O") lt gaily gtomu. AST011IA, OKEUOX: fiuv. -January 2 w 7 WENTY-FOUR O'CLOCK. tX ktvt method of mcnsnrin;; t!mo fas adopted at (be Greenwich cb- l.ervalon j eslenla. Tbo day of ttveaty-four hours will be reckoned from mi'lmghr. Tbo hours will no 1 aser be divided, as now, into luehe, bat will be counted on to twenty four. A number of clocks and watch es liave already appeared with faces adapted to the new method of count ing. But more tban this would be required. Tbe hour hands of watches must be made to traverse the twenty four sections instead of twelve. By this measurement 1 o'clock r. m. wutild become 13 o'clock, and so on. The change about to ba made at Greenwich is an official one, tbat be ins government observatory. The proposed change is already encoun tering some opposition. The change, however, will bo greatly expedited by tbe watch and clockmakers, who will introduce the new dial faces exten sively, if for no better reason than that it would make business in their line bribk. The ttventy-four hours on the dial, says the JhiUetin, will probably not becomo popular. Old fashioned people will find it hard to conform to the new usage. There will bo but little use for "r. m." and "a. m." when the new dials are adopt- ,-1. Tho London I'imcs devotos n range about to be Pich. Even the large d.als of the observatory clock at Greenwich looks uncomfortably crewded: and in a watch divided in the same m:.uivr the circle would be I tactically unbroken. Young bloods might find it inconvenient to be out late when the small hours are no longer noted, and H o'clock is substi tuted for 2 o'clock. It is not likely that n system which works well euough in all matters of business, will be mado to give way to a system which, while better for scientific pur poses, would work confusion and be attended with great additional ex pense in altering lime pieces. The world will still get along with a day divided"into two sections of twelve hours eacht A doctor was lately brought be fore the German tribunals for having neglected to keep himself informed as to modern methods of practice. A servant who received a wound in the chest in April last died from septicae mia under the caro of this doctor, who despising antiseptic dressings, treated his patient according to an- cient usages. The court held that f every medioal practitioner should ;eep himself informed on the accom- lJished progress of science, and have an exact knowledge of modern sys tems of treatment. If these had been employed tho patient's life might haveheen saved, henco the liability ?ligence." The court or appeal Kd the judgment. The papers at the cast, says the S. F. Chronicle, aro much concerned about the fortunes of General Grant All his property, high and low, has been seized under the judgment ob tained against him by Mr. Vander bilt and is to be sold by tho sheriff. It is intimated that Tanderbilt's is a j friendly suit instituted to protect the general's property from other j creditors of Grant & "Ward. But such a course of action is not in tho least in Vauderbilt's line. He is the very man to exact his pound of flesh from the soldier who saved the conn try. It is miserably petty business quibbling about Grant's having this or that little driblet of income left A man who has rendered the country such services as ho rendered should be munificently rewarded as En gland rewarded Wellington, as France rewarded Napoleon. It is humili ating to think of this great man be ing reduced to write magazine articles for a living in his old age. He has testified a willingness to bo restored to the rank in tho army which he surrendered in order to lake tho presidency at a time when perhaps lie was tiie only man in whom the people had confidence. Is there any reason why congress should hesitate to restore him? Wo know of none. Canadian merchants and manufac turers who have large mails save a third in their postage expenses, it is said, by sending their mail matter in bundles by express to the nearest postoffice on tho United States side of the boundary line, where they mail it at tho two-cent rate, whereaB they would have to pay three cents if the matter were mailed on the other side. At the high court of judiciary in Edinburg the other day a man was condemned to two month's imprison ment for having knocked his wife down and kicked her unto death. The next prisoner was convicted of having stolen a letter containing two half-soverigns and sixty stamps. His sentence was five years' penal servitude.
