Tho following, from the San Fran cisco J'ost, is as applicable to tho state of Oregon as to Califernia: !No doubt but tho cry will soon bo raised in the land by those out in tho cold, that their efforts are not duly aprreciated. Tho South has gained a victory at last, and the northern Democrat is just fool enough to suppose ho is go ing lo havo his sbare in the division of the loot. In that he is very much mistaken. Tho New York Democrat may get something, the balance noth neth ing: the California Democrat less tbau nothing. He will not be recognized in anyway, lio will not even have a representative in "Wash ington to ask for nnything; and if he had he would be met with the answer: "What have you dono for the party? "Who have you elected?" The south is the Democratic party. Tt represents 153 votes out of the 219 that Cleveland will have. The northern mud sill may stand afar off and look on, but he shall not put hi3 nose in the trough. California, more than, any other state, will feel tbo chill of neglect From Kentucky there will come a man as collector of port, nnd his emrlo es will be imj ort ed. The collector of internal revenue may be a gentleman from North Car oHna, and the railroads will be en riched by the fares of the memlers of his staff, who will come from tho sunny south. The superintendent of the mint will como from Alabama and bring his retinue with him. The assistant treasurer will come from Tennessee. The United States surveyor general will arrive from Mississippi, and behind him will march his clerks nnd his draftsmen. In fact, tho inspectors of every thing, the collectors of every thing, and every one of the great army of federal officeholders will come from tho land of airs and alliga tors. Eejoice, ye Democrats of Cali fornia! rejoico early and while there is an opportunity, for a wet and chil ly blanket is being prepared for you in the south. The south has tri umphed, and with the assistance of the Enalish dudes, the depraved pas tor of Plymouth church, the hireling Schtirz, and the unforgiving Nemesis of politics Conkling. Tho Scrub Heroine. She came up the road just as tho snn sank over the hills. A poor old scrub cow. There was not a single line of beauty from her head to her tail. JJer joints and bones stuck out in great bunches. She was large where she should have been small, and small wheie she should havo been large. There was no gilt-edged pedigree hanging over her. No royal blood running in her veins. Her an cestors for a dozen generations had been scrubs, and she was surely tho scrubbiest or the lot Dogs barked at her, negro boys threw sticks at her, tho Jersey heifer at tho con er turned up her nose in scorn, aud yet the old scrub marched patiently "on through the mud to the home gate. She had been ont all day trying to manufacture the family supply of milk from hitler weed, chips ttnd mud. She reached her head over the fence and called patiently for the milker. And the milker appeared on the scene. Was it the soft and gentle milkmaid with immaculhte dress and slippers, with a ribbon in her hair and a smile on her lips? Did she pet the old cow aud call her "good Bess.' and give her something to eat while sho milked? Not to any extent A great brute of a man came down to the gale. He kicked the cow as she ran in past him. He milked her with great cruel pulls and jerks. Once when she stepped to startle the flies away from her he got up and kicked her. "When he had milked her, evi dently thinking that some return was in oider, he secured a club and clubbed her ont of the yard. "What did the old scrub do? Run away and como back? If there is any human being who would have gone baok he is unworthy of his race. The old cow walked patiently down the street to hunt about her feed, and return in the morning to meet exactly the same reception. The world can hardly show trno devotion. "Wo sing the praises of the world's heroes and heroines. Their names will live long in song aud story. Good. But when all others have been praised let ns not forget o take off our hats to the "scrub heroine" the old cow. Br.
