IIAT STORIES.
"To be sure, rat catching is not as
said the rat catcher, ''but it requires
it great deal of skill to catch a rat
Come with me."
The reporter, the rat catcher and
bis dog climbed a hill and entered a
kitchen from which all tho furniture
bad been removed bat the stove. On
tho floor in the middle of the room
straw was laid an inch deep. A Large
walking cane stood in the corner.
The rat catcher untied a string from
the neck of a bug and. out came a
Inrge rat, who ran rapidly around the
four sides of the room, and, finding
no outlet, sought refuge beneath the
straw. Tho rat catcher then put his
band into another bag and drew out
out a ferret, whioh. he placed upon
the floor. The ferret moved slowly
around until ho Btruck the rat's
trail, whioh he followed in all its
windings. "When the ferret reached
tho straw the rat bounded out and
toolc another circuit nround the
room, but finding no way of escape,
in seeming desperation he ran up the
canu aud seated himself on the top.
The ferrot meanwhile had fol
lowed the trail with the tenacity of u
bloodhound. When he arrive J at
the foot of the cane he stopped. Fer
rets cannot climb. He sat at the foot
of the cane and waited. The rat b
enn to chatter with rage and fear.
His cry gradnally aro3e from a whim
ler to a shrill squeak. Then a glid
ing bundle of fur, gleaming teeth
and shining eyes came down tho
cane. The sinister ferret was on the
watch, and as the rat reached the
floor he darted like a flash and hu
ueedle-liko teeth were fastened in
the rat's neck. The momentum of
the rat's body carried the two animals
along the floor for two feet There
was a short strnggle,"n dead rat, and'
the ferret was restored to the bag.
"Rita never bite in the dark. I
have been bitten many time3, but al
ways after I have brought the animal
to Uje light," contiuued the ratcatch

"I took 14" rats out of that wall.
We took them to the farmer's kitch

their hind quarters, like soldiers
awaiting a charge, and began making'
the pecnliar noise which rats always
make when cornered. I had been!

struggling to get away. When I let
him go he charged the phalanx brave-1

the table, carrying a load of living
rats hanging from every part of his
body. Then I lot tin old dog go.

More Reciprocity.
No day now passes without a new
reofprocity treaty. The telegraph in
forms us ihut tua terms of treaties
with Guatemala and San Salvador
have been agreed upon and progress
has been made with a treaty with Co
lombia. The British West Indies arc
also maneuvering for reciprocity oa
tho same terms us tho Spanish An

havej-eciprocity treaties with Great
Britain, Prance and Germauy. If
reciprocity is to be the fashion Jet us
take it by wholesale and not in retail
lots. If it be a good thing for us to
admit from our southern neighbors,
free of duty, everything that Califor
nia or Oregou produce, it surely can
not bo a bad thing to admit from our
European allies, treo of duty, the ar
ticles which New England and Penn
sylvania produce. What is sauce for
the goose must surely be sauce for
the gander.
These eastern politicians includ
ing Mr. Arthur, Mr. Prelinghuysen,
Mr. McCulloch and the rest are act
ing as if this country were bounded
on the west by the Alleghany moun

mac. They cannot see any interest
outside of the little circle of seaboard
merchants and manufacturers in
which Ihey move. TLoy have all got

England, which produces no raw
materials, finds it 1 1 her interest to ad
mit them free. We shall be much
mistaken if the administration does
not find its pot projects met by a
sturdv opposition from the rep'resen

anu cue jracmo coast. At any rate,
therejwill-be an inquiry into the true
meaning and intent of these rooipro
