When, in the 2arly inorninp, the day's affairs press ipon one's attention beforehand, and -here comes the wonder how in the world everything is to bo accom plishedwhen every interruption is received impatiently and the clock is watched in distress as its moments flit past then tho mind tires the oody. We are wrong to drive our selves with whip and spur in this way. Each of ns is promised strength for the day, and we must not wear ourselves out. If only wo can keep cool and calm we shall be less wearied when we have reached the eventide. Tho children may be fractious, the servants trying, tho friend we love may fail to visit us, the letter we ex pect may not arrive; but if wo can preserve our tranquility of soul and demeanorwe shall get through every thing creditably. OUR IKMBHITIE3. It is often easier to bear with the infirmities of strangers than with those of friends and kindred. Too often the sharpest words which we utter those which sting the most keenly and cause the most bitter re pentanceare addressed to those whom we love best. Tho sad -fact ought to bo appreciated, however, so that every one of us may be on our guard. In nothing is tho spirit of Christ seen more plainly than in tho little acts and the unstudied words of home life, and no other victory over self is greater than when we bring ourselves to neither speak nor make retort to tho unkind words which so often spring to the lip in the domestic circle. SILENT SUrrXRIKG. Silent suffering is a thing often un known to the world; for there is much pain that is quite noiseless and vibrations that make human agonies are often mere whispers in the roar of hurrying existence. There are glacnes of hatred that stab and raise no cry of murder: robuene3 that leave man aud woman forever beir gared of peace and joy, but that are kept secret by the sufferer commit ted to nosounds, except of low moans m iuu uigui seen in no writing ex cept that made on tho face by the slow months of suppressed anguish and early morning tears. Many an inherited sorrow that has marred a life has beeu breathed into no human ear. life's discipline. It is not tho best things that is, the things wo call best that make men. It is not pleasant things; it is not tho calm experience of life. It is life's rugged experiences, its tempests, its trials,. Tho discipline of life is hero good and there evil, hero troub le and there joy, here roughness and there smoothness, ono working with the otheri and the alterations of the one and the other which necessitate adaptations constitute a part of that education which makes a man a man in distinction from an animal, which has no education. The successful man invariably bears on his brow the marks of the struggles which ho had to undergo. PBIDE. Pride is baso from tho necessary foolishness of it, because it cannot but imply that our oyea look down ward only; for there is not the man so lofty in his standing or capacity, but ho must be humble in thinking of the cloud habitation and far sight of the angelic intelligences above him, and perceiving what infinity there is of things ho cannot know nor even reach unto. noiiE. Most Americans do not have homes; they have merely places to stay, where the father can read his news paper, the mother ply the sewing maenme, ana tuo cniidren make mo lasses candy, or have annual birth day parties. But the idea of heart center, where love is cherished, thoughts are fostered, and morals expanded, is apparently unheard of in tneir pnnosopny. juatoriamihas goes to church on Sunday without an idea that she is leaving tho holi est temple behind her, of which she is high priestess, and if you should dissect her brain you would find that in the corner devoted to "necessities" the strata of clothes, cooks, sewing gins ana roasr turkey nil up all but the smallest crevice conscientiously set aside for religious beb!ef and church membership. Chicago, Nov. 18. Tho following interview with D". S. Clarkson, mem ber of the national Republican com mittee, was published in tho Daily JSrews to-day: "The dinner at Doi monico's lost votes for Blaine, but the national committee was not re sponsible for that. Field issued an invitation, and Blaine accepted it. Then came Burchard with his miser able alliteration, that cost Blaine 10, 000 votes. Tho whole thing was de liberately planned by Burchard's three sons, who supported Cleveland The speech must have been prepared in advance. No man thinks of allit erations when making extemporane ous remarKs. xsurcnard was there, but it was not intended that lie should speak, but some one thrust him forward, as tho oldest preacher in .New lorK, ana then ne spoke his piece. Another thing that injured us," -continued Clarkson. "was Ar thur's indifference. He certainly did not exert himself in tho campaign, nor did his warm friends. Had the New York postoffico been closed on election day, 1,800 carriers could havo voted, and tho state would have thus been saved for Blaine." "How do you account for the large independent desertion?" "The independent Bepublicans did not snpport Cleveland on account of opposition to Blamo. It wa3 solely on account of their free trade ideas. When George William Curtis left uuicago, aiier me convention ne no doubt mtended to snpport Blaine. I was in tho caucus with him to dis cuss the question of nominating a candidate for vice president Before we voted he left the room, beoause he said he did not wish to be bound by the caucus, but he said nothing about oppuaiuy xiuiue. J.6 was not until ne got back to New York, and found that the proprietors of his paper had ueiurmiueu io-go uguiust xiame, on account oi ireo rraue, tnat no con cluded to oppose him." BLAXXB'b FUTURE. "What will Blaine's future be? Will he run for congress, as has been suggested ."' "Ne: he will devote himself to his literary work, as he desired to do be fore th? oonvefihonr He 'did- not want to be tho candidate for president tins year. ' "Will Conkling be made senator?" "Arthur may be, but not Conkling. Arthur hopes that, through Blaine's defeat, ho may come forward in 1838, but that hope will not be realized." "What do you hear of Cleveland's policy?'' 'T spent fonr days in Virginia after election. Three-fourths of the Dem ocrats there expect to bo reimbursed for their loss during the war. The south compose four-fifths of the Democratic party, and according to the ordinary rules of arithmetic four-fifths can control one-fifth. Tho south will control tho caucuses of the party, and shapo its policy. When was there a Democrat who was not controlled by tho south? Now, here aro these independents. They claim to be Bepublicans, but aro now demanding representation in Cleveland's cabinet." "Do you think that 30,000 inde pendents, or 5,000,000 Democrats will control Cleveland?" "His administration will be dicta ted by the south." New York, November 14. The New York Tribune says: About 25,000 (nearly all Bopublican) votes were cast for St. John in this state. The Bepublicans. however, gained from other quarters about 3,000 more votes over Garfield's vote than they lost by the diversion to St. John, or by the transfer of the bolting free-traders to Cleveland. In New Jersey the vote for Blainois 2,800 more than the vote cast for Garfield, yet there were about 6,000 votes diverted to the pro hibition ticket Assuming that 5,000 former Bepublicans voted for Cleve land, as tho bolters claimed, tho Be publicans mnst have gained nearly 14,000 votes from former Democrats, or from new voters. A similar state of facts appears in other northern states. The Bepnblican party ha3 gamed more votes than it has lost The Stream of Life. The blood cannot be pure unless the liver acts rightly. Nor can it bo rich unless it has enongh iron in it. The iron in Brown's Trnn "Ritlers is exactly what is needed to give the blood proper vigor and purity. This splendid tonic acts on the liver and sets me whole digestive machinery to rights. It brings to the blood tho iron which gives the tiny coipuscles their rich red color. Don't let your blood get thin and watery, thus invit ing disease. A fashion paper says: "Tho new underskirt pretends to be full when it is not."
