Prescriptions carefully Compounded BE EARLY DAYS IN ASTORIA. But now, -while the up-river detach-i raent was meeting with brilliant suc cess, and the Indians, rejoicing in their presence, were furthering their every plan, we must descend the river and glance for a moment at'the forest shrouded fur emporium of Astoria. To our surprise we discover that dn ing our absence a stockado of up ended trees has enclosed the houses. We enter and in answer to our sur prised inquiries the war-equipped de signers responded that after the de struction of the Tonquin it became paiufully evident that their own lives hung in the balance. The Indians were forming n conspiracy to obli erate the whole establishment. In this extremity they proceeded to fortify themselves in all haste. But it would never do to have to main tain themselves on a war footing, locked up from the possibility of peaceful traffic. Forthwith the wary McDougal bethought himself of a most potent expedient. Some yearo before this as already noted in the sketch of Lewis and Clarke's journey the small-pox had run a desolating career among the Indians of this coast Some tribes had been almost exter minated. The Indians looked back with shuddering and superstitious horror to the scourge, believing it to have been inflicted upon them by some very bad temanimus combina tion. Accordingly McDougal invited a number of the most influential chiefs to meet him on what he averred to be most important business. Rising among them with marked solemnity, he began: "Warriors, you all know the smallpox." Their frightened faces were sufficient proof of the ex cellence of their memories. "Well, listen to me. I am the smallpox chief." The blauk dismay which whitened even the war-paint and dirt upon tho royal countenances of the chieftains was sufficient encour agement to MoDougal to 1 rocced. So, drawing forth a small bottle, he continued in sepulchral tenes: "Be hold this bottle. I keep the smallpox in it. If the Indians once dare to at tack us all I have to do is to uncork this bottle and let the smallpox out, and every man, woman and child will die." So saying, with solemn gravity, he dismissed his horror stricken guests. ''Sicklied o'er with the pale cast of thought," they sought their respective tribes, warning, them on forfeit of their lives, against incur ring in any way. tho wrath of the dreadful smallpox chief. For many months thereafter McDougal was known by that potent name. But not content with successful defensive warfare, McDougal, amor ous as well as wary, resolved to ren der still more secure the position of the company and at the same timo enlarge his own comfort by an offen sive campaign. In pursuance of this laudable design ho sued tho one-eyed Chinook potentate for tho lily hand of his daughter. The flatness of head and outness of person or tuts "pisca tory princess" rendered her very high priced. But the fur magnate of the northwest would not stand for trifles and proved himself a fit suitor for the royal hand. All the merce nary preliminaries having been pros perously arranged, the nuptials were celebrated with great splendor. The lingering fastidiousness of the bride groom rendered copious ablutions needful for the'removal of the fish-oil wherewith the fairy form of the bride had been laved. With diminished unctuousness, therefore, and increas ed clothes, tho daughter of Concomly became the first lady of Astoria. W. D. Lyman in Oregonian. Northern Pacific Finances. Tho Northern Pacific Bailroad is said to be in most excellent financial condition. All the fixed charges have been fully provided for, and the company sees its way clear to com plote tho Casoade division. Some of the money necessary has come from the sale of first mortgago bonds on the completed portion of the road. Tho Deutehse bank of Berlin has purohased from the company $1,500- 000 of the 4,000,000 of second mort gage bonds, whioh have been in the treasury since their issue. These are the first of this class of bonds which have been put upon the market, the syndicate with whom the bonds were originally placed never having made any attempt to sell them. Tho bonds sold to the Berlin bank are said to have brought in the "neighborhood of ninety. It is seldom that tho second mortgage bonds of any American company have been so well ulaced in Europe recently. Their sale, as has been said, places the company in a ueciueaiy easy condition nnanciatiy lor months to come. Don't Give Up Yet. AROUND THE The ships that Hail from this ikjiI to San Francisco take about one hun dred and twenty-five days to make the outward trip. The price usually charged to carry a passenger js S300. As one can go to San Francisco by rail for half that sum in a week, it would not at first appear thtil people could be found to occupy the fine staterooms that arc fitted up for the use of passengers in all the California clippers. But the existence of three classes of monomaniacs -people who are inordinately fond oi the sea, drunkards and love-sick youths -furnish occupants for the staterooms and help to swell the profits of tho owners of tho ships. A -young man who likes the sea and whoso health has been undermined by oilice work and kindred frivolities, determines to build up his system and enjoy himself at the same time by taking a trip around the Horn. The captain of the clipper likes to see him come aboard. He is not apt to be seasick, and is so wonderfully and fearfully nautical that he furnishes a considerable amount of innocent amusement for the first month at least. Then he always insists upon hauling at the braces or the halyards when those ropes are to bo operated upon, and so, though he is somewhat in ihe way at first and manfully restrains his desire for pulling and hanliug just as he gets to bo handy, n good deal of work can be got out of him in a quiet way. The drunkard is an other sort of a passenger. He goes to sea not by choice, but on the rec ommendation of his relatives and friends, who generally offer him tho alternative of an inebriate asvlum. Ho usually smuggles enough liquor aboard to keep him in his favorite ar ticle of dnnk and good humor for tho first menth: but after that he is apt to get sick or ill-natured. Some. times ho gets cured of his bad habit. and is an agreeablo companion for tho entire trip. The love-sick youth mourns aud sighs about the ship, get3 frightfullv seasick, and writes long letters and maudlin poetry between spells. He has to be petted nnd waned on, and is reallv a nuisance. If he recovers from his love nnd seasickness, ho is apt to become a good fellow and an acquisition to tho society of the ship. If the trip around tho Horn accom plishes for these three classes of peo ple just what it is intended to ac complish (and if it does not, nothing will), tho pale clerk comes back a hale and hearty fellow, with an ap petite that strikes terror to the heart of his landlady, and a grip that makes his friends wince as he shakes hands with them; the drunkard comes back with passion for liquor in subjection, and the love-sick youth returns glad- Iv to niany the heiress and wilhnglv forget the French chambermaid. N. I. Tribune. PAYSON FEEIS ENCOURAGED. New Yobk, January 8. The Times "Washington special of January- 7th says: Representative Lewis E. Pay son of Illinois, who has repeatedly been conspicuous in the house iu his advocacy of bills to forfeit lands granted to railway companies aud unearned by failure to comply with the obligations of the grants, said to day that tho vote in the senate yes terday on the bill to forfeit the lauds granted to the Oregon Central Bail- way was encouraging, no nau Heard that the assertion had been made that the vote was not significant, as there was no objection to the passage of the bill and that the senate would affix Seuator Morgan's amendment to all tho other land grant bills. For his part he was unablo to see what good reason for refusing to amend this bill would not hold good in the case of all the land grant bills. The Oregon Central forfeiture was not singular or peculiar. It would, no doubt, be very gratifying to tho peo ple who had come to regard the sen ate as lost to all sympathy except that with railroad corporations, to discover that it was possiblo to get a bill through that body which propos ed to allow tho United States to re take lands which have neither been earned or purchased and which are needed for purchasers in good faith.
