The vessel left SL Pierre December 15. The gales of the 17th, 18th and 19th drove the ship near Sable island. The west-end hght-house on the island -was sighted at four o'clock on the afternoon of Friday, the 19th insL V"A heavy snowstorm prevailed and the wind was blowing a hurri cane. A few minutes after land was made out the vessel was driven on a sand bar with great violence and immediately began to break up. bhe had a crew of seven men. The ther mometer indicated 12 degrees below zero and tho sufferings of themen were terrible. They were frost-bitten, cnt, bruised and thoroughly dis heartened, and death was a welcome release. Three of the crew were washed overboard when the ship struck, and although there was plenty of floating debris, they made no effort to save themselves and were drowned. The steward, preferring death to any fur ther misery, ran to his berth, grabbed a razor and cut a terrible gash in his throat, reaching from ear to ear, jumped into the surf and disap peared. His body was found in tho sand the next day by the coast guards men. Captain Lemarchand and his first mate and a sailor managed to get on the sand bank by the aid of a floating spar, but only escape'd the terrors of the deep to encounter the more frightful terrors of tho frost king. They could faintly discern the glimmer of a lighthouse three miles across the sand bar, and set out in the darkness to reach it The sand was being driven with blinding force by the gale and dashed against the faces of the exhausted men like hailstones. Finally the captain succumbed, lay down, and despite the efforts of his equally exhausted comrades to arouse him, was in a few minutes frozen to death. The chief officer and the sailor then pressed on, but within half an hour the sailor too lay on tho sands a frozen corpse. Tho chief officer, a powerfully built man, the only survivor, pushed on alone to the lighthouse Alter six hours' of almost indescribable suffering from frost and dashing sands, he reacheijty lighthouse the lastflnprgguj on his hands and knes arra told the terrible tale oU.t?reck.
