CLEVELAND PROBABLY ELECTED.
Fob the first time in twenty-eight
years the Democrats seem to have
won in the quadrennial contest and
Grover Cleveland is probably elected
twenty-second president of the United
States. Blaine carried on the fight
against most tremendous odds. At
tacked in front and rear, forsaken by
thousands of his own party, cnt and
hacked by powerful joumals,maligned
and aspersed by equally powerful
journals; his fight -was one long de
fense against the most potent com
bination of forces that ever opposed
an American presidential candidate.
His defeat is not a Democratic vic
tory; his success could not have been
termed a Eepublican triumph. . It
would have been due to his own per
sonal exertions. Two weeks after
his nomination it was evident that
the Republicans could have put up
a more available party candidate; but
his almost unanimous nomination
had demonstrated that Blaine -was
nearest the Republican ohoice of any
candidate proposed at the Chicago
convention.
Blaine's defeat will cause the ex
treme of exultation and regret Many
who voted for him -will doubtless feel
as bitter disappointment as he him
self and those of his own party -who
aided in his defeat will feel a fierce
joy that is the natural outcome of
the jealousy that conscious medioo
rity always entertains toward ac
knowledged ability.
The campaign has been almost en
tirely one of pocket interests. The
result demonstrates that the Repub
licans have lost the confidence of. the
country. It is an expression of pop
ular opinion that constitutes the will
of the highest tribunal in the nation
the people, and one that is fraught
with the most tremendous conse
quences to the country. "He serves
his party best -who serves his country
best," and whether the majority of
the voters of this nation have best
..served the interests of the country by
selecting the man they have is a ques
tion that time alone can determine.
In every state some important
forms of suffrage can bo conferred
on women by statute without change
of constitution. During the past
seventeen years the legislatures of
Kansas, Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota,
Michigan, Colorado, Nebraska and
Oregon have voted to submit -woman
suffrage constitutional amendments
to the voters. In every case but one
these amendments have either failed
to carry a subsequent legislature or,
when submitted, have been defeated
at the polls. In Minnesota alone,
where the amendment was limited to
school suffrage, it was adopted.
Meanwhile the legislatures of eleven
states have enacted woman suffrage
in school elections, and those of three
territories have granted "women full
suffrage, and those of three states
Kansas, Mississippi and Arkansas
have given woman suffrage on the
temperance question by petition.
Thus, within seventeen years, twenty
one state legislatures have voted for
some form of woman suffrage.
"Men of Kochester," said "Webster
on one occasion when visiting the
Genessee valley, "I am glad to see
your noble city. Gentlemen, I saw
your falls, which I am told are one
"hundred and fifty feet high. That is
a very interesting fact. Gentlemen,
Rome had her Caesar, her Scipio, her
Brutus, but Kome in her proudest
days never had a fall one hundred
and fifty feet high! Gentlemen,
Greece had her Pericles, her Demos
thenes and her Socrates, but Greece
in her palmiest days never had a wa
terfall one hundred and fifty feet
high. Men of Eochester go on. No
people ever lost their liberties who
had a waterfall one hundred and fifty
feet high!" J
A New Yoke dispatch on the day
of election said: Ey a blunder in
printing the Eepublican ballots,
about four million were sent out with
Ford electors on the back 1 the
presidential ticket, which vitiates the
ticket in this county, though that in
dorsement is proper for every county
in the state. The blunder was dis
covered yesterday and the tickets
were recalled, but it will cost the
party one thousand votes. That
blunder was a costly one to Blaine.

than Prof. James Glaisher, who,
with a professional aeronaut, made an
ascension in England to the height
of 37,000 feet, or seven miles. He be
came insensible at the height of sue
miles,-and his companion, who was
so nearly frozen as to have lost the
use of his limbs, was obliged to pull
the rope of the eafety valve with big
teeth to descend.
Wb expected that the Oregonian
would give us the "I told you so"
with variations, but in yesterday's
issue it sort of rubs it in. Let up!
"What's the use of telling what every
one knows. There were several hun
dred thousand in the same -way of
thinking. The fight is over. What's
the use of holding a post mortem ex
amination. Where is the Republican
who is sorry that he voted for James
G. Blaine?
Great preparations are being
made in Denmark and Norway to
celebrate the bi-centenary of the
birth of Ludvig Holberg, the father
of the Danish stage on December 3d.
It -will sooth the sorrow of defeated
candidates next week to know that
work has been resumed on the Wash
ington monument

co who was re-elected last Tuesday,
started the first daily paper in Cali
fornia in 1850.
The ratio of representation in the
house of representatives is one to
154,325.
