PhiiiAPEIiPMA, Nov. 25. Tho Times lias two columns of Augusta specials on Blaine's home life. They declare positively that Blaine tlidiiot want tlie presidential nomination. This is attested by his neighbors. It opptessed him more than most peo ple will ever be able to understand. He almost faltreed in the presenco of the great responsibility thrust upon him. He had not expected that the use of his name in tho convention, which he had permitted in order to defeat Edmunds aud Arthur, could result in his nomination. Instead of controlling tho convention for some one else, as he had anticipated, that body controlled itself for him, and he found himself with a jewel that he did not want In a few days Blaine's family will go to Washington for the winter, aim ply following his rule of the last twenty years. Thero they will follow their customary habits of life, and re ceive and be received as though they had suffered no disappointments. People who expect to find him sour and ill tempered after this defeat, have reckoned without their host. The other class who thought ho would weaken and decline in health, if he failed to reach the presidency, may be prepared to see the same fresh, breezy man as when he was on the higher wave of public favor. He intends to remain in public view, and it is more than Likely that he will accept a seat iu congress after his literary task has been completed. Either Senator Hale or Congressman Millikan would re tire to give place to Blaine, and in re turn Halo could become governor. Fryc would not yield unless com pelled to.and it would have kept Blaine busy to beat him if he tried. Thero is a general feeling that the matter can be arranged to accommodate all statesmen. The Times' special says that Blaine's antagonism to Edmunds and Arthur grows out of the latter's reflection upon his South American policy, and his efforts to get Conk ling returned to the senate after ho had. resigned. He had hoped to bo secretary of state with Arthur's suc cessor. Edmunds helped to take a part of Xew England from him, twice, when Blaine had been within a shad ow of the nomination of the presi dency. The Scourge In the South. Lynchbuhg, Va., Nov. 25. Tho following is from a well-known preacher in tho southwest of Virginia: "Latest advices concerning tho epi demic in "Wise, Lee, Dickinson and Buchanan counties are heartrending. On Guest's river, "Wise county, with in a radius of four miles, are thirty cases of disease. In one instance a father, mother and six children died. Many persons die for want of atten tion. Business is suspended, all be ing concerned with sick and dying. Six persons were buried in one grave yard in one day. Tho disease is as suming a milder form in some localities. Not less than 175 of the best citizens of "Wise county alone have died during tho last few days. The disease has made its appearance in Lee county, and several deaths have occurred. More worthy people never called more loudly for relief than these. They need nurses, med icines and a committee of intelligent physicians to diagnose the disease and stop its terrible march." Always on the Whipped Side. It is reported on the best of author ity that an old farmer residing near Brownsville, this county, called his three grown sons together on the morning of election day and spoke as follews: "Now, boys, ever sinco you have been of age you voted the Dem ocratic ticket All my life I voted the Democratic ticket. For twenty four years I have been licked on the presidential question, and every time you voted for president you were also whipped. Now, I am 80 years of age, and this no doubtwill be my last vote at a presidential election. Now, if it suits you, and in your eyes is good, suppose all four of us vote the Bepublican ticket, and so instead of being again licked, why, wo will be at last on the winning side. I would like to have the satisfaction of being on the big heap at my last vote any how." The sons to humor tho old man, agreed to his proposition, and that township made a gain of eight votes for Blaine. At last accounts the old man was extremely down hearted. Reading Eagle. Y.. says: "After having used Scott's Emulsion with de emed benefit upon myself, I have-taken great pleasure in recommending it since in the various conditions of wasting in which it is indicated." New Yoek, Nov.25 A special from "Washington says: There are two views among Democrats a3 to wheth er Hendricks is going to be some thing more than former vice-presidents have been. Democrats coming from the west and south especially have this impression, on account of Hendricks'experience and Cleveland's inexperience, and they look to the former as the proper cabinet-maker. Shlloh's Catarrh Bemedy a posi tive cure for Catarrh, Diptneria and Canker Mouth. Sold by W. E. Dment Completion of thp Oregon Short Line. Huntington, Nov. 25. About 300 people gathered at the junction of the Oregon Short Lino and the O. B, & N. this afternoon, with fine weather and a clear sky. At 3:30 Henry B. Thielsen, chief engineer of the O. B. &N., set the spike, and E. 0. Sraeed, assistant chief engineer of tho Union Pacific railway, struck the first blow, after which Dr. Keene, H. S. Kowe, B. M. Steel, Senator Slater and others drove it home. Three cheers were given for the Oregon Short Lino and thruo more for tho O. B. & N. The train ran down over the gap to the Snake river bridge, built of steel and a magnificent structure, after which all started back to Portland. The first passen gers through for the east by this line were Senator James H. Slater and daughter, Jasper Baboook and J. M. Goodwin. The Salt Lake road is fully ballasted from Huntington to "Weiser, and they expect to make good time. There was fine weather all day, and everybody is in good spirits. Tho O. B. & N. road from Umatilla to Huntington is undoubtedly the best constructed line of new track on the Pacific coast if not in the United States. Through freight will be re ceived at Portland and Omaha, com mencing to-morrow. Passenger ser vice will be inaugurated Monday, Deoember 1. Curious Technicality in West Virginia. New York, Nov. 25. It is said a curious technicality has arisen in West Virginia, which may change tho state government and possibly give the electoral voto of the state to Blaine. At the October election a constitutional amendment was adopt ed, changing the election of state offi cers from October to November. A number of prohibitionists immedi ately put a ticket for state officers in the field. It also bore the names of the Bepublican presidential electors, and in the fourth district the name of the Bepublican candidate for con gress. At the November election about 15,000 of these votes were cast and 500 in the Fourth district These were thrown ont, electing the Demo cratic candidate by 104 majority.. A recount is called for, which it is said will elect the Bepnblican congres sional candidate and probably tho Bepnblican electoral ticket. The Pursuit of Binder. Up to a late hour '"this morning nothing had been heard of John Binder, the man who shot Hans Boch at Albina last Sunday morning. Sheriff Jordan went to The Dalles on Tuesday in response to a tele gram from Sheriff Crossin there, who had arrested a man who answered Binder's description. Sheriff Jordan was expected back last night, but up to 1 o'clock this morning had failed to put in an appearance. Boch, Binder's victim, was resting a little easier yesterday, but the chances of his ultimate recovery are exceedingly slim. News, 26th. Two Coldest Places. New Yobk, Nov. 25.
