Addrett I.IR UIG IUSPEXSA R YJr Ultnites Men. 400 Gears ?.. "' I'rauckc, Cat. frfANHOODjH' RESTORED A CONTINENTAL WATER-WAY. Two of the great rivers of the world riso near the heart of tho African continent. Thelsilo has its sources in a number of lakes, and in aOlnents south of the equator. Its two gre.t branches unite at Kharlonm. A French syndicate proposes to improve the navigation of this great water way, making it navigable for steamers fro'm .Alexandria to Ivhartoum, and beyond. The trip from Alexandria to Ivhartoum would then as lo dis tance, compare very well witb that from New Orleans to St. Paul. The enterprise would not involvo greater diffionlties than were encountered in the construction of the Suez canal, and probably wonld not involve so great an outlay. Nothing is too hard for the modern engineer if ever he litis the financial backing. He sees in this instance one of the great rivers of the world extending into the heart of a continent practically useless for navigation for nearly two-thirds of its distance. Uapidt?, rocks, reefs, sand-bars, a great volume of water coming down from the mountains of the equatorial regions, great lakes which act as reservoirs. All tho re sources are there. But the chief importance of the river for more than two thousand years has been ou account of the wa ter furnished for irrigating pnrposes in lower Egypt. By means of locks, dams aud other well-known hydraulic improvements the modern cngineor would convert the river into a navi gable water-way the year round. Of course the syndicate would want tolls by way of income on the capital in vested. The khedive will bo asked lo assent to the proposition of the syndicate. It has long been main tained in theory that the Nile could be made navigable to the equator. The difficulty to bo encountered is not a lack or water, but rather the control of water. The cheapest means of transportation even now are those offered by great rivers. The Mississippi can lloat cargoes for twenty-five hundred miles cheaper than they can bo transported by railroad. Now that so much attention has been turned to the culling of great canals like the Panama, the Nicaragua nnd tho one across the isthmus of Corinth, ti is natural that the great rivers of the world, closed to navigation by great physical obstacles, should also receive the attention of engineers. Tho Danube had a month mado for it by engineering skill. The Missis sipi had also a new and bettor month made. Both of these improvements aro hardly of less importanco than the job which tho French syndicate proposes to do on tho Nile. The pyr amids of Lower Egypt wcro the won der of ancient engineering. Bnt they aro iu no way helpful to human ity. Modern engineering is not much given to pyramid building. Thero are no dividends on capital to be drawn from such sources. But it proposes to do a far greater thing to take a great river, whose sources had been in doubt for more than two thousand years, and I o convert it into an unobstructed highway of commerce for moro than two thous and miles. PILES! PILES! PILES! a suin: cuke food at last: HO ONE NEED SUFFER. A sure cure for Blind, Bleeding' Itching and Ulcerated Piles has been discovered by Dr. "Williams (an Indi an Remedy,) called Dr. "William's In dian Pile Ointment A singlo box has cured the worst chronic cases of 25 or 30 years standing. No one need sntTer live minutes after applying this wonderful soothing medicine Lotions instruments and electuaries do more harm than good. William's Indian PilH Ointment absorbs the tumors, allays the intense itching, (particular ly at night after getting w'arm in bed,) acts-ns a poultice, gives instant relief, and is prepared only for Piles, itching of the private parts, and for nothing else. Read what tho Hon. J. M. Coflinbor ry of Cleveland says about Dr. Wil liam's Indian Pilo Ointment: I have used scores of Pilo Cures, aud it af fords me pleasure to say that I have never found anything which gave such immediate and permanent relief as Dr. "William's Indian Ointment. Hon. Judge W. P. Coons, Maysville, Ky., says: "I have suffered for years with itching piles, and have used many remedies. I havo used Dr. Wil liam's Lidian Pile Oinlmentand been cured whilo every other remedy has failed." For sale by all druggists and mailed on receipt of price, SLOO.
