GENERAL GRAXTS PROSPECTS.
A Gloomy Outlook for the Hero of Ap
pomattox. "Washington, Dec. 29. Nothing has
been heard in this city to-day touch
ing General Grant's financial affairs.
General Sherman has not yet arrived
and it is now said he will not be here
until after the 1st of January. ;Gen
eral Beale said to-night. "I am of the
opinion that Yanderbilt will not care
to take advantage of the law to such
an extent as to force the sale of Gen
eral Grant's personal effects. Aside
from this, however, it has occured to
me that Vanderbilt may be acting for
General Grant's benefit Having pre
ferred a claim to General Grant's
property, he may execute the law and
obtain possession and return it sub
sequently, simply to prevent some
claimants who come after fiom secur
ing General Grant's effects. So we
had better wait and see if things are
in as bad a shapo as reported. No
doubt the effort for relief will prove
successful. General Grant is nation
al property and the nation takes pride
in the honors he has received. If
congress is unwilling to place him on
the retired list of the army, let it
make an appropriation to purchase
the mementoes he has and place them
on exhibition at the Smithsonian in
stitution." The Star says: The prospects of
the bill for the retirement of General
Grant are not very good. The bill
passed the senate on the 13th of May
last and was placed on the speaker's
table in the houEe, where it now re
mains, buried under 127 other bills,
without a possible chance of resnr
rection. It has not even been refer
red to the house military committee,
the chairman of which, General Eose
crans, is supposed to favor it. The
only way it could be reached would
be by taking it up by unanimous con
sent, and this is rendered out of the
Snestion from the fact that there is a
ecided opposion to it
Senator Sherman told a Xepubli
mn reporter to-night that he had re
ceived a letter from his brother, Gen
eral Sherman, in which the latter said
he would be in Washington on Satur
day next and incidentally conveyed
the information that General Grant
was in financial distress. The senator
said he thought Yanderbilt had taken
the course he had in the matter
toward General Grant to save his
property; wh'ch would, he thought,
be bought in by some friend or friends
and held for General Grant's benefit
He said he did not think Yanderbilt
would have the heart to sacrifice Gen
eral Grant's property, or that he
would dare to do it in the fac3 "of
public opinion. Senator Sherman
expressed his svrapatby with General
Grant
The Egyptian Problem.
Berlin, December 29. The 2Tort7i
German Gazette, replying to a recent
article in the London Daily ITeics,
on the decision of -the powers to ig
nore the proposals of England rela
tive to Egyptian finances, and attrib
uting this decision to the attitude of
Bismarck, says: European peace is
more important than the settlement
of the Egyptian question. Each
power is obliged to consider whether
the acceptance of the English
proposals would jeopardize its rela
tions with other powers. If England
aud France come to an agreement
on the subject the agreement of the
other powers can be easily obtained,
they having less interests in Egypt
to concern them in the event of the
failure of the English proposals. It
is to England's interests to induce
Germany to accept them. Germany is
too much interested in retaining the
good will of France to snatch the
Anglo-Egyptian chestnuts from the
French fire, and attaches too great
value to England's good will to wan
tonly disoblige her through ill feel
ing, but she will not interfere with
the policy of peace with France ob
served since the war. The difficulty
lies in the reluctance of each power
to decide before the others accept or
reject tho proposals.
Something Quite Unexpected.
A very extraordinary case is that of
Mr. T. O. Hall, one of the best known
newspaper men in Louisville, Ky. For
sixteen years he had been annoyed
with tetter, and had given up all hope
of its removal. He was also troubled
with indigestion, for which he tried
Brown's Iron Bitters. He writes, 4The
bitters did splendidly for indigestion,
and the tetter commenced itching and
developing to the surface and for four
days was more annoying than ever
before, atul 1 never thought the bit
ters was causing the trouble until
Mrs. H. suggested it, and then I re
alized that my great torment had a
master. I bathed the tetter external
ly, softening the surface thoroughly,
when a waterish substance poured
out iiue juiy perspiration on a corn
field darkey, then in a very short
time the itching sensation stopped.
The sore caused by the expulsion of
the tetter is not yet healed but I
know that the cause of the unmitigat
ed trouble is forever removed."
