Aa Impending Conflict Betweea Orange- men and Catholics. Habbob Gbacb (N. F., Dec. 25.A reign of terror prevails in this place. To-morrow is the anniversary of the massacre of Orange'men on St Ste phen's day, a year ago. The Orange men will walk 900 strong, in defiance of the Newfoundland monnted police and the .British man-of-war sailors. Every adult Catholic and Protestant in the district is fully armed and a repetition of last year's massacre ap pears inevitable. There are 1500 peo ple in the district, a large majority of whom are Protestants. The Catholics live in settlements by themselves. The Koman Catholic Cathedral re cently finished at a cost of 25,000 is one of the most beautiful on this side of the Atlantic. It is now feared that this will be wrecked. The greatest harmony and good will existed be tween the Catholics and. Protestants hero up to eighteen months ago About this time Bishop McDonald invited the Catholic missionaries to hold revival services here. In arous ing the zeal of their own people they also aroused, the ire of the Protes tants, whose religion they denounced. Both Catholics and Protestants are very ignorant, and, of course, intense ly bigoted. The Protestants began petty annoyances to individual Cath olics. One Catholic was set upon and beaten while returning from a revival meeting. The Orangemen being away to tho Labrador fisheries last year on St. Stephen's day, they had only 300 members in Harbor Grace district "While marching in procession they were met at the extreme end of the the towu by a body of 200 Cath olics from Bivershead, a place three miles distant The visitors were armed with clubs and sealing-guns. These men, who are engaged, in seal- fishing, all own guns twice the length of ordinary rifles and carrying a mur derous charge of shot, pieces of iron, lead, eta The Catholics insisted that the Orangemen should turn back. The latter refused and a shot rang out from the Catholic party and a boy named Jeans fell dead on his face, covered with sixty wounds from a gun charged with scraps or iron. The Orangemen, being unarmed, turned tail and ran. In the melee and confusion three other Orangemen were killed and fifteen badly wounded. One Catholie-was also killed. All, ex cept Jean9 and another, were shot in the back while running away. The Catholic is said to have been shot by his own son. who, in shooting at the Orange rabble, killed his father, who was standing just in front of him. In Harbor lirace both sides are armed to the teeth. Every able- bodied man in this district is armed with, a revolver, repeating rifle or sealing gun. Explosive bullets were openly imported and both sides are preparing for St Stephen's day to morrow. Meanwhile business has been demoralized, the only efficient law here being the power of the strongest In this dilemma the gov ernment besought the imperial an thorities to send a man-of-war, which is now here and will assist the gov ernment mounted p'lice to-morrow in attempting to prevent what "now appears to be an inevitable and bloody riot The Controlling Power of the Iron Chan cellor. London, Dec. 25. The Post's Ber lin dispatch says: It is impossible for BiBmarck to leave Berlin or Varain at present He personally controls all business and will not trust any of the ministers to act on their own re sponsibilty. A direct wire connects Bismarck's office with the foreign office at Vienna. It is no exaggera tion to say that he controls Austro Hungarian politics. The Germans resident at St Peters burg met and forwarded here a pro test against the action of the reichstag refusing an assistant to .Bismarck. The Germans residing in Warsaw sent a patriotic address to Bismarck. London, Dee. 25. The London News, in an article on the decision of the powers to ignore the English- isgyptian proposals, says: xne action was prompted by Bismarck, who, irri tated by the policy of Gladstone, de sires to overthrow the British cabinet Bismarck, it is said, wanted England to annex Egypt, and so enable Ger many to pursue unhampered, her present policy of colonization. France and Austria, continues the article, would willingly support Bismarck, as they, "consider the success of England in Egypt will put oh'eck to their schemes of annexation elsewhere. The War U the Orient. Londok, December 25, A dispatch from Shanghai says; Eighty-five thousand Chinese troops under Li Hung Chang are massed at Pei-Ho. THE NICARAGUA TREATY. Opposition of tho English Press to the Proposed Compact. New Yobk, December 25. The Herald? s London cable special says: The Times has a leader on the Nica raguan treaty a column and a half long, in the course of which it says: "Cleveland's character, indeed his conduct during the late contest, leads us to hope that he will adopt a digni fied and friendly course. "We readily admit that the Nicaragua canal scheme mu3t bo judged in tho United States primarily on its merits, with out reference to English susceptibil ities, or even English interests. At the same timo we occupy a position of almost impregnable strength in protesting against the policy which would constitute a deliberate viola tion of treaty rights. The Clayton Bulwer treaty was expressly designed to cover such a case as that contem plated in the arrangement with Nicaragua. When it is proposed to abrogate that treaty by the will of one of the parties it is incumbent on the dissentient nation to justify that extreme measure by convincing argu ment Meantime, tho obligations, legal and moral, of the Clayton-Bul- wer treaty, remain unimpaired. ' Labouchero poohpoohs the idea, in Truth, that tho Clayton-Bulwer treaty was to cover any other than the canal contemplated in President Fillmore's time. The Shipping Ga- ztete has a strong article upholding the Clayton-Bulwer treaty. "It seems ludicrous," said an ex-United States senator yesterday in the hearing of your correspondent, "that England, with all her oriental complications, should be inventing a rumpus about a western enterprise' RANDALL'S SOUTHERN TRIP. A Journey in the Interest of Pennsylvania Iron Men. "Wasmngtox, December 25. The following is given byihe Star as the reason for BandalPs southern trip: A number of members of congress and capitalists aro investing large sums of money in the iron and coal lands in Tennessee and Alabama and are preparing to open-up tho mining industries of that region. The coal and iron veins lie in parallel ridges, a few miles apart, passing through Alabama, Tennesseo.-SKentucky and into Virginia. In Alafama anttfTen- ncssee it is said to be the best in the world. Northern men are at work at Birmingham and the English and Tennesseeans are working out iron at South Pittsburg. Representative McMillan and his brother have bought 10,000 acres of coal and iron lands in that region since the adjourn ment oi last session. or a year they have been getting out iron be low the lowest price it can bo brought here from Europe and they are send ing pig iron to Pittsburg and Phila delphia cheaper than it can be worked there. For several years past the river and harbor bill has made appropriations to remove obstructions in tho Ten nessee river. This year an appropri ation of at least 30,000 will be made. When the work is completed there will be a water-way open all the year round from the iron furnaces of the south to Cincinnati, St Louis, Louis ville, Pittsburg and Philadelphia. Southern members say that when this is open the Pennsylvania fur naces will have to shut down, as tho southern furnaces can undersell any furnace in the world, and the ques tion of protection does not enter in to their calculations. The fact that the opening of the Tennessee meant so much to northern iron-workers has been kept a secret up to this time. This will sufficiently account for Mr. Randall's trip. m Christmas in Europe. Pabis, December 25. The day was dull for Christmas, except among tho Germans. Itinerants wero selling a political toy representing Bismarck and Ferry embracing. In Vienna tho day was unusually gloomy, owing to the bad condition of trade and tho damp weather. In Berlin there were the usual festivities in the imperial palace, un Uhnstmas eve tho em peror gave presents to the wholo household. The empress received Bismarck and his wife. France and Germany. London, December 25. A Bjrlin correspondent says: A secret con vention has been concluded between France and Germany, in accordance with which France is allowed unlim ited colonization in Morocco and Tonquin, and liermany, whiio re specting French possessions in Afri ca, is at liberty to annex territory anywhere not affecting French in terests.
