TERRIBLE RECORD OK EARTHQUAKES.
aLvdkid, Jan. 1. -A singular feature
of the earthquake was the fact that
in places only a short distance apart
some experienced three and others
soventeen shocks. After the first
shock there were flashes of lightning
from a clear sky. All the shocks ran
from the south to the north. Several
of the shocks had a rotary movement.
It is probable Alfonso will visit
Andalusia. Officers of the govern
ment are visiting the scenes of the
recent terrible earthquake to afford
relief.
Terrible gales passed over half the
ruined villeges, exposing bodies in
terred. Albuera presented an appall
ing sight Halt the town was com
pletely ruined. The churches, the
convent and the town hall were com
pletely ruined. The inhabitants arc
still outside the town, shivering
around fires. Women and children
are huddled in carts, wagons and
temporary ambulances. Sixty per
sons were wounded. Armed guards
aro protecting tho town. One hun
dred and ninety-two corpses were ex
tricated from tho ruins. The mayor
and other wealthy citizens are among
tho victims. The mayor's wife
was buried in debris for
eighteen hours. Many were
rescued alive, after being part
ly buried for twenty-six hours, half
crazed with fright Piteous cries
were heard from the ruins for twenty
four hours. Many of these people
ultimately died, assistance being im
possible. Troops aro now bringing
provisions. The scenes hero were
similar to those in Albania. The in
habitants wander about their desolat
ed homes, riskinc their lives in an
endeavor to save something from tho
wreclc A camp was improvised from
carts, tents sheds, these, with tne
snow-clad hills round about, made a
weird spectacle.
ADDITIONAL SHOCKS.
Madbid, Jan. 1. Shocks of earth
quake continue to bo felt at Jaeu,
Malaga, Benarmargosa, and Velez, in
Malaga. Several severe shocks were
felt at Torrox "Wednesday aud Thurs
day, destroying more buildings. The
town is completely abandoned. The
ehurch at Terjo is damaged, and
services are now held in the open air.
Three hundred and fifty corpses
have been discovered at Oremas del
lleg. Two hundred and fifty persons
aro now suffering from injuries.
At a meeting of the premier, minis
ters of finance and tho interior, sena
tors and deputies for Granada andMal-
ana had to-day it was decided to adopt
measures for tho immediate relief of
the sufferers and provide shelter and
provisions for the homeless. A na.
tional fund has also been opened, to
which government employes have
been invited to subscribe a dny's pay.
Land tax has been remitted in the
suffering districts. A committee of
tho principal inhabitants has been
formed in each town to distribute
the fund. It is reported that the
government loan of 3,000,000 pesetas
will be used for the relief of the in
habitants of the afflicted districts.
PANIC INCREASING.
Madbid, Jan.L The panic caused
by the earthquakes is mcreasting at
Archidona, Granada, Torecox, and
Yeilez. At Malaga the inhabitants
are all encamped in a field. Tho mu
seum, university, hospital, prison and
government oiitces at liranada aro
more or less severely injured.
Russia Makes a Proposal.
London, Jan. L The Kussian gov
ernment has proposed a plan for the
settlement of the Jttgyntion question.
which will probably be acceptable to
France, namely that a new loan be
guarrautced by all the powers, at a
small reduction of interest, any sur
plus obtained to be divided among
the creditors and that tho British
withdraw from Egypt on a fixed
date.
The Khedive Ignores England.
Vienna. Jan. L The Tageblatt
says the khedive of Egypt, encour
aged by tho advice of the German
and Bnssian governments, has re
fused to comply with England's de
mand to convene the chamber of
notables for tho purpose of voting
a reduction of tho land tax and pro
norncing in favor of tho English
financial proposal.
Victoria Will Protest.
Met.boubnb, Jan. L Tho govern
ment of Victoria has instructed its
London agent to protest against the
annexation of .New uninea by uer
many. It says the territory is not
reclaimed, and if annexation of the
Now Hebrides by Franco bo permited
the estrangement from the mother
country of the colonies will be in
creased. Tbe Oat-Croppls?.
"When you seo indications of coal
lying along tho surface of tho earth,
you may know there is more coal un
derneath. Just so when you see an
awful case of salt rheum, you may
know that the blood is in a frightful
condition. Mr. Francis Standish, of
Duxbury, Mas3., writes that Brown's
IronBitters has proved along-wished-
for mend, because it cured his salt
rheum, which had tormented him for
long and weary years. Three bottles
made him feel like a new man. This

LATEST FROM EGYPT.
Cairo, Jan. 1. Gen. Wolseloy has
received ft small piece of paper with
General Gordon's genuine seal on the
back, dated December 14, saying
Khartoum was all right A dispatch
has been received from the mudir
stating that an Arab from El Mahdi'c
camp has reached Dongola. He af
firms that El Mahdi s followers have
gathered in force at a oint twelve
hours march south of Omderman.
They repeatedly attacked Omderman,
but have been repulsed with heavy
loss and compelled to retreat to
Mizanelneko. "Gordon, upon learn
ing the Bedouin Arabs came to wells
during night sent armed boats to
guard the wells, causing great suffer
ing among the rebels, many of whom
died of smallpox and dysentery. El
Mahdi therefore withdrew his army
to Jabbara, two days from Omder
man. Several tribes subsequently de
serted. El Mahdi told his principal
chiefs that he intended to march
against the Mudir of Dongola. The
chiefs professed a readiness to fol
low, if El Mahdi would charm off the
bullets of the enemy by leading iu
steadof followinc his troops. Next
day El Mahdi told his chiefs he had
seen in a dream that the Mudir was a
saint, against whom it was useless to
fight This statement caused great
alarm.
HOW TIIE MESSAGE WAS SENT.
Korti, Jan. L General Gordon's
note, not au inch square of paper,
was rolled tip about the sizo of a
pin-head and was sewn in tho seam
of one of tho messengers' garments.
General Gordon estimated El Mahdi's
force at from 20,000 to 80,000 men.
The messenger adds that in a recent
engagement 0110 of tho enemy's guns
was disabled, and tho garrison was
able to hold out General Gordon
spends his nights in ceaseless watch,
visiting the ontposts to seo that ev
ery sentry is on the alert Ho has
two palaces, with a gun monuted on
each. He has always examined the
guns at daybreak, in order that he
may assuro himself that they are
properly primed aud ready for action.
He then lies down and sleeps during
tho greater part of the day. General
Gordon is described as a cheerful
mau, well supplied with tobacco.
Five boats of the Black "Watch con
tingent have arrived at Korti, having
accomplished the journey 111 shorter
time thau any body of troops that
preceded them. The Hussars were
sent ahead yesterday.
Living in "Washiidon.
Kates for living were never higher
111 AVashmgton than they are now,
says the New York World. The hotels
have put their prices up ever since
the season opened. Ollice-scekers
coming hero this season should pur
chase return tickets and briug plenty
of money with them. A senator who
has to live upon his salary went to
one of tho up-town hotels recently
and asked for rates for himself, wife
and daughter. He wanted a sitting
room and two bedrooms. The ami
able hotel proprietor said he could ac
commodate him with the rooms and
board desired, upon the fifth story,
for S210 a week. "But that is more
than any salary." ! can't help that,
replied the landlord. "We have no
trouble in getting those figures." The
same senator tried for rooms in a
fashionable flat, and found that on the
top floor ho could get four small
rooms for $230 a month. This did
not include board. Room rents have
also cone up, 875 and 100 are com
mon monthly prices chargod for two
ordinarily furnished rooms in up
town localities.
New York. Dec. 30. W. Chris-
topherson, minister plenipoteutarns
for Sweden and Norway to Mexico,
arrived yesterday on the steamer
Alaska. "I have been empowered,"
he said to a reporter, to negotiate a
treaty of commerce and navigation
between my government and Mexico,
Of course I cannot now stato the ex
act nature of my instructions, but I
can say thatmycouutry is disposed to
make a treaty."
Minnesota is the newest field for
gold and silver prospectors. A vig
orous hunt for these precious metals
in the North Shore region tributary
to Duluth it is said is in progress.
Tho list of gold seekers is now large
and includes some wealthy men and
miners of long experience. Tho rec
ords of the land office at Duluth
show that in the last four months
over 20.000 acres of government land
have been taken up at $1.25 per acre
by cold and silver speculators. The
number of mining companies incor
porated is already large.
