The Astouian guarantees to its ad vertisers the largest circulation of anv newspaper published on the Columbia river. To-night. Olympic social. Game of all kinds is plenty. Coal oil and gas bills grow as the days shorten. Building goes on all over the city, with uninterrupted activity. The Queen of the Pacific and C. S. Bc ment crossed out j-osterday. Interior papers are discussing tho re peal of tho mortgage tax law. Sun rises eight minutes past seven; sun set3 twenty-four minutes past four. The steamer Wildicood has gone from Shoahvater bay to Seattle to arrange a Sound route. P. "W. Hardenberg, who died suddenly in Portland last Monday, loaves ?150,000 worth of property to relatives in the east. Next in order is the venerable joke con cerning Thanksgiving turkoy, and then the turkey himself or herself as the case may be. The defeat of Blaine is cited as another instance of the apparent law that no United States senator can be elected president. Arrangements, legal and mechanical have been made, that will admit of launching tho Aberdeen at high tide this afternoon. The Yazoo, Miss., Herald of tho 7th inst. is to hand, with election returns from Yazoo. Yazoo City cast 1,330 votes, as follews: Cleveland, 1,324; Blaine, C. "George Baring' is tho name signed on the forged check passed on Emanuel in his clothing store last Sunday. It is thought that the rascal got away to San Francisco. Capt. Gage, well known as master of the roasting steamer Bcda. has been ap pointed to the command of tho Al Ki, which is to run hereafter on the northern coast route. Again comes flying a little bird with tidings that the Astoria railroad is being talked of. London and San Francisco is where the money is to como from, and from New York come the men. Wo would suggest as new headlines to replace "Births," "Marriages," "Deaths," "Arrivals," 'Refresnments," "Depart ures." ,Somcm7'e Journal. How would this de: "yells," "Bells," "Knellsr" The Olympic gymnasium clul will hpve a social at their rooms this evening. Numerous invitations have been issued and the event is looked forward to by many with pleasing anticipations. The subscribers to both of Jos. Cook's lectures will have tho opportunity of hearing them for 1.59, which is unusu ally low when the intellectual ability of the lecturer is taken into consid eration. Salmon shipments from Astoria over the N. P. R. R. eastward from April 1st to November 1st, are as follews: During April, 1,013 cases; May, 11J12; June, 11, 940; July. 18,."73; August, 41,410; Septem ber, 31,280; October, 25J18; total overland shipments for time specified, 142,117 case3. It is reported that there is an effort about to bo made by certain interested parties to have tho land office moved from Oregon City to Astoria, it being claimed that so littlo public land remains to bo taken up in that vicinity, and so much in Columbia, Clatsop and Tilla mook that the change would be a justifi able one. An item appeared in The Astobias last Tuesday relative to the manufacture of salmon "cans the coming season in which tho statement was mado that steel would probably be employed. It is now learned that the Pacific can com pany will shortly begin making cans of steel, and so that dreadful duty on tin may not bo such a bugbear after all. C. E. Van Horn, advance agent for the Roso Eytingo dramatic troupe, received a telegram yesterday to cancel dates in this city, as that lady had been taken sudden ly ill in Salem. "The troupe will now play in Portland before appearing here; tick ets purchased for last evening's perform ance will bo good for her first appearance in this city, which will bo on Monday, December L, Mrs. Frieda Foard, wife of Martin Foard, of the firm of Foard & Stokes, died yesterday in San Francisco. The sad news of her death will be read with sincere regret by her many friends and acquaintances in this city. Deceased was in the 2Gth year of her age. For some time she had been ailing, and on the 3rd of last month, in company with her husband, she went to San Francisco in quest of relief. Her sister, Miss Hil debrand, was with her at tho time of her death, and her other sister, Mrs. Brach, sailed for San Francisco on the Queen yesterday, too late to see her beloved sister in life. President Elijah Smith of the Oregon and Transcontinental company expresses great confidence in thG success of the scheme for paying tho 8,000,000 loan on its maturity at tho close of tho year. Some of tho large stockholders in New York, have signified their willingne33 to take their share of tho new loans. Boston holders of maturity notes to the extent of 250,003, have asked to bo al lowed to take the liko amount of new notes if tho shareholders should not sub scribe for the whole amount. Smith thinks that it is too early after the mail ing of the circular letters to expect re plies from most of tho stockholders. Thero is one federal officer whoso ten ure will be fully as secure under Cleve land as under Blaine. This is Bell, of Iowa, supervising architect of the treas ury. During his brief incumbency Bell has made himself unpopular with the owners of the granite mines in Maine and Vermont. The grievance against Bell "was his refusal to purchase granite of them to be used in the construction of public buildings. It is claimed that these New England quarrymen believed that Bell should be among the first offi cials to be removed after March 4th, and that another gentleman more favorable to their interest shonld be appointed in his stead. In furtherance of this plan the granite miners subscribed liberally to aid in carrying Maine for the Repub lican party in September. vr. b. c. A. Those interested in the Woman's Re lief Corps Auxiliary to tho G. A. R., saya the Salem Statesman, will be pleased to learn that a provisional department has been formed in tho state of Oregon. To present dnto thero are sixteen regularly formed departments ?nd threo provis ional, that of Oregon being tho latest or ganized, and in eight other states and territories the order ha, so far, flattering prospects. Tho officers of the provision al department are as follews: Mrs. Ida II. Babcock, president; ilrs. Agnes E. Dinniore, secretary; Mrs. Emma Craw ford, treasurer; Mrs. Clara Summers, of Portland, inspector; Mrs. Hattie Cooper, of Astoria. Mrs. Eliza Caukin of Portland and Mrs. T. Thompson, of Salem, assist ant inspectors. All correspondence re garding the object and aim of the order and of tho formation of Corps will be addressed to the secretary. Head quarters of this department will be at Salem. Just So. We are glad to see that Senator Dolph is forcing the investigation at Annapolis regarding the death of the Oregon cadet Strang. From t estimony at hand it looks very much as if the poor boy had been virtually murdered by a lot of hard hearted embryotic snobs, and wo hope, if our impression be correct, that it will be seen to that tho guilty ones are punished for it. If the stuff of which the future of ficers of the American navy is to be made is of tho cowardly stripe now manifesting itself at Annapolis it would bo better to do away with the academy at once and train our sailor dudes on ship board. No manly boy would take part in persecut ing a friendless stranger to death, and of no other breed should our naval cadets be composed. The people of Oregon, are justly indignant over the murder of their cadet; and tho fact that ho was almost bereft of relatives makes them all the more determined that the cruel persecu tors shall be brought to justice. Port land Welcome. Wants to Know Who Is the Ri;bt Uoncr. "Fashion" writes to Tim Astoeias as follews: "Please stale in case of a gen tleman and lady meeting on tho street, who bows first, the lady or the gentle man? and having once met is it necessa ry for him to bow should he meet the lady shortly afterward?" Should the lady and gentleman be acquainted, custom gives the lady the prefererence of recognition or non recog nition, as she may select. Should she recognize his bow he is the right bower evidently. Otherwise ho is as evidently the left bower. Cleveland's Cabinet. Secretary of State George William Curtis, of New York. Anthony, in an interview last Tuesday, said of Belva Lockwood's can didacy: "There's a scrap of inside his tory regarding that nomination that hasn't got into tho newspapers. It was represented that Mrs. Lockwood was nominated by tho Women's Equal Rights party. There is no such party in exist ence, one was nominated dv a iurs. Stow, of California. It was a little freak of Mrs. Stow's. She nominated Mrs. Lockwood for president and got her to accept, and then put herself on tho tick et for -vice president. She planned and managed tho Lockwood campaign. Mrs. Lockwood's candidacy, no matter who or what brought it about, served one pur pose it served to educate tho people up to the idea of women candidates for high places of public trust.' VTASHISGTOX LETTER. The Ken Ilonso A Six Tear Presidential j Term Demanded Election Betting , Sirs. Logan's Home j t I From our Regular Corresponden. Washington, Nov. 10, 1884. Tho new house will be composed of 182 Democrats and 112 Republicans, a gain to tho Republicans of 24 members. It is generally remarked that tho leaders in this present congress are mostly re-elected. Carlisle, Morrison, Randall, Cox, Springer, Townshend, Belmont, Reed and Daigly of Maine, Phelps, Bingham, uunm, nay no, Jiistucn, uuu ujouj uiuv j experienced men will be present in the next succeeding session. The policy of j tho free traders will likely bo modified, and it is verv doubtful whether Carlisle j will bo speaker another term. It is more than probable that Randall will regain the supremacy. Among tho more nota ble persons defeated at this election who are now representatives, are Eastou, of Connecticut, Horr, of Mich., Cannon, of III., Rosecrans, Hurd, Kellogg, and those two great "tail twisters" of thej British lion, Robinson and Finerty. The serious difficulty which attends a presidential campaign in the way of un settling business was never more appar ent than in the lato election. The Amer ican public seems peculiarly susceptible to sensations. The bitter contest just ended has been waged upon the assump tion that a change of administration might bring upon our devoted heads all the evils possible to a government. Tho ef fect has been to smother enterprise.unset t!e values, and to make tho people close fisted. The probability is that things would in any event move along about as usual, but tho public has been alarmed by the loud assertions of danger made by the politicians. The desire for a longer term for the presidency, and shorter campaigns, expressed by business men will be urged beforo congress with a view to making presidential elections at least six years apart. This will require a con stitutional amendment but it may be effected before another general election. One feature of the lato election which will receive comment, is the universality of betting. In England the great Derby raco gives all classes an opportunity to risk a littlo money, once a year, on a bet. In the United States every one bets on the presidential election. "Especially was tms tho case in Washington List week. Business was positively almost suspended during the long-continued doubt as to which of tho candidates stood first. Thero was so much money tied up on wagers that there was little currency left for circulation, and trade was at a stand still. The influx of visitors to tho national capital within a few days succeeding the election has been remarkable. The ho tels and boarding houses havo filled up rapidly, and the society people are here in force. The disposition to make Wash ington a winter society resort seems to be increasing. 3lany wealthy people now spend two or three months here ev ery winter, even though they claim no permanent residence, and no fixed busi ness here. They como for tho excite ment, for society, and to bo chronicled among distinguished people at tho cap ital. Tho tide of people which rushes tow ards Florida and tho south as cold weather sets in usually go by way of this city, and generally stay here a week or two, going and coming. These worship era of the sun, or warm weather, are ar riving now in considerable numbers. In addition to the fashionable people, it is noticeable that tho literary guild are also coming to Washington for the season. I refer especially to tho writers of fiction, many of whom are now located for the winter. I passed by the residence of Mrs. Gen. Logan a few days ago. General and Mrs. Logan have usually boarded at a fash ionable boarding house, but this winter they will keep house in an old-fashioned, homo-like mansion on Capitol hill. The acquaintances of this couple aro perhaps tis numerous as those of any one in pub lic nit;, xucii uu-)iuiiuij' j- Kiut&i., uiiu Mrs. Logan stands second to none in point of social popularity. They will not entertain in the fashionable sense of the word, but their home will bo one of the centers of sociability and political influ ence this winter. Lexnox.
