03 h$ gaitjj jtftoriaw. ASTORIA. OKECOS: 8ATURHAY DKCEMI'.EK 0 14 rzra Fi?sr sTEA.r piuktikg PRESS. At Ibis lime of the year anil month, seventy years no, the first news paper in the vorld was pi in ted by steam. That this newspaper should have been the London Times is the most natural thing imaginable, since ive are accustomed to think of that Jour nal as having led the vrorld for many years, until one of our own papers took the word out of its mouth, as we may say. It sounds like a fabulous statement, in the light of its immense circulation of to-day, and that the Times should have had an issue of only about four thousand cepies: but more than that number would have been imposbible with the re stricted means and methods of hand presses, as by the time any increased number of sheets could be Ftruck ofi in the old slow way the news would be no longer news, but would be com mon report. The second John W Iter, the fathei of the second proprietor of thai name, was much dissatisfied with the old process, its slow laboriousness, it- diminutive results in comparison with what might be, and its far tot small returns; for hf was a man ol energy and forecast, and Lo saw -what vrcte the possibilities in regard to circulating the news, and saw also, upon the receipt of increased profits, the opportunities of increasing the amount of news, with agents every where collecting it Giving the sub ject a great deal of thought, and convinced that the plan was feasible he had allowed Thomas Martyn, one of his compositors, and various olh ers as well, the use of his monex freely to work out their ideas 01 models of a self-acting printing press But whether their ingenuity failed or their courage for the pressmen were violently opposed to such v novelty, and determined that theii handiwork should bo superseded b no ma.hinery, even if obliged to ro sort to violence, as men at similai work have always done nothinp came of their endeavors, earnest al though they were. At Inst a Saxon by the name of Konig, with his as " aistant, Bauer, enlisted Mr. Walters attention, and in order that the might irosecute the bnsicess stc- cesBfu ly he afforded them use ot premises adjoining the Times prnt ing office, where they worked indus triously for three months, privately perfecting their machine. It would have been impossible that they should use the Times offices, on account of the indignation of the workmen, who saw tjeir livelihood about to be snatched away from them, although nothing was further from Mr. Wal ter's intention than this, sure as hi was that the increased faciliics of thr new methods jf h s collaborators succeeded in bringing their great ideas to fruition would make such a demand for news, and bring po inuci more news into the market, that then would be employment for moro men iu er t an for fewer. Tho samr 03U603 e djred it necessary to m--rounl the experimental work with cautioi ani secrecy. One can well imagine what en ex citing night it must havo been to Mr. Walter, that night befpre tho pro nounced success of the new machine. Ihere was not merely the natural in terest in an experiment, the natural curiosity concerning it, but it was the turning point of his own fortunes, and perhaps of civilization as well. All the pressmen had threatened de struction to any and every one who interfered with them. But that night these same pressmen remained idle, having been instructed, in order Bimply to throw them off their suspicion, lo suspend their work until some foreign news which was expected shonld arrive. It was very foreign news indeed for eign to the hopes of tho poor fellows when it did arrive. It needed the r.aolution and daring that he pos sessed when, at six o'clock in the dark of the morning, Mr. Walter went into the old press-room with a com pleted shet tho work of the new machine in his hand and quietly told tho men that if they used vio lence he had a force ready sufficient to quell any disturbance; that that was a copy .if the morning paper printed by steam; that the trial of tho machine h id met with n success exceeding his hopes; that they must needs submit, since there was nothing else for them to dx But he added with characteristic generosity, that if they were peaceable he should con tinue their wages till they could all Hod similar employment or till the expected enlargement of his own bus iness should give them employment at his own bands aga'n. Mr. Walter - Tfi'J tnfire T83 nothing else but acquiescence for the men, and in tho immense and sudden increase of bus iness they ot course lost nothing by it at nil. Konig's machine placed the form, inked it, adjusted tho paper, stamped the sheet, delivered it to the form for fresh use. all so quickly that it could work off eleven hundred sheets an hour. It was no less a revolution be cause no v it is replaced by one that works ofi" eleven thousand sheets an hour, to speak loosely. That night makes one of the epochs in the ad vance of humanity, and is a season to which commemoration is owed both by those who contribute to the press and by those who enjoy the work it gives the public: for with out it mnch of the world that is now in light would b3 in darkness, since it was tho initial of those greater ideas in the matter which havo made the work of the press almost as free! as the universal air.
