Czj Its ga gistodan. ASTORIA, OREGON: SUNDAY. ...NOVEMBER 30" 1BS1 THE FIRST PRESIDENTIAL ELEC TION. When the first presidential election took plac3 the Union contained only ten state3, for the other three had not accepted the constitution. 1'he 'sen ators and congressmen assembled in New York city, and it was nearly a month before a quorum was obtained. This took place on the 6th of April, 1789, and the first step was the elec tion of a president, Washington re ceiving the entire sixty-nine votes. The scene of this grand national event was the old city hall, corner of Wall and Nassau streets, the site be ing now occupied by the treasury. The election of Washington (includ ing both terms) was the first and, probably will be the last unanimous vote on such an occasion. A very embarrassing question was the title which the head of the nation should receive. In the senate it was first proposed that he should be called "His Excellency." This, however, was by qpme considered hardly of sufficient dignity, and it was deter mined that the address should be, "His Highness, the President of the United States and the Protector of their Liberties." The lower house objected to this as inconsistent with American simplicity, and held that he should be addressed merely as "The President." The senate for awhile adhered to its method, but eventually gave way to the represen tatives, in which they are approved by public opinion. Twenty-four days after election Washington was inau gurated, anu men a procession was formed marching to St. Paul's church in order to ask the divine blessing on the newly-formed government. If the election of Washington was unique, his arrival was no less so. He was the first president and probably will be the last to reach tho seat of government in an open boat. Goin back to his eleotion, it may be men tioned that congress sent one of its members to notify him, and. as it wa3 a four days' journey, the messenger rjached Mount Yernon by the 11th. Washington was soon ready, and made the journey on horseback, attended b his su t?, which included Tobias Lear, his favorite secretary. He was welcomed everywhere with tho high est honors, and his route lay through Trenton, which was tho scene of his first victory. On reaching New Brunswick he found, a barge of state awaiting him, each of its rowers be ing tho captain of a ship. In addi tion to the crew was the committee of reception, which included the mag nates of the nation, and on this barge the first president was conveyed to the city. It was a rather slow voyage of fifteen miles down to the mouth of the Karilan, and then from tho Staten island channel, was a heavy pull of eight miles, but, slow as it might be, it was better than land carriage, ai d six hoars after leaving New Bruns wick the first president landed at tho foot of Wall street Tho same dis tance is now made by rail in less than an hour. Ho reached tho city just seventeen days after his election, and his inauguration took place just a week after his arrival. He was the only president elected and inaugu rated in New York, and New Yqrk has responded to the honor by erecting a statue to the father of his country on the spot where he took the oath of office. The latest addition to tho line of illustrious idiots known as cranks is an individual who is selling guide books to Heavenwith a map of eli gible lots in the New Jerusalem. His intentions may be good but he would bo better appreciated if he would devote his attention to the topography of the country in tho im mediate vicinity of salt creek. A re liable guide to that mythological re gion would be eagerly sought after by the many who were called but not ohosen, in the late campaign. The seriousness of tho rabbit pest in Australia is indicated by tho fol lowing from an Australian paper: "In the course of an address which the Bishop of Melbourne delivered at the Kyneton Mechanics' Institute on Friday night, he told his audience that only the other day ho had re ceived a letter from a gentleman ask ing him to appoint a day of prayer that God would strike all rabbits with sterility. The Bishop requested his hearers not to laugh, tot ho was .quite serious." In the election of Voorhees the people of Washington territory havo ried as loudly as they can for the forfeiture of the Northern Pacific land grant. They aro in as much a majority there as the citizens of Ore gon are in favor of forfeiting the As toria land grant. It remains to be etn what congress will do. A Washington diispatch says: Re publicans holding the best paying offices aro looking about very indus triously for ways to keep them, their favorite plan appears to be to have the Republican majority in the senato stand on the fighting line at once, and reject Cleveland's appoint ments as fast as they come along, but if this plan were attempted it would not work, and it is not receiv ed with favor by tho Republican leaders. A president, even with the senate against him, unless he at tempts unreasonable things, will win in the end, as the law stands. Tho Democrats found it so, even in Hayes' time. President Arthur also discov ered a way to have his appointments confirmed when the Democrats had the senate, and it is a common saying that certain Democratic senators fared bter than they would have fared with a Democratic president Besides there is not a sufficient ob ject to induce the Republicans to attempt such a fight One scarcely thinks of coral as growing under the ice-swept and foggy seas of tho Newfoundland banks. Yet on the eastern slope of Banquereou is an area of bottom sev eral miles in extent so covered with a growth of coral that trawls set upon it; aro rarely recovered. The fisher men call it the stone fence, and avoid it as far as possible. A scientific observer claims that the flatness of the earth at tho polo brings the polar ocean thirteen miles nearer than any other portion of the globe to the central ball of fire upon which he believes the earth to be built. Consequently the heat is so great that the water could never freeze over, and if there is a sea at that spot it must be an open one. Thanksgiving days were not un usual in Europe three or four cen taries ago, it is stated, but the first day thus set apart for the purpose in this country was in July, 1623, by Governor Bradford. In 16S0 the cus tom became an annual one. Ben ButiiER has been presented with a gold spoon by a Brookyn lady. He will probably send it to the New Orleans exposition. Spukgeon saj's men aro growing better. Ho has not been reading the papers during the recent campaign nous. In Astoria, November 27th, 1884 the wife of J. E. Thomas, a son. to NEW TO-DAY.
