Ct Whi gailjj gStftomu. ASTORIA, OREGON: SUNDAY....... -TUXEMBEKT.IBM Blaine has got eight gold-headed canes. A. Southixgton, Ct nnecticut, man charged neighbors twenty-five cents each for roma'ning in his store to bear election returns. Mexico has decided to excel at the New Orleans exposition. Poor as she is she has contributed $200, 000 for the purpose. The averago size of the American family is 5.01. The decimal probably represents the dude, but the statis ticians have got it rather large. Thebe are 1,403 dust-women in England and Wales, who spend their lives in raking over dust heaps for what gain they may find. And they like the work The Preach Admiralty are now having thirty vessels constructed' in the government dock yards, and fif teen in private yards. Fourteen of them are ironclads and are estimated to cost S26.000.000. The two princi pal ships, the Admiral Baudin and the Formidable are to cost 2,200, 000. If , Oregon and Washington in crease in population in the nest five years in the same proportion that they have in the last five, the terri tory will have more inhabitants than the state a singular commentary on a policy on the part of the govern ment that admits Nevada and keeps out Dakota and Washington. An idle word may be seemingly harmless in its utterance, but let it be fanned by passion, let it bo fed with the fuel of misconception, of evil intention, of prejudice, and it will soon grow into a sweeping fire that will melt the chains of human friendship, that will burn to ashes many cherished hopes, and blacken many a fair name. "Hakd times" are not confined a'one to the Pacific coast Indeed, we on this slope have better times than are enjoyed by any other sec tion of the Union, From all parts of the Mississippi valley and the Atlan tic slope come dismal accounts of factories closing, mills shutting down and thousands out of employment. This in a country where the mercury sinks to 30 degrees below zero means untold misery and death. It is given out that serious defects in the civil service rules have been discovered. No donbt they exist, and it is more than likelv that by the time .the coming attorney-general gets to feeling at home in his new office he will be able to point out more of them that up to that date had been overlooked. It is even strongly intimated that the law itso'f will not hold water if put to the test. Taere are many indications that it may prove a somewhat leaky affair under a Democratic administration The present year will be known in political history as the year of "close shaves." A plurality of 1,100 in New York decides the presidential contest The control of the Illinois legislature depends upon a single member, car rying with it the choice of a United States senator. In New Jersey the senate is a tie, with one district yet in dispute, the settlement of which involves the selection of a chief jus tice, a state treasurer, and other im portant officers. Several other states present very slender party majorities in their legislatures. And even in Missouri the Democratic candidate for governor pulls through by a ma jority of only 503. Alii are busy in this worldbusy writing epitaphs. None of us let a day pass without doing something in this line, and we are busy, not in writing epitaphs for others, but in writing our ewn: and we are making it very sure that people will read those epitaphs when we are gone. Shall we not b3 remembered? If not by many, certainly by a few, and that remembrance we aro makin sure of by the present character of the lives we lead. Our characters are the inscriptions we are making on the hearts of those we know, and who will survive us. We do not leave this to others. We are doinir it our. selves. Others might falsify and de ceive by what they might sav of na but we tell the truth when we writo our epitaphs. The aotions of our passing lives are facts visible, plain, undeniable. We engrave them on the minds of all observera What kind of epitaphs are we writing? Will they be read with joy or sorrow? The epitaphs we write to-dav, and to morrow, and to the end, aro not for the stone that tells where we lie, but for the memory of every one who Jemwci. NEW TO-DAY.
