He thought the swate should take tip and refer to n new Loulereuce committee the regular ap pioprialion bill, which was before tho conlirnce at the close of lue last o-io:, especially as that bill con tained an important provision relat ing to new shi s. General Grant es presso0 a hope that the bill will be withdrawn, as under no circum stances could he accept a pension, even if the bill passed both houses, and received the approval of the presi dent Mitchell stated that he had introduced the bill because he was chairman of tLe committee on pen sions, and the president had rec ommended a pension for Gene.al Grant. Dolph called up tho bill reported from the committee on railroads at Tlhe la,t esion, pioviding for incorpo ration of the Spokane 1 alls and Cajur d Alene railroad company m the ter ritories of Idaho and Washington. Harrison criticised the Dill as cov ering a class of legislation properly belonging to tue territories. i?rom the number of branches provided for by the bill he thought it likely the company could monopolize all the passes throughout the mountains, and from other provisions it seemed the company could secure lands enough to absor.t the-public domain, as well as railroads in the two territories named. The pueblo of Acoma, situated ninety miles west of Albuquerque, is one of the most remarkable commu nities in New Mexico or the United States. To reach it take tho Atlantic and Pacific railroad to McCarthy sta tion, and then transfer to an Indian pony and ride eighteen miles south by east When near your journey's end you descend almost imperceptibly into the valley six miles in width, in the middle of" which stands a butte, and on the top of this is Acoma. Eight hundred people are living there, and they and their ancestors have gath ered there the sum of their posses sions for nearly three centimes. This bntte is one or many that are the remnauts of a mesa that has been worn away by the erosion of the ages, and survives only iu ll.it topped mountains here and there. The val levs between are fertile, and untold generations of men have seen them covered with waving grain and flocks of sheep. Some time in the seventeenth cen tury the Liguno, or valley Indians made war upoiL.tlje Acomas for the possession of Vhe couutry, and the latter, beiug the weaker, occupied this butte as a defensive position believed to be impregnable. Their jndgment has been abundantly indicated. It has proved a Gibraltar of strength and safety. The comparison is not inappropriate, and iu approaching it from the north I was struck with the resemblance to the pictures I have seen of that grim fortress that frowns over the straits to the Mediterranean. The height above the valley is nearly 100 feet and tho walls in several places nearly perpendicular. There are two means of ascent, one by n flight of stens cnt into tho face of the wall and rising at an angle of 40 degrei and the other by a fissure in tno rod leading up iu the heart of the moun tain. Both wavs have been trodden titt ImtMnti rrif ii n 1 1 1 4-lirt pfonc irJ Mll wed out like shallow troubs. Eitber sexcPe(jin gl y difficult and neither is tolerablv safe. The Indians have carved a representation of the accident on a rock near where it occurred, which scarcely serves to steady the nerves of those who go by that route. Tho top of the elevation is level and contains an area of sixty or seventy acres. At one side stands tho pueblo, a blunt pyramid of adobe and stone honeycombed with rooms; at the other, the church and graveyard, and near the center a pond of pure water thirty feet in depth nqd several rods in extent Santa e, iv.
