New YobKjNov. 1L A special from Augusta, Maine, saVs: Blaine, for the last three days, has been flooded -with telegrams from all parts of the -north and west, expressing the fullest belief that he is elected, and assuring him that his friends and supporters will stand by him to the last in the asser tion and maintenance of his right?, as they may be established by law. Many of the "western dispatches ex press the hottest indignation at the declaration of the Albany Argus, that the men who attempt to install Blaine in the presidency will be killed, and that the legal consequences of the killing will bo taken care ot after ward. This is from a paper published by Manning, and its meaning is un derstood to be that Cleveland's par don would bo ready for such offenses. This is the "way it is interpreted "by ono of .Blames telegrams from Chi cago. Mr. Blaine has also received many distinct and significant telegrams from men "who were confederate sol diers, expressing the greatest fear that disorder may become chronic m the south, if the Democrats are en trusted with the national administra tion. Negroes are in fright through out the south at the bare prospect These telegrams say that race trou bles on a large scale are feared by many of the bravest men in the south. One telegram from Virginia says: "We are appalled at the consequences which might follow from a sense of insecurity and consequent panic on the part of the negroes." A small class of the telegrams are themost curious of all. They come from men who express regret that they voted against Blaine. One man in New York says he woke up to Ihe reality when he saw the class of men who immediately flocked to the front at the prospect of possible Demo cratic victory. Another from Massa chusetts says he believes a large number of the so-called independents would reverse their votes if they could have an opportunity. The to tal number of telegrams is astonish ing, and indicates that an extraordi nary interest is taken in the situation in New York. " Many express a belief thatChairman Barnum s proclamation is practically a confession of defeat, and was aloudboast, merely to keep up the courage of those who. by unlaw ful methods, are determined, if possi ble, to accomplish a false count and fraudulent victory at Albany. New Yobk, Nov. 11. The Mail and Express says: "The official count of the ballot in every county in the state is now in progress. The work will be very thorough. Neither party yields an inch. Every figure will be closely scrutinized in all the counties of the state. A week is usually consumed in this city, and in Kings county less time is required. Four years ago the official canvass cf the state was not completed until November 20, over a week distant. Prominent lawyers on both sides will watch the count In South Siberia there is an un civilized race known as Bourats who worship a human god. "When their god reaohes the age of 19 they poison him, and choose a younger god, who is likewise poisoned when he reaches that age. There is not nrach com petition among the youth of South Siberia in seeking the nomination for human god. They don't put their cards in the newspapers a couple ot months before the convention meets, offering themselves as a candidate for the office, subject to the rules of the Bourats. Although the office is a sinecure, the youth prefers to work sixteen hours a day in a woolen mUL The experience of the Canadian ex ploring vessel Neptune, in the strait and Bay of Hudson, is not reassuring to those who have believed that Man itoba grain can be shipped to Europe by that route cheaper than through Canada or the United States. It en countered icebergs in August, and met with several ice-bound vessels. Says the Week: The fact must be acknowledged that there are years in which, during the best months of summer, this navigation is so difficult as to have little or no certain com mercial value. Oats are not a good crop to precede wheat, and to avoid the chances of loss of seed, some farmers after plow ing their oat ground let it lie until spring and sow spring grain. It is severe on the land, but strong, heavy soil will bear a good deal of cropping where it is fall plowed. "With liberal use of fertilizers, oats can be grown in succession indefinitely and bring good returns. The Glasgow Herald advises Amer icans to give up eating pie and hot cakes, and substitute oat meal por ridge for them. If they should do so, it thinks they would be a calmer, a less lively, a les3 speculative, a less DomDastio and a happier people. Three Cent's worth of Gold. Somebody who calls himself a sci entist has discovered that everv ton of sea-water contains three cent's worth of gold. The bother is how to get the gold out In order to get enough to buy a. bottle of Brown's Iron Bitters, he would have to sort over just thirty-three and one-third tonB of the briny fluid. By that time he would be so played out that the contents of at least one bottle would be necessary to restore him. But it is a great restorer, and cures com pleter dyspepsia, malaria, eta. The Connt in New York. New York, Nov. 11 Midnight Up to this hour the result ot the bal lot for presidential electors ha3 been declared in 33 ot5the 60 counties in this state. The last provious reports of the countv clerks showed a Dem ocratic plurality ot 1,280. To-day's canwiss shows a Jiet loss to Blaiue of four voles. The remaining 27 coun ties, with two exceptions, reported progress, aud will, for the most part, report the result of their canvass to morrow. To-day's reports Speak of irregularities in four. No mention was made of any serious discrepancy in any county. Several counties which did not to-day complete their official canvass .reported that there was no reason to believe, when com pleted, the figures would show any change from those already given. Canvassed returns received by the Democratic state committee from 24 counties indicate a change of 6 votes in favor of Blaine, against 60 in (Liv ingstone; in favor of Cleveland. No returns have been received by the Bepublican national committee at the Victoria hotel, and Chairman Draper, of the Republican state ex ecutive committee, could not be found. Gen. John N. Knapp, a stalwartBe- rablican from Auburn, said he be ieved the official canvass would make no material change in the published returns. "If there is any hitch," said he, "it will bo in New York and Kings counties. Up in tho country the peo ple know twenty-four hours after the closing of the polls what the result is. I think it is a sure thing."' Tho grinding of hemlock bark has become a considerable industry in the west," said a New York lager beer brewer. "It has been discovered that a fino beer can be made with its aid." It is asserted that the chief substances used in adulterating beer are tan bark and soda, with a little rice malt to give it body and hold the foam. Hemlock bark is being used instead of these articles. "Wliv in -wo jnlt hnltr? Trt nrr. serve it. No weed is a worse pest than wild carrot Poorness of soil makes it rather worse, for it will grow then in tough stalks that cannot be cut with the sharpest scythe, to prevent seed ing. The only remedy is to cultivate thoroughly one or two years, manure well and seed so heavily with clover that tho young weeds will be smoth ered. - - m m The good points of an ex: A broad, intelligent face, with head up; small neck and herns: length of bedy: straight back, heavy shoulders, with full brisket; broad loins, hip3 and stifle; well thighed and flanked down; medium atomach, straight leg and rather short; heavy arm.wide gambrel joint, a good foot and small tail. Tho Georgia papers report that sharpers are going over the track of Sherman's march to the sea, gulling farmers into the belief that the gov eminent is going to pay for the dam age done at that time and collecting fees in advance for services to be ren dered in putting through claims. Russian army expenses are to be reduced about 4,500,000 a year. The number of men m peace will be re duced to 100,000, and tho term of service extended from three to five years for infantry and artillery, and from four to six years for cavalry, to lessen the expense of recruiting. The fire engines in Italian cities are still the same little hand-pumps used in the beginningof this century; not a single steam tire engine exists on the peninsula, owing to the rarity of fires, but a movement is now on foot to introduce steam engines ac cording to tho American style.
