The American Newspaper.
A newspaper is a business enter
prisa, and must be conducted on busi
ness principles. Meu arc constantly
asking favors from newspapers, which
means a sacrifice of space represent
ing money, -who would never dream,
of asking lawyers to take cases with-!
out fees, or expect their doctors to
take their pay in thanks. The dead
head is disappearing from other de
partments of business life, and tho
newspaper dead-head, distinguished
thongh he may be, must follow. News-'
papers, being business enterprises,
must live in a business way. If the
public does not support tho best j
newspapers, it must expectto see the
worst newspapers thrive. The daily
journal is a product rather than a
force. It will not only reflect but-,
represent the age it lives in. It is
true, and especially true of our own
country, that newspapers in the hands
01 men naving convictions and be
lieving that they could, with this
modern lever, help to move the world,
have accomplished great things.
Without them the great movements
of the past century for tho further
ance of personal, religious and politi
cal liberty would have traveled at a
snail's pace. But this was possible
ouly because they had the support of
the best men and women of the com
munity. The newspapers oan lead,
but tho leadership implies a follow
ing, and where none will follow none
will bo brave enough lo lead. As a
rule, newspapers are what their read
ers make them. The responsibility
of the subscriber is as great in its way
as that of the editor. The surest way
of keeping tho standards of our jour
nalism high, and of raising them, is
for that portion of the public which
knows the necessity of an able and
dignified press to withhold its sup
port altogether from newspapers
which cater to depraved tastes and
are reckless of the truth, and to give
it to newspapers which can be safely
taken into the family, and are not
only decent, but just. New York
Tribune.
Giving Way to Mood.
It is unphilosophical and wrong to
yield to moods. They rob life of
much of its enjoyment. The mind is
as amenable to tho will as is the body.
The most productive mental workers
in all departments, are those who
have their faculties under discipline,
and who go regularly to their mental
tasks and compel the obedience of
the mind. To those who habituate
themselves to this, and hold moods
under control, there is no difficulty
in performing prescribed tasks at al
lotted times. And such persons en
dure longest, because of the regulari
ty of their habits. Moodiness is,
indeed, a form of disease. It draws
on tho nerves and gradually leads to
nervous prostration. "When it con
trols the will, it has gained headway
that is very dangerous. And thus
its natural tendency is to ruin health
and happiness. To repress and over
come it, is to suppress a form of dis
ease, which in its further develop
ments is distressing and dangerous.

PILES! PILES! PILES!
X SURE CUKE FOUSD AT LAST!
NO ONE NEED SUFFER.
A sure cure for Blind, Bleeding'
Itching and Ulcerated Piles has been
discovered by Dr. "Williams (an Indi
an Bemedy,) called Dr. "William's In
dian Pile Ointment, A single box has
cured the worst chronic cases of 23
or 30 years standing. 2o one need
suffer live minutes after applying this
wonderful soothing medicine. Lotions
instruments and electuaries do moro
harm than good. "William's Indian
Pile Ointment absorbs the tumors,
allays the intense itching, (particular
ly at night after getting warm in bed,)
acts as a poultice, gives instant relief,
and is prepared only for Piles, itching
of tho private parts, and for nothing
else.
Bead what the Hon. J. M. Cofiinber

used scores of Pile Cures, and it af
fords mo pleasure to say that I have
