom tho detect ives have been shadowing ever since he left England by the steamer Both nia four weeks ago. Both detectives came over in the same ship and landed in New York on the day of the at tempted assassination of Captain Phelan. Meehan reported at once at the office of O'Donovan Bossa. The de tectives shadowed him and found that he obtained a package of dyna mite in New York and started west a few days ago. They followed him and were on the point of capturing him last night, when, becoming alarmed, Meehan threw the dyna mite out of a car window. Tho de tectives made no attempt to arrest him afterwards, but allowed him to take a train for San Francisco, ono of them taking passage on the same train and the other remaining here. The detective says Meehan was, it is supposed, delegated by the Irish dynamiters to execute some holl'sh outrage, and the theory is that he is on his way to Australia i blow np a prison where Fenian prisoners are confined. This is in substance the story the Journal will print upon what it claims as exclusive informa tion well authenticated and thor oughly reliable. The police authori ties wore approached regarding tho matter, but beyond admitting tho fact of finding a box of dynamite, they are silent Bov. Mr. Browning, of Salem, is resting from recent mission labors. His latest work has been with the good people of Hwaco, by tho sound ing sea, where he has delivered sev eral sermons and held prayer meetings night after night in tho school-house, tho only church which that town as yet affords. Mr Browning is a Bap tist and denounces dancing with all the severity which the most rigid be liever in that creed could possibly desire. Now, the townsfolk of Ilwa co are not sated with tho customary amusements of life, and whenover they can get a fiddler and a largo enough room, it matters little where, they like to have a dance. So the Bev. Mr. Browning and his hearers did not agree on this ono question, and one of their number undertook to convince the missionary, who had come among them in this wise: "Some people aro firm believers in what the Bible tells, and that's just what ails us. It is writ in that bless ed book that thero is a time when to danco and wo believe it; and that is just whenever you can get fellows and girls enough together to make up a set!" "When I first came into the treas ury," Bays Assistant Secretary Coon, "I bad occasion to write a communi cation for Treasurer Spinner one da. He took the letter, read it through carefully, and with a premonitory 'hump said, 'Yes, that i3 very good, but what does it mean? I explained very fully, and he looked at me over his spectacles and remarked: 1 un derstand it now, but tho other fellow may not Young man, whenever you write a letter write as though you were addressing a fool!' I have tried to follow his advice." Indian apolis Journal. Pretty Pinre-Xalls. I used Brown's Iron Bitters and now weigh 170 pounds." Borne is said to be filled with Ital ians, a circumstance which seems to merit comment from its unusual oc currence. Scett'sKmHlatea efPnre Ced. A CHICAGO SENSATION Discovery of a Select Lot of Infernal JIachlne. Chicago, Jan. 23. A young man whose real name is Otto Funk was arrested last night for having in his possession a large number of books stolen from the public library. The books which were seized at his resi dence, were found to be in large box es, and these boxes were removed to the new City- Hall building to-day, when the discovery was made that among them were six or seven infer nal machines containing dynamite, any one of which was sufficient to blow up such a building. Consterna tion prevailed at police headquarters when the discovery was made, and a startling number oi rumors were at once put afloat. Funk when ques tioned, said he was only experiment ing. The matter is still a mystery. The box found among the stolen books was a foot long and six inches deep. Inside of it was a lot of saw dust packed about a revolver. The sawdust was saturated with glycer ine. A little crank made of thick wiro was attached to the outside of tho box. Another box, about twice tho size of the first one described, was filled with a dozen packages of dynamite Funk has been known as J. O. Talbort and was a student at tho Chicago medical college, and con tends that ho was experimenting for scientific purposes only. Tho detec tives, however, are divided in their views and contend that ho intended to commit suicide if arrested. Tho statement was also made that he was an active socialist, but this was de nied. The statement is made by the police that if tho machine had ex ploded, its force would have certaiuly destroyed tho City Hall building and occasioned frightful loss of life. ITEMS FROM ABROAD.
