A PERCEPTIBLE IiEASON.
A correspondent of the New York
Bun says that the only question is
where the future great city of our
Pacific region is to be. Portland has
grown within the last twenty years
from a city of 8,000 to one of 40,000,
and as it is accessible by the largest
sea-going vessels, and as the general
government is improving the channel
through the bar at the mouth of the
Columbia, there is no perceptible rea
son why Portland should not maintain
its lead and ultimately become a rival
to San Francisco itself.
The above from the New York
Maritime Register, has been approv
ingly quoted by various journals un
accompanied by any comment bearing
on the true facts of the case. While
it is right and proper that Portland
Bhould have a good word spoken for
her, and perfectly natural that her
journals should copy those good
words and point to them as favorable
opinions, yet it is equally right and
proper that the exact truth be stated.
In the paragraph that heads this
article it says, "as it is accessible by
the largest sea-going vessels." But
it isn't. The statement is made as a
conceded fact, as an established prem
ise on which to base an argument
and draw a correct conclusion there
from. In all candor,we ask the Port
land journals can they give editorial
endorsement to that statement? Is
it not a fact that Portland is not "ac
cessible by the largest sea-goiBg ves
sels," and that its disadvantage
mis respect is one or tne prime
causes of the high rates of freight
from the Columbia river to the United
Kingdom?
Turn to the list of "Vessels on the
"Way" on the fourth page of this
paper, and note the number of insig
nificant barks, from 500 to 1000 tons
burden, that are coming here from
South America. Does, that list speak
well for the Columbia river? Is it
not reasonable to suppose that if
Tessels of 1,600 and 1,800 tonB burden
could come here and load to
their full capacity that freights would
be far cheaper than they are? Is it
not a matter of notoriety that
these little vessels heading this way
will be subject to inconvenience and
vexatious and expensive delay in try
ing to go past Astoria to and from
this port that "is accessible by the
largest seagoing vessels?"
This is not written in any spirit of
antagonism to our friends in the in
terior; Astoria is always glad to know
of Portland's prosperity, for our in
terests in this state are so bound
together that what affects one affects
alL Portland cannot make $1,000
without Astoria making $10 of it,
and vice versa, but it is evident that
the statement in the above extract is
in direct opposition to the facts.
Reference is also made to the im
provement going on at the mouth of
the Columbia tending to make Port
land a rival to San Francisco.
Whenever the great commercial
oities of New York and San Francis
co are mentioned a few geographical
faots always obtrude themselves on
the mind. Above New York, a little
more than the distance from Astoria
to Portland, lies the beautiful inland
city of Albany; its size and relative
importance when compared with the
ciiy at the mouth of the Hudson is
not strikingly in favor of the capital
city. Above San Francisco. a little
less than the distance between Astoria
and Portland is the important inland
city of Sacramento. Comparison
however between that pleasant city
and the commercial metropolis that
lies nearer the sea would result un
favorably to the former. Geography
is, at times, an instructive science.
Owing to the faot that congress
convenes on the day heretofore an
nounced for the opening of the
World's Industrial and Cotton Cen
tennial Exposition at New Orleans,
the inauguration ceremonies have
been postponed until December 16th.
Arrangements have been perfected by
which President Diaz and the Mex
ican congress, the presidents of the
Central American republics and the
United States, together with the ex
ecutive officers, foreign represent
atives and the members of both
houses of congress, will be present
on the opening day. Additional ex
hibiting space, measuring 700,000
square feet, has been provided by the
management, and applications will
be received until November 25. Ex
'hiHitors are given until December 10
to place their goods in the positions
assigned. "President Arthur, who has
given the enterprise his most zealous
support, will inaugurate the expo
sition. GebiAK social Democrats have is
sued a manifesto in Berlin, announc
ing a programme of fierce opposition
4o Bismarck. Their first move in the
mebstag will be.for abolition of the
Jmitlktilftw. .
The latest member of the fleet of
racers which are trying to reduce the
time between New York and Queens
town to five days, is the Umbria of
the Cunard line. It is not so long
ago that twenty days between the
two ports was considered fair time,
but now a week is considered poor
time for any of the crack boats of the
Cunard, Inman, Anchor or White
Star Line, while even the National
Line, which used to bo noted for its
slow boats, has gone in for building
racers. The new Umbria, just arriv
ed at New York, is 520 feet long, 57
feet broad, 41 feet deep, with five
decks and a tonnage of 8,000 tons.
The dining room is 50 feet wide and
76 feet long, and the vessel will ac
commodate 720 first-class passengers.
Her horse power is 12,500 and her
engine is about twice the size of
the great "Corliss engine shown at
the Centennial Exhibition. She
has seventy-two furnaces which heat
nine boilers, and twenty-eight men
are employed night and day in shov
eling in the coaL The owners will
be much disappointed if she does not
make the trip across in six days.
Then a man can leave the United
States on Monday morning and go to
church in London the following
Sunday.
Thebk is nothing mealy-mouthed
about the Portland Standard. In
yesterday's issue it says: "To the
victors belong the spoils," is as good
solid Democratic doctrine now as it
was in the days of Andrew Jackson
and Gov. Marcy. who first enunciated
it, and the Democrats would be fools,
worse than idiots, if they would per
mit the Republicans to hold on to the
offices which by right belong to the
Democratic party, and in which the
people bave declared they want a
change."
Mike De Young, proprietor of the
San Francisco Chronicle, was shot at
three times in his office last Wednes
day evening by Adolph Spreckle3, son
of Claus Spreckles the "sugar king."
Articles in the Chronicle regarding
Spreckles transactions are the al
leged cause. De Young had a nar
row escape from death.
