It must be confessed that the diffi culties of doiug a good, square busi ness in a good, thorough, square style are becoming greater and hard or than ever to combat. Honest and honorable competition has given vray largely to a series of petty shifts to gain a mean advantage, and the busi ness man has frequently to encounter bold and unscrupulous lying among his rivals. If young in business and need', he must solicit favors from men lie despises, and have transac tions with others -whom otherwise ho would scorn to associate with; that it is a maCtcr of difficulty to be his plain, honest self; but it seems as if he must go on in the Exchange or in to the business world with a set of actions, pretenses, and even express ions that does not belong to him but is assumed for that particular pur pose, and all too often the assump tion gradually absorbs other and better qxtalities of mind and heart und becomes his real character. Is he disposed to s 11 pure and unadulterated goods, he finds his rival taking away his trade by an inferior article offered at a lower price, but affirmed to bo its equal in every particular; does he do his work faithfully and use the best materials, ho finds himself underbid by a skillful competitor, who cunning ly works in inferior material with careless and cheap labnr, and, worst of all, the buyers will give the cheap bidder, even when the quality of his goods and workmanship are sus pected, a readier hearing. Then what an immense advantage the squarely dishonest man of to-day possesses; he who does not mean to pay, who buys on credit without capi ial, and contents himself with a mere fractional profit, or no profit at all, making a failure, and being consid ered rather honorable because he pays 50 cents on the dollar p his creditors; creditors who allow him ' go on with his slock of goods in direct competi tion with the honorable men on the other side of the street, selling the self-same goods bought of them at the self-same first price, which they expect the solvent party to pay in full lor. Does he originate a popular arti cle, a method in business, or any in vention that promises a profit, let him be prepared for imitators who boldly claim his ideas as their own, and others who will dub a worthless article with the title lie has originated, and there by bring the name into disrepute. We know that this keen race to be rich, in the fierce struggle for the ad vance in the fight for success, it will be said that every man who enters the business field must expect the above to be the rnle and not the exception, and the amount of praise given to smart rascals, and the knowledge that the world's first question is not how a man got his money, but has he got it, would seem to indorse this conclu sion. Bnt in spite of this, men have proved that it pays to combat all these obstacles, which are principally ef forts for a short road to wealth, and stick to sterling, sturdy, old fashioned honesty in trade, which tells in the long run, not withstanding it may take a long run to make it tell. But there is a large class that will pay for it and pay handsomely; hence, though confi dence may be of small growth, the labor of rightly acquiring it proves its value, so that, besides the con scientious satisfaction enjoyed in the possession, it will be acknowledged, even as a business move, that "hon esty is the best policy." It has been said that the history of the civil war in the United States has never been written. There is enough of truth in the remark to excite at tention. It does not follow, however, that it never will be written, for every year is adding to the rich, fund of authentic information concerning the greatest war in the world's his tory. The leaders on"bothides have given publicity to their views and recollections, and in the Ventury for February i3 begun a series of papers by Gen.' Grant, who in writing can say "all of which I saw and part of which I was." He tells of the battle of Shiloh, fought April Gth and 7th, 18G2, and throws light on much that was heretofore obscure. The death of Albert Sj'dney Johnston, at the same battle, is also well told in the same number of the Century by his TnEKE are two spheres in which every individual should live an intel ligent and useful life: One is the so , cial cirole, the other is the city or community whore he lives. Thus there are two kinds of intelligence necessary to a right conduct of life. A man must have a knowledge of so cio! affairs and personal duties that 1 IT he may be a good neighbor, an intel ligent counselor in time of trouble, a worthy townsman and a useful man among men. But there is a wider field in which he must also act. No matter how humble his station, he is a member of the great public com munity, and he has duties and privi leges as such which ho cannot neglect with safety or ignore without danger to himself and all who are connected with him. These latter are at the bot tom of all his personal and social conduct and constitute the great bal ance power of our modern life. A .London special gives an account of a dastardly attempt to blow up the English bouses of parliament Such an outrage merits the execra tion of civilized man the world over. Ireland has grievous wrongs and owes England a debt of revenge that grows with the centuries of misrule, but Phoenix park assassinations and cowardly attempts to wreak havoc such as are telegraphed this morning have but one result, to bring her cause into merited contempt and in definitely postpone the day of her de liverance. That useful instrument the tele graph brings us daily news concern ing the drunken exploits of a brute named Sullivan. One day he has insulted a lady in a restaurant; the next day "Paddy RyaiT hits him and ho hits Paddy; the next day he is in a row in a Boston barroom. All this hogwash is telegraphed 3000 miles, while facts of national importance are disposed of in a line or ignored altogether. :new to-day. FURNITURE AUCTION SAL Wednesday, Jan. 28, 11 A. N.
