ra $fo a gioran. ASTORIA, OREGON: SATUJtD AY ....NOVEMBER 15. 16M EFFECT OF PAPER AND INK ON EYESIGHT. The colors of paper and ink, says a writer in the Scientific Monthly, are far more responsible for defective eye sight than cross-lights from opposite windows, light shining directly in the face, insufficient light, or small type. If these were remedied the principal cause of the mischief would still re main, the real root of the evil being the universally used black ink and white paper. These, says the writer in question, are ruining the eyesight of all the reading nations. He argues that the rays of the sun are reflected by a white body and absorbed by a black one, and that we print our newspapers and books in direct oppo sition to the plainest correct princi ples of optical science. A book or newspaper as now printed being read by us, the eyes do not see the letters, which, being black, are non-reflective; tke outlines of the impressions of the type reach the retina, but they are not received by the spontaneous, di rect aotion of that organ. The white surface of the paper is reflected, but the letters are detected only by a discriminative effort of the optic nerves. This constant labor irritates the nerves, and, when long continued, exhausts their susceptibility. As proofs, the writer cites the well known fact that the human eye cannot long sustain the glare of a white surface without injury. The sunlight reflect ed from fields of snow, unrelieved by the colors of other objects, or from the white sands of the desert, is, the world over, productive of ophthal mia. In accordance with this argument, if colored paper were substituted for white the eyes of all reading people would at once be relieved of a blind ing strain a continuous effort bound to result in permanent weakening of the eyes. Nature and science, says the writer above quoted, tell us that the color of all printing paper should be green. Green grass covers the ground, green leaves are on the trees and green is the color most grateful to the eye. Green newspapers would be a nov elty, but in time we would grow ac customed to the tint; green school books would please the children; but green grounds would sadly mar the high art engravings for which a num ber of Am erican magazines have be come noted. And, if our scientific friend is correct in his conclusions, green paper would sadly cripple the trade in eye-glasse3 and spectacles. A compani' in New Jersey is mak ing paper counterpanes and pillow shams. No. 1 Manila paper ia used, two large sheets being held together by small twine at intervals of three or four inches, gummed so as to stick the sheets together where the twine lies. The twine strengthens the pa per. The xnargin of the counterpane has a hem, in which is more of the twine to keep it from tearing. Beau tiful designs are printed on the up per s urf ace of the counterpane and pillow-shams, which make a very neat appearance. "When they become wrinkled they can be made smooth by hot flatirons. They retail at 75 cents a seL The counterpane can be left on the bed when it is occupied, if so desired and in cold weather it will be found a very neat and warm arti cle of bed clothing, since the paper will prevent the escape of heat as well as a woolen blanket A cubiotjs question of jurisdiction has risen in the case of the sunken British frigate Hussar, which is said to have gone down somewhere about 1780 in Long Island sound with $5, 000,000 of gold on board. Eecently the secretary of the treasury trans ferred the contract of raising the wreck from a New York man to a Providence firm, the government to receive all relics and 10 per cent of the money recovered and now it is claimed that the state of New York owns the alleged sunken treasure and that the national government has no right to meddle with it. Theee is some talkin New York of electing Eoscoe Conkling to the United States senate. The Demo cratic papers think that If enough Bepuhlicans could be found in the legislature to vote for him that ihe matter could be arranged. Blaike has been almost as busy this summer and fall as a newspaper man. He has written, traveled and talked a good deaL About 250,000 copies of his book have been sold and as soon as he gets a -little rested he will write some more. Cxnus SW. Field says that the reverend Burchard's reward about "Bun Komanism and Bebellion" cost Blaine 50,000 votes in New York. Ababi.Pabha, talking of the false prophet, says: "The campaign of the Mahdi must necessarily end in a re verse." Arabi has evidently heard from tho lato presidential election. A Republican Senate, a Democratic House of Representatives : the tariff where it was and that's the most im portant result of tho November elec tion.
