Prescriptions carefully Compounded SOME RAILROAD LAND GRANTS. Little Chance for Their Forfeiture Congress. by Washington, January 3. The rail road lobby appears to have triumphed in its work of defeating legislation looking to tho opening up of the for feited land grants for public settle ment. There are over 100,000,000 acres of land now illegally held by various railroad corporations throughout the country. The terms upon which these lands were origi nally granted have never been com plied with. They should bo to-day open to entry for settlement Some of these lands are very valuable. The supreme court some time ago decid ed that even where a grant is forfeit ed through failure upon tho part of the railroads to comply with their contract, affirmative action was need ed by congress to complete the for feiture and restoro tho land to the public domain. The house has done all that it could. It has passed sev eral bills throwing open great tracts of illegally held land to entry. It sent over to tho senate to test that body one of its strongest cases. This was the forfeiture of the 15,000,000 acre tract claimed by the Southern Pacific railroad under a fraudulent assignment from tho Texas Pacific. This bill passed the house almost without opposition, but the moment it reached tho senate its progress was checked in that corporation-ridden body. Senator Morgan has offered an amendment to the bill referring the question of forfeiture to the courts. The senate will insist upon its amendment The house will nev er concede it, and so tho railroad lobby is triumphant because of tho senate insisting upon an improper amendment This will result in no legislation. Judge Payson intends next Mon day to give tho house an opportunity to complete its record by offering a resolution dcolaring all the unearned land grants of the country forfeited in bulk. He will offer it under sus pension of the rales, It is not cer tain that this resolution can secure a two-thirds vote, because some of tho members may not think that the forfeitures should stand together upon the samo basis. The sentiment in the bonse, however, is over whelmingly in favor of opening up these lands to entry. If tho resolu tion should pass and bo sent over to tho senate, that body would undoubt edly insist upon putting the Morgan amendmont of the Southorn Pacifio upon it Of course that is just what the railroad people want It they could get the question referred to tho courts, thoy would havo those lauds tied up in endless litigation, and having possession of them would probably hold them. Congress orig inally gave these titles away upon certain conditions. In all tho cases pending none of tho conditions havo been complied with. Tho value of these lands is nearly equivalent to tho amount of the public debt 9 Chkcse Defeated With Great Loss. Pabis, Jan. 6. A dispatcli from Hanoi says that after the defeat of 0,000 Chinese near Chu, by General Negrier 12,000 Chinese returned and ronewed hostilities. General Negrier attacked them, penetrated their po sitions defended by a fort and tiers of batteries, and repulsed and routed the Chinese, who after active resist sndo, abandoned their positions. The Chinese lost 6,000 killed and a largo .number of wounded. The French captured two batteries of Krupp guns, a large number of rifles, a quantity of ammunition and pro visions, and some Chineso standards. The French losses in both battles were threo ofiloers wounded and nineteen men killed and sixty-five wounded. A correspondent of the London Telegraph with tho Nile expedition has learned from n refugee how the Mahdi raises funds. From time to time ho appears before his people and says ho has been commanded to part with all his goods, everything ho pos sesses in short, must go to tho public treasury, or to the "Bait el Mai" (charity box). Proffers aro mado on all sides to save him from stripping his household; but all these ho reso lutely deolines, saying, "The com mand is for me1 not you." By and by their turn comes, when tne Manai says ne iias naa a communication from "El Hadra" that such a one is to give all be has to th o "Bait el MaL" Thoy have seen tho Prophet himself compl ying with theie directions of tho "Presence," and how dare anyono else disobey? Accordingly, mazing a virtue of ne cessity, goods and slaves all find their way to the "charity-box," otherwise the Prophet's chest All disputes about goods or betrothals tho Mahdi quickly settles by appropriating the goods to the publio treasury, and tho women to his harem. He courts the poor and gives them free license to plunder, and snubs the sheiks. HceU'RmsIsIeB ef Pare Cod. Liver OH, witk IXrpepkoKpKlteB. Fer Aneamia and Marasmus in Children. Dn. W. D. By the census of 1860 the popula tion of the United States was 31,445,- 0S0. The present population is now estimated at 55,000,000. Tho gain in twenty-nvo years has been, tiiereiore, twenty-three and a half millions, or at the rate of 75 per cent In 1860. according to estimates tlie accuracy of which was then univers ally acknowledged, there were 8,600,- 000 Methodists in this country. They were then, as now, the strongest re ligious body numerically Since 1860 the total has grown to 15,000,000, which is an increase of 75 per cent, keeping pace exactly with the increase in population. The number of the amliants of the various Baptist churches was, in 1860, 8,000,000. To-day it is 12,000,000. The increase in twenty-five years is there fore oO percent, a gain in absolute ratio but a f allingoff when considered relatively. The Presbyterians numbered in 1860 3,600,000. Now they number 5, 500,000, an increase in twenty-five years of 53 per cent The .Lutherans, who have been ma terially benefited by constant and in creased immigration from Germany, Sweden, Holland and Norway, have grown from L250.000 mlSOO to 2,000,- 000 in 1881, or at tho rate ot 60 per cent The Conffreeationalists have de clined relatively very much. The old spirit of the New England Pilgrims seems to be dying out among them. In twenty-five years they havo ad vanced but 27 per cent that is, from 1,413,000 in 1860 to 1,800,000 at pres ent On tho other hand, the various Beformed churches Dutch, German, and .Evangelical show an increase of nearly 50 per cent, from 810,000 in 1860 to 1,200,000 to-day. Tho .hpiseopalians show a fair in crease in numbers, yet one relatively below tho average. Their percentage of gain is 23K per cent in bventy-five years, bringing up the totalfrom 900,- 000 to 1,200,000. Tho Hebrews, counting together those who aro orthodox and those who are merely nominal havo in creased from 350,000 in 1860 to 700, 000 in 1834, a full 100 per cent of gain. The Friends, or Quakers, show an absolute as well as relativo decline. They have fallen off 60 per cent from 220,000 in 1860 to 150,000 in 1884. Tho denomination of Christians, who are numerous in Kentucky, southern Indiana, southern Illinois, and Missouri, number 800,000, against 500,000 in 1860, an absoluto gain of GO per cent, yet a falling off relatively of 15. But the most surprising feature of tho calculations just accomplished is Ltho growth of tho Catholics. In 1860 they nnmborcd in tho United States 3,175,000. Now thero aro 9,500,000. This is a gain of 300 per cent in twenty-fivo years. Should tho same ratio of increase continue to bo pro served, they would number fifteen years hence 25,000,000. It is to bo noted that the churches ot all creeds and denominations in tho United States contain accommoda tions for 27,500,000 persons, or just half that of the whole population of 55,000,000. Desolation in Jars. In some parts of the country tho earthquakes havo left not a tree stand ing; and the soil is a wilderness, look ing like tho bottom of a dried-up sea. In fact tho region is in as bad a way as tho worn-out Btomach of an old dyspeptic. Earthquakes cannot be prevented, but dyspepsia can, and tho timely use of Brown's Iron Bitters will do it This best of family medi cines can be bought ot any druggist at a dollar a bottle. Don't let your stomach bocome a desolation for the lack of it Industrial depression prevails in most countries of Europe. Com plaints are heard in Belgium, Den mark, England, France and Holland. In the latter country a motion has been made in the lower chamber to take measures for tho relief of unem ployed workmen, who are suffering from absolute want Tho distress is most prevalent at Amsterdam, Rot terdam and The iiague. In Den mark depression and consequent reduction of wages havo produced a general strike of 7,000 men connected with tho shipping trades of Copen hagen. Iu Belgium the working class members of tho municipalities, elected on the 19th of October last, havo united with tho various Demo cratic societies and workmen's leagues to constituto a general federation, to improve the condition of the produc ing classes, who are the principal vic tims of the present depression. Thus depression and agitation aro going hand in hand over the great industrial centers of Europe. - i 9 m i - Wide A-walic Druggists. Messrs. "W.E.
