London, Jan. 2L It is officially re ported that serious fightinp bas oc curred in Egypt and the result is sat isfactory to Lord "Wolseley. No fur ther details have reached London. The battle occurred near Metem neb. An army of 10,000 rebels at tacked a square in "which the British forces were aJvancing, several times, but were compelled eventually to re tire. The rebels lost 800 killed and 800 wounded. The English lost 65. Among the British who fell was Lieutenant Colonel Burnnby, who made the famous "ride to Khiva." A DISPATCH HtOM GEN. WOLSBLBV. London, Jan. 2L A dispatch has been received at tho war office from General Wolseley, dated Korti, Jan. 21, 3 p. m., which reads substantially as follews: General Stewart has had a heavy engagement with a portion of El Mahdi's forces near the Abou Klea wells, about twenty-threo miles this side of Metemneh. Bebeb had col lected from Berber, Metemneh and Omduraman. This last place, I re gret to say, prisoners report, was re cently captured by El Mahdi, and thus men were released from there to fight General Stewart On tho afternoon of January 16, General Stewart's cavalry reported that tho enemy were in position some few miles this side of tho wells. It was too late in tho day to allow an advance and a successful encounter, General Stewart bivouacked whero ho was for the night Tho enemy j-kept up a harmless fire all night, and erected works on General bterrart 8 right flank. Saturday Gen. Stewart attempted to draw tho enemy on to make an at tack, but the rebels hositated. In con sequence General Stewart left all his impediments; also his camels with a guard composed of the Sussex regi ment and some mounted infantry, and moved forward, keeping liis forces in tho form of a square. All the men were on foot Tho British army passed around the enemy s Hank, forcing tliom inmalrnnn atltaek or ha snli-I ject to an enfilading fire. The enemy I wheeled to tho left and mado a well organized charge, under a withering fire from our men. The square was unfortunately penetrated about its Jett rear, .where, ah.'eaTjrjcavalry and camei regiment were in possession, by sheer weight of numbers. The ad mirable steadiness of .our men en abled them to maintain a hand to hand fight with tho opposing forco, while severe punishment was being inflicted upon the enemy by all other sides of the square. Tho enemy was finally driven back under a heavy fire from all sides. The Nineteenth Hus sars then pushed forward to the wells, which were in our possession by 5 in the evening. The enemy left not less than 800 slain around the works. Prisoners taken while tho enemy wero retiring, report that the number of the enemy wounded was quite exceptional. One immediate effect of the battle is that many of tho rebels are submitting. It was necessary for tho army to re main at the wells some hours to ob tain water. As soon as practicable the intention was to push on, with all expedition, to Metemneh. The En glish woundod are doing well. gbneraxi stbwabt's report. General Stewart concludes his re port as follews: "It has been my duty to command a forco from whichexceptional work, exceptional hardship and exceptional fighting havej been called for. It would be impossible to adequately de scribe the admirable support given me by every officer and man of tho foroes. I regret to say that our loss was severe, but our success has been so complete that it may dishearten the enemy to suoh an extent that all their future fighting may be of a less obstinate character." General Wolseley says: "General Stewart's operations havo been most creditable to him as a commander, and the nation has every reason to bo proud of the gallantry and splendid spirit of her majesty's soldiers on this occasion. Our losses wero nine com missioned officers killed and nine wounded, and sixty-five non-commissioned officers and men killed and eighty-five wounded. General Stew art's force consists of about 1,500 men, all told." Besides CoL Uurnaby the follow ing were killed: Michael Carmichael, fifth lancers: Major Athcrton, fifth dragoons; Major Gough, royal dragoens: Captain Uarley and Lieu tenant Law, fourth dragoens: Lieu tenant "Wolf, Scots greys; and Lieu tenants Pigott and Delisle, naval brigade. Lord St Yincent and Lord Airhe were wounded. ANOTHER ACCOUNT OF THB BATTLE. London, Jan. 2L Renter's tele gram company -has a dispatch, dated near Abou Klea wells, Saturday noon, which gives tho following account of ihe engagement. When the hussars scouts returned yesterday, announcing that the rebels held the wells, the British forces formed in a mass column, and ad vanced to the wells. The guards marched at the left of the column. There was a heavy corps in the cen ter, and mounted infantry at tho right. The column halted within three miles of tho wells, but the reb els showed no signs of moving. The British troops set to felling trees and clearing away grass in front of the column. Au abattis was formed around the baggage, aud a stone breastwork with a frontage of lo0 yards, was erected as additional pro tection. In the afternoon the enemy's enmp was sighted, four miles from our ad vance. It comprised numerous tents, and appeared to be fairly well forti fied. Meantime two groups of rebols wero watching us from high hills on the left front At G in the evoning the enemy fired a fonr stray shots, and tho British re plied with soveral shells. The enemy continued firing throughout Friday night, causing only one slight casu alty. THE BEBCTjS FINALLY BErULSEU. Saturday forenoon tho enemy com menced advancing, in two divisions in echelon, each numbering some 5,000 men, beating drums and waving flags. Many of them were armed with rifles. The enemy occasionally halted as if trying to discover the British formation. Meanwhile the British were steadily preparing for the roception of the rebels. They formed a square, artillery beihg plac ed in tho center, and advanced to meet the overwhelming forco of the enemy, who occupied favorable ground, showing great knowledge of tho art of war. They drew us to dif ficult positions for operations, when by a cleverly executed movement, they almost disappeared from view, leaving only their standards visible. Sud denly a large body of rebels appear ed and furiously charged upon the front of the British square The British repliod with a deadly fire, which tho rebels wero uuable to with stand and they turned and attacked the left rear of the square. The heavy troops wero borne down by the onslaught and broken in forma tion for a few moments but quickly rallied. A hand to hand fight ensu- ed." The rebels penetrated the ranks, but were subjected to a heavy flank; fire and finally were driven back. ! General Stewart had a narrow C3- cape, his horse being killed under j him. It is reported that the ronels arc in force at Altnemh. ADDITIONS, PARTICLTjABS. London. Jan. 21. -The battle bo tween General Stewart's troops and Arab3 was fought at a poiut in the Pnasanveli desert, twentv-lhreo miies northwest from AletemneU, and near tho caravan station of btebocas. This side of tho squaro was broken at one time during the fight Officers attribute this disaster to the! unruly conduct of the camels, which got powder burned and were uncon trollable. The line was speedily re formed, and tho discipline of tho men was splendid throughont tho action. A steady and deadly fire was kept up by the Hussars and mounted infant ry, while the artillory maintained an enfilading fire which piled dead Arabs up in heaps. The space in front of the British right flank was a veritable slaughter-pen, and when the Arabs were finally repulsed they loft 800 of their nnmber dead upon the field. The number of their wounded able to retreat or be carried from the field is estimated at 2,000. Mast of tho causalities on the British side occurred during the break in the lino of the hussars. TheBntish took their own and the Arabs wounded to wells and stebocas. Most of tho wounded are reported to be doing well. General Stewart with the remain der of his troops, is progressing to ward Metemneh. During tho night preceding the action tho Arabs threw ur small earthworks, intended to in tercept General Stewart's march, but they were captured and destroyed by a detachment of English troops. A nAND TO HAND CONFLICT. London, Jan. 21. A special giviug additianal particulars of the battle near tho Abou Klea woll says: The battle was .a fearful hand to hand ficrht Most of the ArabB were armed with spears, and protected by spiked shields of oxhide. Tney rtisued to close quarters and swarmed over the bodies of their dead and wounded comrades. The English troops, after tho first few rounds had been fired, fought with shortened sabers and with sword bayonets, wielded at half arm length. Colonel Bnrnaby was killed by the thrust of an Arab's spear, which entered his neck and severed the jugular vein. When Gen eral Stewart's horse was shot tho rider fell to the ground and was bad ly shaken, but he soon recovered and obtained another horse. Tho En glish soldiers had neither food nor water since the night before the bat tle. Sec fourth pitge.) Popular! Popular! Of course. The word comes from every direction.
