River men tell of heavy fos on the lower Willamette and Colombia. The Oregon Improvement Co. give no tice of great reduction in price of coal. It is particularly desired the old board of fire delegates meet at tho office of C. W. Ifulton this evening at 8 o'clock. The Emma Hume is fast being pat in nautical trim, and presents a handsome appearance, as she lies at the Main street wharf. It is now considered certain that Voor hees is elected congressional delegate from Washington territory hi' something over 100 majority. Tickets for the Astoria Ladies' Coffee Club entertainment to-morrow evening are procurable at tho drug and book stores, U. i. Cooper s and 1'rael JJros. At four o'clock yesterday afternoon a loaded bark was reiorted outside with pilot on board; the wind was blowing 4. miles an hour at the cape and heavy rain was falling. The Cwm Donhln cleared for Qaeens town yesterdaj', with 35,453 bus wheat, worth 23.300. She has a queer name and is barkentine rig, tliough of greater tonnage than many barks. Daniel Chambers, aged 40 years, died at his residence on Cedar street, yester day morning of typhoid fever. Tho fu neral, will be from his late residence at two o'clock this afternoon. "Ultimate America" is tho subject of Rev. Jos. Cook's lecture at the l,resT'y terian church this evening. Tickets, $1, can be procured at tho drug or book stores. The lecture begins at 8 o'clock. A neighbor inquires if it would not lie wise to have the lecislalure enact a law this winter, forbidding any but citizens of the state to take salmon in the waters of the state, including the Columbia river. La Grande claims "tho finest school house in the state, outside of Portland."' Astoria has a verj' fine school house which cost 30,000, and it is questionable if La Grade has one that is larger or presents a finer architectural appearance. The Yaqulna Mail, Published at Mew port, is to hand. It is an eight-page weekly, edited by E. G. Jones, is well printed and full of interesting news. It talks loudly for its section and deserves substantial support. A meeting of tho Blaine and Logan club was held last evening at tho wigwam at which the accounts of the campaign were audited and all outstanding indebt edness ordered paid. The club discharges every dollar of financial responsibility and thus steps off tho stage. There are in tho territory of Washing ton including postoffices. land offices, custom house, Indian service, district judges and clerks, internal revenue offi cials, surveyors, etc., about T00 federal officials. Republicans at present occupy all, or nearly all, these places. The attention of tho charitably dis posed is directed to a sad case that calls for that assistance that Astoria always gives the deserving. Nearly opposite Robert Carruthers' house has till recent ly lived Daniel Chambers, a hard work ing man who did whatever he could find to do and tried his utmost to .keep his family decently and comfortably. Yes terday ho died of typhoid fever. Ho leaves a widow and live children, tho eldest not ten years old. They are in sore need, and prompt assistance is neces sary. Food and clothing and a little money from those able to give would be most acceptable. More need not be said. The Lecture To-nlsht. In his journey across tho continent the Rev. Jos. Gook whom critioal Boston al most idolizes, has attracted tho utmost attention. His breadth of thought, wealth of imagery, fervid imagination and brilliant oratory are alike the theme of tho press and public and his every appearance is hailed with pleasure by orowded audiences. To-night ho lec tures in this city on "Ultimate America." Tho subject is invested by tho speaker with an extraordinary amount of inter est and to hear him" will be an event worthy of remembrance. 'Tis seldom that Astoria enjoys an opportunity to hear such a famous man, and our citi zens will doubtless avail themselves of the chance. The lecture will be at the Presbyterian church, beginning prompt ly at eight o'clock. C. H. Cooper's leading drv goods and clothing house will close Thanksgiving day. Thursday, the 27th inst. To the Editok or The Oeegexian: Tho election of Voorhees as delegate j from Washington territory goes well i along with the general sweep of tho year. and it will maKe tho settlement of some mixed questions easier than would be possible were there to be no ropresenta five Democrat in Washington from this section under the Cleveland administra tion. Mr. Voorhees will say who shall have tho offices. This is pretty much settled. It would not bo right for Hailev, the Democratic jack-mormon elected" from Idaho to do this, yet there must be a representative with whom the president and cabinet officers can consult whenever questions of appointment in Oregon shall come np: so it is nrranced that Voorhees shall be the man. It will take n load off the leaders here; who cannot afford to bo continually run ning to Washington. Dell and Jeffries and Robie and Joe Teal and Noltner and Kelly and Grover need not bother their brains. Voorhees is to settle all ques tions. Thero may bo petitions and counter-petitions, but the quiet territo rial hand of Voorhees will at last place tho men. When Voorhees finally consented to attend to tho Oregon appointments, it was after some pressure and persuasion, and after he had been made to see that it was only "turn-about," which is counted fair play in matters political as well as in other matters. Tho Republi cans in the Oregon delegation have been dictating territorial appointments to Re publican administrations for a long time; and now, with no Democrat in Washing- tory delegation is undoubtedly tho proper man. This was tho argument that final ly settled it, and now Voorhees is close as an oyster on Oregon matters, depend ing upon an adviserwho knows the Dem ocrats, though not living among them. The Democratic managers of Oregon made such a flat performance of their campaign that they cannot claim to have help Cleveland any, though they had some of tho general fund; so they are "let out" from any part or lot in the dis tribution. Tim twlttnr of tlin Slmirlnv. .,;nl.t phave stepped into the dictatorial shoes nau ue posse.s.M.'u mo jjooa sense to nave helped the Democrats of the territory upon this, the only occasion he ever had; but he dared say nothing upon tho for feiture issue, the only one worth a cent to the territorial Democrats in their fight. So ho will not bo consulted. It will break up tho combinations, but it will be fun for the boys on the outside. Those who think this is not a truo statement of the caso will bo woefully left when it comes to tho new deal in offices. Vancouveb. Burfrlcii's Arnica Salve.
