London, Jan. 21 News of the bat tle in Egypt susprised tho govern ment, as severo fighting was not ex pected, benous donbts aro expressed ( whether General Wolscley's force is sufficiently strong to reach Khar toum. Colonel Bumaby's death is greatly deplored in London. He was a favorite in all tho clubs and in po litical and military circles, where the news has been the chief topic of con versation. The death ot Burnaby is more talked about than the battle itself. The news was not generally known until lato editions of the even ing papers were published. There is great excitement THE PAPERS FIXiLED. London, Jan. 22, a. ar. All tho morning papers contain columns of descriptions and comments regard ing General Stewart's battle. The papers unanimously extol in glowing terms the heroism of tho troops, and unite in eulogizing Colonel iiurnaby, who is described as dying like a true British "bulldog," with his right hand clenched in deatii about the throat or tho Arab whose spear was thrust through the colonel's neck. The papers this morning consider that General Stewart's hurried ad vance to Metemneh indicates further heavy fighting, and they fear the loss of Omdurman will enable Ei Mahdi to provent the passage of Gordon's steamers. But all admit that the bravery of the English augurs well the ultimato success of the expedi tion. EL MAHDI'S ORDERS. Mekawt, Egypt, Jan. 21 The Black "Watch regiment has arrived, and an advance is daily expected. An Arab newspaper publishes El Mahdi's letter to his Lieutenant at Shendy, ordering him to take all his troops to Berber, where with 8,000 warriors, ho shall attack the English forces at .Mount Hamund, north of Berber. The paper publishes another letter from El Mahdi to Osman Digma, urging him to capture Saukem and thereby enable El Mahdi .to procure aid from Arabia by way of that port.
