ACROSS THE CONTINENT. , Telegraphic arjnounceiaent ia made to-day that after December 1 trains will run regularly direct between Omaha and Portland, Oiegon, and that the time wi 1 be, for a throngh trip, three days. Hpw that an nouncement will make the pulse3 of the old. mossbacka up under the shadow of Mount Hood bound. They will fihake their h ads and declare at first that thvy do not believe it, and will show why it iuuat be mpossi le. S o fancy the reasoning will be about as follews: Yer see, Jfarier, it cati't be. Don't yer re t ember, we was fifty-throe days makin' it from tho Missoury to the Kockies, 'nd wc had, five yoke of the Smartest steers ever raised in Mis soury. j hen we wus forty-lhree days on the way to Sody Springs, and from there in we wus seventy-five days, and they wus rough ones, wasn't they, MarierY Now they talk of makin' 1 in three days. I won't believe it till I see it." And when assured of the f aot, when he sees a morning paper only three d'ys from Omaha, his next thought will be: "Whar kin we go, Marier, thar's no more places left wnar a man kin be quiet." It is a marvelous tuing, to be sure. There are millions of peoplo still alive who in childhood looked upon the depths of Oregon as a place as far removed aud as impossible of ap proach as central Asia itself. Now, over mountain and river, tho way is made smooth, and tho time is so anni hilated that the roar of Niagara is but four days removed Irom the roar which 13 made when the big seas comes in from the west and make their war on tho Columbia's bar. u'remont is called "The Path Finder," but Fremont was months and months making this distance, Lewis and Clarke were given grants of lands and high offices for doing in two years and four months what the locomotive now does in six days. Surely tho cry of "About face, universe! Nations, forward marchr is heard in theso modern daj's as it never was before. There is not a great thing left f r mortals to perform except to do their duty. Into the three-score years and ten of modern lives the work of more than tho men of old performed in cen turies is crowded. Ye compass a continent in a week and the gorgeous natural scenes of the land are by the locomotive crowded so close together that, watching for them from the train window they move past an but a panorama whilo wo look. We never should forget that no other peoplo oyer beforo possessed such opportuni ties as do urs; that if with them we fail of making a worthy record, theu wo are poor material indied. Salt Lake Tribune. Sugar Cheaper Than Dirt. It will be news to many who havo not closely perused the mirket that sugar, next to wheat, has run lowest down tho scale of prices during the last few months. The fact has not been demonstrated to tho people of this country in any substantial manner, nor will it be likely to prove any ad vantage to American consumers to learn that sugar is so cheap in .Lon don that it has been seriously pro posed as a substitute for other prov ender to fatten hogs and cattle. Think of common sugar at half a penny a pound, and the raw roduct of India selling at seven shillings a hundred. This condition of the mar ket has been brought about mainly by over-production of the beet pro-J what it is again to contend with Eti duced article from Germany and ropean powers at home. French cap France, the annual product of the italists have expended sixty million former country being 900,000 tons. dollars on the scheme, and the The sugar-beet growers of these coun-J promptness with which another sixty tries are just now experiencing about . was forthcoming gives indications the samo drawbacks from ruinously that if the money holds out the de low prices as the American wheat- (termination is strong enough to carrv grower, and tne rate3 governing tho it through, if men can bo found ami prouucia oi doiu oi mese inuustnes are fixed by the same market, that of Liverpool. Notwithstanding these facts regarding two of the most im portant staple necessities, tho Ameri can will continue to sweeten his ! coffee and tea with sugar at 10 cents a pound, and the German and French man will go on eating their pancakes and biscuit at three cents a pound because of the gram laws. The above are some of tho jewels that political economists have hung in the ears of the commercial system of these threo countries. For some years the selectmen of the adjoining towns of Avon and Can ton, Conn., have paid a bounty of 50 cents oacn ror au wooacnucKa Kuieu. The Avon selectmen required the tail. as a vonoher, and by the Canton se lectmen the ears wero taken as proof. Kecently it was discovered that the number of animals on which the two townB paid bounty was precisely the same. Then it dawned on the two honorable bodies that the unprinci pled boy hunters of the two tqwns had collected 50 cents from each town whenever they bagged a ground-hog. "Whereupon the selectmen of both towns with great dignity decided to pay no more bounties for wood chuoks. Made Short Work or IU Mr. Z. O. Batson of McAllister, Cross Koads, Tenn., was so.ely troub led with dyspepsia. He writes. "I have been using Brown's Iron Bit ters; only used it a short time, and think I am well." It is ono of the beauties of the good work accom plished by this wonderful iron tonic, that it is done -so speedily. The work .,is-.. permanent, too. Cures weakness, liver and kidney complaints, eta. The Popnlar Veto. When the first election returns came in, with overwhelming majori ties for Cleveland from such states as Texas and Georgia and uncertain returns from Illinois and "Wisconsin, it seemed probable that Cleveland would have a majority of the popu lar vote, even if he were not elected president. But it seems that, after all, Blaine got a plurality of tho nop ular voto. and Cleveland, like Hayes, and Lincoln at his fiist election, is a minority president. Blaine's plurality is given bv the Chicago Trib une as 5,712. Garfield's plurality was Mfe, not 9018, as the Tribune gives it Tiidcn's majority over Hayes was 252,224. Grant's majority over Greeley iu 1872 was about 763,000, and over Seymour in 1863 about 300,000. Lincoln's ma jority over McCIellan was about 400,000. In 1860 Lincoln got 1,886, 452 ont of 4,680,193 votes cast, the balance, 2,813.741 votes being di vided between Douglas, Breckinridge and Bell. In 1855 Buchanan only got 1,833,169 votes out of 4,033,967 votes cast, the balance being divided between Fremont and Fillmore. The Whigs defeated Fremont, as Bo'l tried ineffectually to defeat Lincoln four years later. It seems wonderful that with all the noise and olamor of our presi dential elections, and the constant predictions by orators on each side that the country will be ruined if their man is defeated, our elections should be so close. It 13 not so in other republics, such as France, or Mexico. There the winning side generally get3 three-fourths or five sixths of the voto3. It is curious, too, to note how often a disaffection from one party is offset by a corres ponding disaffection from the other. It is estimated in New York lhat tho number of votes which Cleveland got from Bepublican mugwumps was exactly balanced by tho number of votes whioh Blaine got from Demo cratic bolters. Had it not been for the Kev. Mr. Bnrchard the latter would probably havo outnumbered tho former, without taking into con sideration the heavy draft on the Be publican voto by thoso who cast their ballots for St. John. A county treasurer in New Hamp shire was forced to acknowledge the other day that the county strong-box was not only empty, but that his books wouldn't balance within $18, 000. There was a rumpus and an in vestigation, but the treasurer carried a serene expression and was ready to answer all questions. 4,It really isn't my fault." he prodeeded to explain. "You know we want a new bridge over Lickskillit creek? I had hoped to build it without calling upon the taxpayers. That S18.0UO went to buy wheat, and I calculated on a profit of at least S3.003 in one deal." "And you lost all!" "Every dollar. Wheat went right down on me." "You might havo known it!" shrieked one of his bondsmen. "How? Do I control tho wheat market? I'm sor ry, gentlemen, real sorry, but I have the consolation of knowing that while my two bondsmen lose S18.030, tho toiling masses will havo the benefit of the decline in wheat."
