The trial of J. Bottger yesterday, in Justice Goodell's court on a charge of selling liquor to John Hull, an alleged minor, resulted in a verdict of "not guilty" by the jury, Hull stating that he claimed to be over 21 years of age. Mr. H. B. Parker, who for the last nine years has so successfully conducted the Parker House has been obliged by reason of pressure of other business to lease his property to some one who can devote his whole time to its management. The closing exercises of the week of prayer will be held at Y. M. C. A. hall this afternoon at 2:45 o'clock. Half hour song and praise service from Moody and Sankey's Gospel hymns. She is loaded, has her crew, and is virtually ready for sea, but there is some hitch about her ability to get clearance papers, Mr.Laid law, who represents the San Francisco charterers, objecting. It is thought that an effort is being made to sell her cargo. Mrs. "Wallman has leased the new hotel recently erected by H. B. Parker, on the corner of Squemoqua and West Cth streets, and will conduct a general hotel business. This is a fine building in a good location, and under the experienced management of Mrs. "Wallman will cer tainly obtain its share of public patron age. It will be known as the Germania Hotel. Mr. J. H. Close has leased the Parker house and will hereafter have the entire management of that well known and pop ular hotel. He has had large experience, is well and favorably known, and brings with him in his new field the prestige of personal popularity. Astoria Democrats were not quite so previous as some of their brethren far ther oast who proceeded to exercise their vocal propensities while still surrounded by a boundless contiguity of shade, but when they did "turn loose", it was with a vim. Last night will long be remem bered in the political annals of Astoria, and some of the paraders when old, gray-hoaded grandsires will tell their sping ancestry of "the night we cele brated the election of Cleveland and Hendricks." All Democrats Who w isli to go to the grand Democrat ic demonstration in l'ortlaud on Wednesday, will meet at the club rooms of the Cleveland and Hendricks club, on Monday evening at 7 'JSO o'clock for the purpose of making arrange ments and mode of march. Music Torchlight Proccsiion IHnmlnatiOM Bonfires Cannon Hurrah In Honor of CleTrland and ntndricks. Astoria was lit up last night from one end to the other, on both sides and up and down the middle. The night was fine, tho dust was laid, everyone was on deck and tho entire programme was car ried out. Tho streets were brilliantly il luminated; many of the stores and numerous private residences were re splendent in rows of lights from first floor to garret. Considerable taste and inge nuity was displayed in the decorations, and Republicans and Democrats saw that the lower lights were kept burning. Shortly after dark the cannon on Fla vel'a wharf began to thunder out its hun dred booms and the echoes reverberated among the hills. At 7:15 the procession was formed at the headquarters of the Cleveland and Hendricks club, which was a blaze of light. The procession marched in force to Upper Town, where it was met by a largo delegation, and at half past eight the procession, now of great length, moved down Squemoqua street, up Cass and along the line of march. The Astona .crass .Band ana the Cushing Post G. A. R. Cornet Band played patriotic airs, sky rockets and Roman candles filled the air, red fire made radiant tho route, flags waved, men in the procession and on tho sidewalks cheered, and at nino o'clock tho proces sion reached the city hall. After countermarching on Squemoqua brief remarks were mado from the bal cony of 2's engine house by Messrs. Trenchard. Curtis. Cleveland and Hart The remarks were mostly congratulatory of the fact that during the course of the campaign whioh had resulted in a Demo cratic victory tho utmost good foeling and cordiality had prevailed on both sides. Hearty cheers were given for Cleveland, and at the apropos suggestion of one of the speakers three cheers were given for St. John. Good order and har mon3' characterized tho entire proceed ings and after depositing the torches at headquarters tho procession dispersed. POST MORTEM EXAMINXTIOX. New Yoek, Nov. 14. The World prints this morning the following special from Augusta. Maine: Emmons Blaine who is now in New York, had a long conversation with a lady here, just before he left, in which ho completely unbosomed himself as to the views his father takes of his defeat. This lady in turn tells the story tome, and I betray no confidence in giv ing the substance of it. According to Emmons Blaine, tho elder Blaine thinks he would have carried New York by a large majority, and been eleoted, if the election had taken place a week before it did. He now regrets, above all things, that he stopped in New York on his re turn from the west, for it was there, dur ing the last week of the campaign, that the two fatal blunders were committed, which would not have been committed if ho had been elsewhere. The first was the celebrated lapsus of Dr. Burchard, and the second the Delmonico dinner. "When Blaine heard that Gould was to be one of the givers of the Delmonico dinner he protested against going, not because of any personal dislike to Mr. Gould, but solely as a matter of expedience; but both William "Walter Phelps and "White law Reid said ho must go; that it would be worth 1,000 for every plate on tho table. Blaine rbsisted their appeals up to the last moment, but they finally pushed him into a carriage, and said there must be no refusal. He was at that famous feast as an unwilling guest, and now, since the disaster that followed, ho sees more plainly than ever that he was right. This is undoubtedly nn authentic version of the rupture that now exists be tween Blaine and Messrs. Phelps nnd Reid. Blaine's Sentiments. New Yobk, Nov. 14. An Augusta, Me., special gives a copy of a letter from Mr. Blaine to a distinguished New .York Democrat, who wroto to him, expressing the hope that he (Blaine) was making no attempt to influence the count of votes in New York. Blaine replied to-day by asking in what possible manner he could influence it, directly or indirectly, and then adds: In the whole controversy I have no desire except for a fair count and an honest declaration of tho result. The Republican national committee have acted on their judgment at every stop, and need no advice from me. I do not wish 'any political supporters of mine in New York to take the slightest advantage of mere technical defects in any returns where the honest intention of tho voter is expressed. I would far rather lose than gain by the exclusion of returns on mere technical grounds. Tho presi dency is not desirable if there be the re motest taint on the title. Promotion of that kind no more leads to honor than the possession of forged papers leads to wealth.' The Henry Tillard. Lokdon, Nov. i4. The American ship Henry Villard has arrived at Plymouth in a sinking condi tion having collided off Portland light to-day with the English ship Madgeburg. The latter sunk instantly and the crew, seven men, were drowned. The Villard belongs in Portland Oregon. - (Tho Villard was one of the three American built iron ships of which so much has been said, and was 1.533 tons register, bhewas chartered by bibson, Church fc Co., of Portland, to load flour for Queenstown at 39s and sailed June 8 last with 17,823 barrels valued at $141,- 7G5. The vessel was launched at Ches ter, Pa., in 1832, and brought a cargo of railroad material to the Oregon Improve ment Company of Portland, by whom the" vessel was owned.) News. "Warren have brought suit against School District No. One, I. E. Parker, C. H. Stockton, Louis Hart wig, "W. E. Dement, J. O. Bozorth and Wm. G. Ross, asking that defendants be enjoined from collecting sundry taxes now advertised as delinquent on certain property in this city, and paying bonds is sued in the name of the district. Plain tiffs allege in their .complaint that 'de fendant on April 30, 1883 and September 22, 1883, "did on or about said time. enter into a conspiracy anu cumuiuuuuu, uuu with the other and all together, with the intent and the avowed purpose to cheat and defraud these plaintiffs of their prop erty as aforesaid under color of law and right and of making money in their offi cial capacity as aforesaid for their pri vate use,' etc., etc. Complaint alleges further that the school directors and school clerk did "issue, circulate, sell and dispose of certain pieces of paper called bonds" and that thev have in their capa city "falsely, fraudulently, without au thority, and in violation of Jaw, mane, executed, delivered, hawked, traded, bar gained away, swopped and disposed of for money, wares, goods and merchan dise, a great number of pieces of paper in words and figures in substance as fol lows." Here follows copies of the bonds issued last February. Further protest is mado against the action of the school meeting last July when tho tax for maintenance of tho school and for interest, otc, was levied. "Wherefore your orators pray that this honorable court order, adjudge and decree that said papers called bonds and coupons of school district No. 1, bo null and void, ultra vires, and of no force, valuo or effect whatever, and that said district and tho officers and directors thereof, be restrained and forever en joined from the payment of said bonds or any part thereof, or any interest thereon." ' C. H. Page, Dolph, Bellinger, Mallorv and Simon are attorneys for plaintiff. The complaint was filed yestordav in tho office of the county olerk. A Point for Columbia Salmon Canners. An English journal says: Tho employ ment of steel in the manufacture of tin- plate is rapidly increasing, owing to tho cheap rata at which steel can now be pro duced, and it is likely to lead to excellent results in a direction which was not con templated. Tho Amerioan canned and tinned meat trade has long been aware of tho dangers to health that are fre quently incurred by those who use this class of provisions, and is beginning to insist that tho tins should bo made of steel instead or iron as heretofore. It is considered probable that many tinned foods, and especially fish, which were formerly tainted, as it was thought from defective soldering, are really made in jurious to the the customer through the use of tho faulty iron in the cans. The can production has now assumed such gigantio proportions that the employ ment of mild steel in this direction will necessarily be on a large scale also.
