The whole could have been made in Olympia, including painting and put ting in position, at a cost not exceeding $10. "When the wind blows the fiercest from the east there is no difficulty in crossing Columbia bar. The river acts as a hngs bore, sucking the wind out to sea, and off the mouth it blows with unabated fury. On either side, toward Mackenzie head or off Clatsop spit it is comparatively quiet, and these sheltering shores enable a tug or vessel to lie at ease while a little ways either way, directly west of the mouth of the river the wind may be blow ing a living gale. Tho leading journals of this state and Washington territory are advocating the introduction of the boet-sugar industry in the northwest. John "Walters was on Seaside beach last Monday and found the dead body of a man "that had been cast up by the sea. It was that of a light complexioned man, light mustache, very tall, and well made. He was dressed in a dark brown over shirt, blue overalls and j imper, and had on red flannel underclothing. On his right arm was tattooed the Goddess of Liberty and on his left the letters "H. T." There is hardly a doubt but that it is the body of the seaman Henry Thomp son who was swept off the Willamette on the 3rd inst. 1 may be that the body of the mate, Callaghan, is washed ashore in the same vicinity. A Schcmo to Break Oat of the County Jail, Sheriff Boss has half a dozen boarders at his hotel who are in on sundry charges. though it transpired yesterday that they were all in for getting out. During the cold snap he has given them a little more freedom, ns tho jail is at best a cheerless placo, but last night they were deprived of all privileges. Yesterday morning in going his rounds wifh Charley Mofiitt, tho deputy, he no ticed a meaning glance pass between two of the prisoners, and "kept his eve peeled" to see what was going on. The result of his examination showed con siderable ingenuity in the plan of escape, which was all fixed, and would have been earned out without doubt yesterday. Oni of them, Marsala, better known as Frank Field?, whom Clark Loughery brought back from San Francisco on a charge of assaulting Metlin at Sand island last summer, is stud to be a tough customer, and Sheriff Boss decided he was the lead er. An examination of Marsala's eel showed that he had drawn three nine inch iron bolts. These bolts are driver, through ii studding made of a solid bai of iron ouo inch by six in the frame ol the door, and are appirently immovable By the aid of a piece of stout twine whicl he had concealed, Marsala at the expens. of considerable trouble, had succeeded in loosening and drawing these bolts, in some way he'd got hold of a hoop from i water p.nl out of which he made a saw. with the bolts he had broken the lock ot an unoccupied cell, and with his saw ht had cut a hole 12x29 inches in the floor ol an adjoining cell. The rocks beneath ht had excavated and carried into the celt with the broken lock, finishing his worL at dawn yesterday with the assistance of those of his comrades whom ho had pressed into the service. The sawed planks were deftly replaced and dust scattered so that a casual glance would discern nothing wrong. The saw, bolts, etc, were concealed and a hasty inspec tion of the cell would show nothing out of the way. When the sheriff charged Marsala with such treacherous return for his leniency he squared off a la Sullivan and started to put a head on that official. who in two rounds came off easy winner and flung the culprit into interior dark ness where there is weeping and gnash iug of teeth. It was a well planned scheme and but for timely watchfulness would nave been successful. 1VIXM ASD VFEATHL'R. Yesterday wa3 another season of dis comfort from tho rising of the sun to the going down of the same. The wind whistled, howaver, in a minor key and the snow drifted less than on Tuesday. Ev erything that stood, sat or laid on run ners was out bohind horse3 that carried jingling slcigbbells, and every boy under sixty that had a sled pulled it to tho top of the hill and shot swiftly to tho base with a cheer. Tho principal discomfort was a lack of water. This is no fault of the water company's. It is an inconvenience to which we are all liable at this time of the year, and other communities are in thcbame fix. As usual "the wires are down,1' and we are temporarily cut off from communication with the east. L'ho Reed started off on time and the Fleetwood also. The Reed got as far as Kalama where sho probably made a transfer, but no word bad been received ns to her whereabouts last night. The Thompson having failed to get away on boat and no Portland papers. The Ore gon came in in good time, and reported a stormy trip from San Franrisco; the Queen came down in the afternoon, and reported seven inches of snow in Port land and more coming. She smashed through ten miles of ice between the mouth of thoYillamette and St. Helens. She sails for San Francisco this morning. The river boat1? will have to be sheathed bsfore they can stand the ice in the river. Business of all kinds is dull, and the out look now is decidedly indicativo of a freeze-up. J CRT LIST. Y. Democrat. "Five million dollars!" "Yes, sir, five million dollars, of which two millions are spent for fireworks and three millions for uniforms, etc., 6very presidential campaign." Thus said Mr. James Palmer, the Koch ester fireworks maker, to our reporter's inquiry. "The average spent in off years for fire works is over ouo million dollars." "Do we import the bulk of our fire works"? No, air, we import nothing but fire crackers. We make the reBt in this coun try. There are only ten fireworks "estab lishments in America." Upon invitation of Superintendent Frederick Fitz Gichner, the reporter in spected the Palmer establishment not .vithout some fear and trembling at first. When the superintendent said he had oeen blown up twice, the reporter lurti ve iy asked: "Is not this business a little risky?" 'Yes, I suppose it would bo so consid ered by outsiders, but 1 nave encountereu greater dangers than any I find here and Jon't feel concerned." T don't quite catch your meaning?" "Well, f nave been in this business many years and the constant though un ooncious nervous strain has caused great er suffering than the explosions I have taken! Many a day 1 would bo very dizzy, and everything would get dark. At other times I could scarcely breathe from choking sensations. Then my ap pbtitu left me and I grew thin, weak, and ufeless. I was drowsy by day and wake ful by night. My sido pained me, my back ached, my limbs burned, I bloated fearfully and one leg got paralyzed. For ten months I suffered desperately, and two prominent physicians gave me up for a dead man, sure. "i'ou don't look it now?" "No, that's so, but it was a fact, just the same. When I found out my trouble, I at once resorted to Warner's safe cure and a dozen bottles put me in possession of the best health I ever expected to en joy, and I was pronounced incurably sick with Bright's disease. It is the most wonderful medicine in the world." "Indeed. You ar6 a fortunate man. Is there any falling off in the fireworks bus iness this year? "Not at all. On the contrary it grows more popular every Tear, and this year we have done an extraordinary business. The American people are getting quite as fond of display as the mercurial French man, and tUey manifest it by rockets and volcanoes; political banner, campaign uniforms, etc. I reckon that S10,0d0,OU0 won't cover the incidental political ex penses of a presidential campaign." FOBEIGX SALXOX REPORT. Salmon continues as great a drug in tbe market as evor, no inclination to buy being shown, even at tho very moderate prices which holders are prepared to ac cept, and nothing of consequence has been done in either old or new season s pack. London Orocer. Parcels from the cargo of the Abery- stwith Castle, the first arrival in London of this year's pack, have been on offer during tho week. Unly few sales nave been made, and dealers show but little disposition to go into stock. Holders of new pack refrain from pressing sales, ex cept at fair prices; whilst old salmon of ordinary quality hangs fire at 2s to 3s less money. Grocers1 Gazelle. Lxvebpool, November, 1834. The situation in salmon remains un changed, and we have no alteration in prices to report, tho wholo canned good trade is at present under a cloud. Corr. London Grocers1 Gazelle. Very little business is being dono in last season's pack of salmon, and attention to a great extent has been directed to the superior quality of the recent imports, sales of which have been made to some extent, whilst the largest proportion has been warehoused, awaiting higher prices at the turn of tho year. Meanwhile, par cels of the old pack are being purchased by country grocers at extremely low prices with the result that the fresh arrivals are much below their value. Corr. London Grocer. Woman Ererrubere. One of the women jurors of Washing ton territory asked the judge and each member of the jury with which she served to write in her album. The fol louring is the response of one of them, Mrs. C. E. Bowman of Seattle: "They talk about a woman's sphere As though it had a limit; There's not a place on earth or heaven, There's not a task to mankind given, Thero's not a blessing or a woe, There's not a whispered yes or no, Thero's not a life or death or birth. There's not a feather's weight of worth, Without a woman iu it. Too Grosi. The 238 joke is going the rounds. Two persons meet, and one says: "Say, did you hear that story, to-day, about 283?" "No," answered the other excitedly, "what is it?" "Oh, it's too gross, too gross entirely." replied his companion in a mournful voice. "Tell away," resumed tho first, "and I'll try to stand it.- If I must hear such dreadful things, I must." "Well," exclaimed his friend, "U4 is ono gross, and 239 is two gross, isn't it? Perhap3 in the wholo experience of those engaged in the grocery trado thore is no parallel to the extraordinary change which has suddenly come over tho de mand for canned salmon. That the sales have fallen off to an alarming extent is acknowledged on all sides, yet had it been otherwise it would have been still more 'strange, sinro the present state of affairs is only the natural result of "kill ing tho goose that laid the golden egg..' Our American cousins on tho Pacific coast have for some years past ignored both complaints and warnings. They persisted in packing a large proportion of badly preserved salmon, which the grocers of this country woro ill-advised enough to take because it was apparently cheap. Though the salmon was sound enough for, notwithstanding the scares and reports in tho "silly season," no sane person with any sense of taste or smell could eat a bad tin of salmon be lieving it to bo good yet, from one or other of many causes, much of it was neither inviting in appearance nor pala table to the taste. Thus, A-hile the gro cer was endeavoring jto supply his cus tomers with something cheap, he 011I3 succeeded in p dming off that which was nasty; and, since salmon i not a neces sary "article of food like bee id or sugar, but is mostly eaten as a relish or delica cy, in supplying unpalatable good the retailer took tho most effectual and rapid means of killing a good trade. Inferior salmon is dear almost at any price, and it is to be hoped after the se vere lesson the trade is now suffering un der, retailers will avoid old and inferioi stuff altogether. It does not follow, though, that high-pricod brands are necessarily good, lor the character of most brands varies from year to year; it therefore behooves buyers to find out early in the season which brands are turning out well. Thisyear, happily, the first arrivals of new salmon turn out splendidly, and this would lead one to believe the packers have at last realized that John Bull is tired of taking rubbish Such fine salmon has not been imported for many years past, and, as a proof of its excellence, in some of the piraels al seady examined scarcely a blown tin has been found, whilst in ordinary years 1 per cent, of blown is considered to be a fair average. Instead of the irregularity in color, absence of flavor, softness, resulting from over cooking, and the objectionable re sults from careless packing and hurried processing with which wo havo only been too familiar, wo have this year beautiful firm fish of uniform rich color and good flavor, leaving nothing to be desired. If only such fish ns this is distributed, it will not bo long before the popular taste for salmon Tevives. We must sound a note of caution, howovc-r, for our remarks cannot bo taken to apply to all the salm on packed this season. We can only speak of the out-turn of those vessels which bavo brought ns tho oarly ship ments of this year's pack. Wo only hope the following consignments will not show any serious falling off in quality. Apparently good salmon will be plentiful and cheap, and a few samples of the early 1881 pack will soon convince the trade generally that the lessons of last year have not been thrown away on the packers in Oregon. Let us hope, then, that grocers on this side of the Pacific will not perpetrate the folly of driving away their customers by supplying unpal atable "relishes," but will for the future devote more careful attention to the se lection of canned salmon. London Gro eer. While there is considcrablo reason for the strictures of our English contempo rary regarding the "large proportion of badly preserved salmon," it is but simple justice to our Columbia river packers to say that the above remarks do not apply to this river. By care and experience tho salmon canners here have the reputation of their brands too fully established to bo more than temporarily injured by any attempt on the part of of outsiders to foist infe rior grades on the English market under cover of their well-earned reputation.
