I THE PRESIDENT ELECT. How Grorer Cleveland Carries His New Honors. New Yobk, Nov. 16. The Hurts special from Albany says: President elect Clevelaud manifested no more active interest in the result of the official canvass to-day than during any of the days it has been in prog ress. He occasionally asked his pri vate secretary how the count in New York was progressing, but such in quiries were rather incidental than otherwise, and on being assured the governor lapsed into his customary state of apparent indiflerence. It is certain that the governor, all through the "exciting campaign, re mained steadfast in the conviction that ho was to bo successful. It is reported that just before the election, when asked by an intimate friend upon what he based his conviction, ho replied: "Ob, I don't know; but it's just my luck." That seems to correctly express it For some reason the number of visitors at the executive chamber since the election has been remarka bly small, It is true there has been no lack of sight-seers, who Lave lit erally taken possession of the cham ber, gazed in wonder at the magnifi cent carved oak ceiling, fingered the pictures and even fondled articles on the governor's desk, but there have been no notables. TUBEATS AXD PETITION& The governor's mail, however, has been simply enormous. During the campaign it was large, but has in creased four-fold since the election. Several clerks have been constantly employed in opening, assorting and answering letters. While many of the missives are couched in congrat ulatory tenn3, others are those of warning, and others still are dire threats. Several writers solemnly swear that Cleveland shall not live to see another fortnight; others warn him to beware of plots against his life, and advise bim to ride instead of walk to the capitol, and have at least four guards at the entrauco to the executive chamber. Probably Cleveland has seen none of these missives, but if he has it is safe to say they do not worry him to any great extent He is in splendid health, and seems to be at peace with himself and the world. Not even the trying ordeal of the past two weeks has in the least disturbed his se renity. A very large number of letters con tain applications for office, the posi tions desired ranging from county postmasterships to cabinet positions. Several thousand of these have al ready been filed. The gifts that have been received by the governor in the last four months would go far toward stocking a country store, and are almost infi nite ih variety. CLEVELAND BECOMES AXNOYED. New Yobk, Nov. 17. The Herald's Washington special says: The Cap ital to-day prints an interview with Governor Cleveland, held by the pro prietor of the paper, in which ho says ho remarked to the governor that his election had been followed bv some thing like a panic among the minor employes of the government at Wash ington. The governor replied brisk ly: "I think I have said enough on that subject It is in my letter, if it is not in the platform. There is no use in trying to beat brains into peo ple's heads. Let them attend to their business. Let them attend to their business," ho said, repeating his words in a very decided manner. Tho Lighthouse Service. Washington, Nov. 17. In tho an nual report of the lighthouse board. Esti mates for general appropriations next fiscal year, including supplies, repairs, salaries, expenses, light, ves sels, buoyage and flag signals, ets., are $2,lGi,000. Estimates for special appropriations amount to 31,261,550, mado up in part of tho following items: Angel island for signal, Cali fornia, $4,200; Cape Orford light sta tion, Oregon, $2,000; Destruction island light station, Washington ter ritory, $85,000; supply steamer, $150, 000; building for lighthouse board, $250,000. At the P.e pub lican national committee rooms yes terday aiternoon unairman Jones, 3Ir. lilkins, Secretary Fessenden, ex Senator Henderson of St Louis, and a number of politicians met and dis cussed the result of tho canvttss in the city and state. A telegraph op erator, with a small box relay resting on the table beforo him, connected the committee room with Mr. Blaine's private library at Augusta, and the gossip of the day was speedily trans mitted to the latter. The clicking of tho instrument was accompanied by varvinir smiles on tho face of the op erator, as he turned off page after page of pleasant retorts and sallies from tho Maine statesman. "Mr. Fesssenden has just come in." ielegraphed Mr. Elkins, as the secre tary carao in irom an aujoming apart ment "How do you do Samuel?" wrote the operator over the signature of ",J. G. B." "Never better," replied the secre tary, and then began a general talk with tho gentleman -in Augusta. a coiriimEE's opinion. "How does Mr. Blaine take things?" queried your correspondent, of a prominent member of the com mittee. "Like a duck takes to water," was tho reply. "His courage is insur mountable. He looks things right straight in the fade, and never flinches. I know something about Mr. Blaine. I served m congress with him, and saw- him go through the investigation o187G, which was the greatest even tan Mr. Blane's en tire career. No one in tho sound of .his voice dared to question his integrity "or doubt his innocence." -. .? , NoauoL-r 6p "pobitics. ' " "T do not think," said an .Augusta friend of Mr. Blaine's, ''that he will take it so much to heart as many think he will, because he is a trained politician, and is ready to accept the fortunes of war. Do I think he will retire from politics? No, I don't think he will. His splendid leader ship in the late canvass has given him a strong hold upon the affections of his party, and they will not permit him lo be relegated to private life. If there was a chance to-day to send him to the United states senate from Maine, I believe the Republicans of his state would put him there, but there is no opening until two years hence, when we will choose a success or to Senator Hale. In tho matter of powder making, Pennsylvania lead? all other states in the Union, with New York and Ohio competing for second placa Curi ously enough much more powder is burned in time of peace than in time of war. The average daily consump tion of powder in tho United States is 100 tons. In a battle in which 50.000 men fired forty rounds each, less than one-quarter of an ordinary day's quota of powder would bo used. In the construction of the Hoosac tunnel more powder was exploded than in the war of the rebellion, and a single large coal mine will use al most as much. The coal trade con sumes more powder than any other single interest A quantity is export ea, and tne rest is used in civil en gineering, in the manufacture of py rotechnics, for sporting and military purposes, and by the government in firing signals and salutes. It is said that the Asters alone own 3,600 houses in New York, all of stone and iron. Tho lowest rental they get is $1,500 per annum, and the highest about $50,000, which some of their enormous down town building? bring. In Chehalis county, W.
