MANHOOD ylME John H. Leve, a private in the First Oregon cavalry, enlisted at Salem in February, 1862, will, in a few days, draw a back pension of l,uoU, says the Oregon City Courier. He lately arrived in Oregon City from Polk county. A pension was awarded him for "arrow wound in left hip" received in a brush with the redskins in east ern Oregon in 1SG1, but pay com menced from July 7, 1875, which leaves nine years, from his discharge in 1SG5, which has not been acted upon yet by the pension bureau. He receives for tho future a monthly pension of $8. Capt. Littlefield, of Marahfield, has appropriated about 240 acres of the public domain at Coos Head, at the mouth of fbe bay. for the govern ment; the same is withdrawn from sale by the president of the United States on his recommendation. The selection is made on account of the rock for tho works; but in case of war it wonld also be the proper loca tion for fortifications. Two or three of the smaller con tractors under Nelson Bennett, are reported to have thrown up their contracts, and about three hundred men will be thrown out of employ ment, of whom a number will proba bly go to British Columbia to work on the Canadian Pacific road.
