The Ortgoa Battalioa ef '49.
m A gray bearded M9er, recently ar
rived in to o, tells an interesting and
someKUat amusing: story of tho Ore
gon battalion, of ivbioh be iras a
member, which left St. Louis May
10, 1819. Tho battalion had beon re
cruited to fight tho Indiana ot Oro
gon, and consisted of 850 men, and
tho pack train of 350 six-mule teams.
Twelve wagons were loaded with mm,
and tho majority of tho officers,
among them the son of John J. Orit
tenden of Kentucky, 'fere drunk dur
ing the entire trip across' the plains.
The rank aad file was formed of the
slum of the essterm cities. It was
one ot the wiekedsst little arsaies
thst cTer srred Uncle San. The
cholera was Dreralent at the time in
civilized America, and almost every
night while inarching up the Platte
river, the drums sounded the ueatu
maroh ia camp. Front one to four of
tne soldiers died daily until tne
Kocky mountains were reaohsd. De
sertions were froquant. A dozen men
would leave in one night. Late in
tho fall the battalion arrived ia Ore
gon Oity, numbering twenty-nva zaaa,
all told. Not a drop of the twelve
wagon loads of rum was loft Next
spring the twenty-five men daaerted
and went to California. Oregon City

about this, and tho brood should ba

PILES! PILES! PILES!
X SURE CDKI FOUXft AT LAST!
NO ONE NEED SUFFER.
A sure cure for Blind. Bleedinc1
Itching and Ulcerated Files has beea
discovered by Dr. "Williams (an Indi
an Remedy,) called Dr. William's In
dian File Ointment. A single box has
cured the worst chronio cases of li
or 30 years standing. No one need
suffer five minutes after applying this
wonderful soothing medicine. Lotions
instruments and electuaries do moro
harm than good. William's Indian
Jfile Ointment absorbs the tumors,
allays the intense itching, (particular
ly at night after getting warm in bed,)
acts as a poultice, gives instant relief.
and is prepared only for Piles, itching
of the private parts, and for nothing
else.
Bead what the Hon. J. M. Cofflnber
ry of Cleveland sava about Dr. Wil
liam's Indian Pile Ointment: I have
used scores of File Cures, and ii af
fords me pleasure to say that I hare
never found anything whioh gave
such immediate and permanent relief
as JJr. William s Indian Ointment.
Hon. Judge W. P. Coons, Mayaville,
Ky., says: "I have suffered for years
with itching piles, and have used
many remedies. I have used Dr. Wil
liam's Indian File Ointment and been
cured while every other romedv has
failed." For sale by all druggists and
mailed on receipt of price, $1.00.
