ASTORIA, OREGON:
TUESDAY NOVEMBER 52 JB84
A RAILROAD TO ASTORIA.
Thk probability of the forfeiture of
the Astoria land grant is not very flat
tering, and until that grant is for
feited it is not in the limits of proba
bility that a railroad will be built
over the route in contest. There is
some talk of building a road down the
coast, The idea is a feasible one
and may yet result in practical en
deavor. There are many who think that
few the intervening miles between
here and the point opposite Kalama
could with profit be covered by rails
that would put Astoria in railroad
communication with the country.
Certain it is that ihe arguments in
favor of building the few miles of
river bank road are most cogent.
The question is one that involves
action on the part of the Northern
Pacific R. K. Co., and the O. K. & N.
Co. It is not to the interest of the
O. R & N. Co. to build a road to As
toria down the bank of the Columbia
that would tie up their already lan
guishing river fleet; rather would
they make some concession and re
tard any more looking to such con
struction, for the day that sees that
or similar road built closes for them
a lucrative traffic.
It were manifestly to the interest
of the Northern Pacific to build the
road. Astoria is now a shipping
point of no small proportions and the
yearly growth of our city in this re
spect is abundantly proved by com
mercial statistics. The seaside travel
alone would be a strong reason for
means more satisfactory than the
present. To the objection that the
interests of the company at Tacoma
would be injured, it is not necessary
to cite the fact that the building of
the road from the present terminus
to Astoria would greatly increase the
travel Sonndward over that portion
of the line now built between Port
land and Kalama. That the O. R. &
N. Co., and the Oregon Short Line
will work together is manifest; that
the N. P. R. R. will need another out
let is none the less so. The trade of
Astoria will be the attraction that will
ultimately bring that line to our
doors.
lii this regard comes the query:
What is it worth to Astoria to hasten
the "ultimate"? As a matter of busi
ness would it be well to offer sub
stantial inducement, or "let nature
take its course?"
"Does any other work grow so
tiresome as writing?' asks Ida M.
Harper in the Terre Haute Mail.
"The article which must be furnished
every day, or every week, becomes a
veritable old mau of the sea, forever
clinging about your neck.' Which
proves, Ida, that you know very little
about it Writing, like any other
work, should be performed for love
or duty. If the first flavors it, happy
is the laborer; if the latter only,
proud should he b? to be able to per
form. We have come to the conclu
sion that these people who forever
bemoan the state of life that gives
them the same duty to perform, are
lazy. Their stimulus to action, evi
dently, is variety, and whoever makes
this the motive power of his doing
confesses to lack of ballast. To the
right-minded it is a grand triumph
to bo able to discharge each day's
duty. What matters it to such that the
tools of to-day are those that were used
yesterday? But. after all, the Harper
syllogism is error, for the major
premise is untrue. The writer has
not the same duty each day. Every
morning opens to him new vistas.
The world's topics are over varying
in form and oolor. Yesterday is for
ever dead in the light of to-day.
This day is new. and the thought of
this hour is its child. Iu truth,
writing is a vocation in every essen
tial the opposite of the treadmill.
When it grows tiresome to him, the
writer has ceased to be a lover of his
art, and the sooner divorcement the
better. There is no class of people,
we are ready to admit, that so per
sistently complain of the so-called
"everyday grind" as writers on the
press. But it is also true that this
same class has less belief in the gen
uineness of the complaint than any
other peoplo in the world. It is a
case of tears shed to win the luxury
of compassion.
The tail is trying to wag the dog.
The mugwumps of New York have
sent an impudent address to President-elect
Cleveland, telling him that
if he doesn't consult them in the mat
ter of appointments that they will go
back on him.
It is reported that the Chinese
government has offered Franco 75.
000,000 francs in settlement of the
claims. France demands 1,250,000.
000 francs.
The Oregon Democratic Journal
argues in favor of having a direct
vote for president instead of the pres
ent bystcm of electing electors who
elect the president The Journal is
presumably Democratic, but in this
arguing it goes directly 'ferninst''
the most cherished of all Democratic
doctrines the indestructible sover
eignty of the states. It was to insure
the-equal right of all the states to a
hearing that caused ihe framers of
the constitution to create the meth
od in use since the days of Washing
ton. There are, 'tis true, arguments
in favor of direct election, but the
main objection to changing the sys
tem has always been that it would be
un-Democratic and tending toward
centralization. Were the president
elected "by the direct vote of the
people, such a state as New York
would have more to say in the matter
than any half dozen commonwealths.
It has been seen that that state can
give 200,000 majority. That would
swamp the majorities of this entire
coast, and half the rest of the north
ern states. 'Twas to give each little
commonwealth equal voice and pro
portional share in the matter that the
present system was called into ex
istence, and if our Dalles contempo
rary is what its name implies it will
find some difficulty in reconciling its
utterance with real Democratic doctrine.
Quebec specials say: Lake Mis
tassinni is undoubtedly larger than
lake Superior, but its dimensions are
not even known to Hudson bay agents
and Indians. The only thing certain
ly known about it is that it is an ex
pansion of Rupert's river, just as
our great western lakes are expan
sions of the St Lawrence. The Hnd
son Bay company have had an agency
there upwards of 100 years, but kept
it secret that a lake of such dimen
sions existed. Trade is carried on at
the post of the Hudson Bay company
by giving Indians provisions and out
fits in exchange for skins and fnrs.
Temperance is a splendid thing,
but it needs practicing. "Be temper
ate in all things" wrote the apostle.
A man may eat too much, or drink
too much, or work too much, or talk
too much or keep still too much.
The prohibitionists were very intem
perate in the lato campaign; if the
biggest toper in the country were, to
be half so intemperate as the prohi
bitionists were during the fourth day
of this prosent month, he would need
till the day of judgment to sober up.
For downright intemperance the pro
hibitionists rival Maud S.
There is some talk in Pennsyl
vania of electingBlaine to the United
States Senate from that state. Now
if Conkling should be returned to the
senate from New York, "the Ameri
can House of Lords" would oft be
the scene of considerable political in
terest for six years.
Thirty-five thousand dollars is
said to have been St John's prico in
the recent campaign. He hasn'nt
collected it all yet.
