It is said that gold and silver mines changed hands over the result of the Owens-Murphv prize fight at Butte city. Strawberries, the second crop grown this season in an open field near Winona, Minn., are on sale in that city at ono dollar a quart. Members of the Boston police force have been forbidden to take fruit and peanuts from street-stands without paying therefor in cash. It has been proposed to furnish the railroads vith grain cars built entirely of steeL It is said that more grain can be cirried with less wear and tear. There is great excitement in Buffa lo and Fort Erie over tho squabbles of two rival ferry companies, one of which holds a license from the Amer ican side, the other from the Cana dian. A suit for damages, it is said, is now pending against the jailer of a Leadville jail by a woman who was nearly frightened to death by being put into a "haunted cell," in which prisoners whom it is desired to es pecially punish are confined. The value of the cocoanut as food is as yet but little understood. An instance of its use is found in the ex perience of two shipwrecked sailors. They were seven years on an island, whero their only food was cocoanuts and an occasional flying-fish.
