ASTORIA, OREGON:
TUESDAY -.JANUARY 20, 1ES5
OPEN THE RIVER.
Wo second the motion raado by the
Asotin Sentinel that mass meetings be
called all over eastern Washington and
suitable resolutions passed praying for
largo appropriations for the opening of
the Columbia rivor. If tbo people were
to make the same noisy demonstration in
this connection that was mado over the
forfeiture proposition a result would prob
ably be accomplished which would be of
incalculable benefit to the eastern coun
ties. JJy all moaus let us petition that
the work be done on the contract plan.
Colfax Gazette.
AVe are glad to see the press wheel
ing into line in favor of opening the
Columbia river to free navigation, and
ive have noticed articles favoring the
project in the columns of papers from
the month of the river to its highest
navigable waters.
The Columbia is the river of the
northwest. There is not a citizen
laboring to make ti livelihood, from
the pan-handle of Idaho to the west
ern coast of Oregon, but would be di
rectly benefited by the removal of im
pediments to navigation in the Co
lumbia. The farming sections of
northern Idaho, eastern "Wasuington
and Oregon have a right to demand
liberal appropriations for the opening
of this great highway of commerce.
It furnishes an outlet a great high
way to the sea to every community
within a radius of 300,000 square
miles. For years its waters have been
controlled by corporations made
wealthy by government land grants,
and the oppressed people in a rich agri
cultural country have groaned under
excessive freights aud fares. Efforts
have been made to construct locks at
the Cascades during the last few
years, but through railroad influ
ences, the appropriations have been
so small that little effective work has
been done. The spirit of the people
is fully aroused to the tyranny of
corporations, and the time has come
for them to assert their rights and
demand of their representatives in
cougress good, earnest work in their
behalf. Landlordism in Ireland has
not been more oppressive to tenants
than railroad control of the choicest
parcels of land of the public domain
in Oregon" and Washington to the
American settler. The Dalles and
Walla Walla are not alone interested
in opening the Columbia river. Ev
ery hamlet, town and city in the
northwest, east of the Cascades, will
be alike benefited in removing obsta
cles to nvaigation in this great river,
which together with its tributaries,
drain the country from the British
boundary to the Oregon line.
We heartily endorse the plan of
the Sentinel and Gazette that mass
meetings should beheld and resolu
tions passed praying for large appro
priations for opening the Columbia
river. It some such action should be
taken, congress would awake to the
realization of the fact those interest
ed in having the Columbia river a com
mercial highway were not a mere few,
but the whole population of the great
northwest, whose rich lands and nat
ural resources are sufficient to sup
port millions.
The above from The Dalles Times
Mountaineer shows that the people
of that section are falling into line.
The Astorian" will continue to urge
this measure and by coopE-ralion on
the part of those who are equally in
terested in the matter we can have a
free river. Our senator and repre
sentative are 'doing what they can; it
is for eastern Oregon to see that
equal effort is made there. "A free
river" from The Dalles to the ocoan
is of more importance to the people
along its banks than what clique or
combination shall succeed at Salem.
The counterfeiting of Columbia
salmon brands in California leads to
another phase of. the swindle. Cali
fornians are now counterfeiting stand
ard brands of California fruits, and
tbo California packers of a good arti
cle naturally object to such piracy.
They demand that the legislature of
that state shall make such imitation
a criminal offense. 'Tis a good idea;
when put in practice let it include
salmon as.woll as fruit
Pjiofessor Wintebs, the French
scientist, committed suicide because
he could not discover to his satisfac
tionwhat mado the wind blow. Othet
men have done the same thing who
failed to solve the problem of how to
raise the wind. '
