Asteiuan: Not being able to secure
space ia the Pacific Journal before
this present -week and many of the
matters referred to in the article to
which my name is attached, I send it
to yon with the request that you pub
lish it in your issue of Saturday, No

OfSTKitvibtiE, Oct. l2l), iaSL
Editor I'awjii: Jeurnal:
Sir: lu vour paper of tbo 4th inst.,
I noticed an article written by L. H.
llhoades aud signed 'Centre," which
ailicle I had not intended to notice,
and would have not so done except
for the reason that it has been fol
lowed by others equally untruthful
and unjustifiable. He starts by mis
representing the amount of taxes for
tue year ioi, overwmcu me commis
sioners will have control. He says
the amount is 89,803.35; the county
tax for 18S1, all told, amounts only to
So,19u.39. All other taxes are dis
posed of by law. As to the remarks
which he says Judge Hoyt made last
August iu reference to the county
commissioners being blameable for
expensive litigation, Prosecuting At
torney McFadden says Judge Hoyt
mado no such remarks. As to '"pets,
Mr. "Centre, don't you remember
the last time yon sat as a member or
the county board of equalization, when
the bill of this samo "pet" whom you
now decry, was presented for pay
ment You said in open court that
you gave your sanction to payment
of the bill with greater satisfaction
than to any other which had boen
passed upon during that session, and
that the service had been thoroughly
performed.
"Centre" was in office at that time
not by election, but by appointment!
Ho was defeated at the polls two
years ago for the same position, not
on the Republican ticket either.
Again "Centre' says that this year,
1SS1, the county commissioners did
not sit as a board of equalization,
but took the "pet deputy sheriffs"
assessment and called it equalized
without any change or action what
ever." The records proYo this state
ment to bo a falsehood without justi
fication. Again, he says that tho
prosecuting attorney admits that tho
commissioners are tho parties in er
ror, and should refund the money,
(alluding to sheriff's per diem).
I called Mr. McFadden's attention
to this matter, and ho said emphat
ically that if Mr. Centro mado
that statement ho was a liai
and that no such conversation ever
occurred, or any such admission was
ever made to him, outside of the jury
rooms or elsewhere. Tho facts show
that Mr. Centre made charges against
the shf:fFV"Pei2) for which hot as a
grand 3uror,L,'or'as a citizen, could
neither find evidence nor law to sus
tain, and in bis blind rage and mor
tification at his failure ho assails tho
sheriff, grand jury, judge and prose
cuting attorney.
Now Mr. Editor and citizens of Pa
cific county, this man "Centro" is a
fair type ot the rank and file of what
they call tho "Union party." They
began by misrepresentation and they
havo uot been content with occupy
ing the space of the Journal, but
seek notoriety by publishing in pa
pers outside of tho county the true
character of this so.called Union par
ty. The Astoria, under date of
Oct 17th '84, contained an article
headed "Politics in Pacific County,"
and signed by John Wood as "Itesi
dent" On careful perusal of this ar
ticle, I have come to the conclusion
that it is the joint production of Ben
der, dude would-be auditor, and mis
information furnished by an official
treasury crank. This triplo nonde
script then received tho fatherly sig
nature of John "Wood, thereby render
ing it a long-eared quadrujted, on
paper.
The entire portion of this article,
so far as I am concerned, is not worth
the ink with which to notice it, until
that point is reached where the ex
pressions are used in regard to the
"pet deputy," or deputies, and tho
great expense to the county. Now,
Mr. Bender, don't you remember
when you were a pet deputy sheriff
and assessor? Don't you remember
how near it came to being very ex
pensive to tho taxpayers of Pacific
county when you went overboard
with several hundred dollars of the
people's money in your pocket?
Don't you remember that this same
John Brown, captain of the steamer,
fished yon out, and saved tho coin?
and don't you remember that you
had several good times in getting
dry ? As for Dude "Would-be-Auditor,
he gets dry often; being only a
boy, and these attacks being appar
ently spasmodic, retirement from the
public gaze will perhaps effect a rad
ical change. Yes, then he will be
dble to toot reform in a horn.
Bender Dude and John "Wood havo
forgotten to tell the dear people, for
whom they manifest sucli great so
licitude, that the office of sheriff in
this county does not pay, and that a
man with a family in that office, with
out some other source of revenue,
would starve out in less than six
months. So far as tho barnacle busi
ness is concerned, if you at any time
feel like so doing, come down and I
will assist you in the scrajte.
Without any occasion for so doing,
and without premeditation, a littlo
conversation did recently occur in
the town of Oysterville, between one
of Dude's warmest supporters for
office, who said that Eddie's father
did not want him to run for office,
that Eddie did not want tho office
himself, and did not want to run.
Question Then if Eddie's father
doesnot want him to have tho office,
and if Eddio does not want the office,
then who the d 1 does want him to
have the office? Eche: John Wood.
In conclusion, voters of Pacific
county nothing heretofore published
(in my belief) by this rampant so
called Union party deserves mention
as being any part of the politics of
this county. On invitation by the
editor of the Journal they" have
swarmed into 'public print to such an
extent thatl have not been able for
tho last two weeks to get the smallest
article in even edgewise which
does not look to me very much like
Loomis" Journal or a subsidized pa
per, but I am getting tired of being
crowded out by partisans from Vic
other side. I mean correspondents
in the interest of this miscellaneous
conglomeration called the Union party-
Mr. Editor, only one thing more
this lime and I have done.
I notice in the same article in Tiie
DAibY Astorian of the 17th inst,
that very great solicitude is expressed
as to what I will do when I am no
longer the pet deputy and have to go
to work for a living. I say to this
that you need have no fears on that
score I have already done in this
territory more honest hard labor
than all four of you put together.
But I will seriously think of the
concern which Johnnie seems to
have expressed in my behalf and
(thanking him for the hint) say that
in that case, I think I will oither buy
a little saw mill for myself or get
John Wood to steal one for me if I
can and then I will locate either on
the public domain, or, on rail ,road
land, or, as a last resort, on school
lands and then of course I shall be
come eminently respectablo and
cease to be a pet. Alle same as
Johnny Wood.
Yours respectfully,
C. A. Heed.
How Postage StnmpsHrArc Made.
In printing, steel places aro used on
which two hundred stamps are on
graved. Two men aro kept hard at
work covering them with colored inks
and passing them to a man and girl
who are equally busy printing them
with large rolling hand presses. Three
of these little squads are employed all
the time. After the small sheets of
paper upou which the two hundred
stamps are engraved have been dried
enough, they are sent into another
room and gummed. Tho gum used
for this purpose is a peculiar compo
sition, made of the powder of dried
potatoes and other vegetables, mixed
with water. After having been agaiu
dried, this time on the little racks,
which aro fanned by steam power, for
about an hour, they are put in be
tween sheets of pasteboard and
4ressftd in hydraulic presses capable
ot applying a weignc oi ,uuu tons.
The next thing is to cut tho sheets in
half; each sheet, of course, when cut
contains a hundred stamps. This is
done by a girl, with a large pair of
shears, cutting by hand being pre
ferred to that of machinery, which
method would destroy too many
stamps, t They are then passed to two
other squads, who perforate tho paper
between the stamps. Next, they aro
pressed once more, and then packed
and labeled, and stowed away for dis
patching to fulfill orders. If a sin
gle.gjamp is torn owofersfiway muti
lated, the wholo sheet of 100 stamps
is burned. Five hundred thousand
are burned every week from this
cause. For tho past twenty years not
a single sheet has been lost, such care
has been taken in counting them.
During the process of manufacturing
the sheets are counted eleven times.
Women's Rishts in Finlanil.
Since postal savings banks wero
opened in Sweden and Norway last
autumn, tho demand for similar insti
tutions has been growing more ur
gent in Finlaud, and after due inqui
ries and careful consideration the
Finnish senate has decided to estab
lish postal savings banks after tho
English system in all parts of tho
Grand Duchy. There is no doubt
that to tho poor Finn, who earns a
scant living by hard manual labor, it
will be a great boon to put by a small
sum in a place where it is perfectly
safe, but oven more than tho men, tho
women have cause to rejoice at
the decision of the senate, for
the law establishing the banks indi
rectly establishes one of tho most
urgently needed of women's rights.
According to the law of Finland, no
woman has hitherto been allowed to
acquire any property without tho au
thorization of her husband. This
law will in the present case be annul
led, and a woman will be at liberty to
make use of the postal savings banks
without tho permission of her lord
and master. Considering that it often
depends more on tho manager of the
household affairs than the actual
"bread winner" to economize and
save, the wisdom of tho arrange
ment is obvious.
A Sense of Uoieness.
"Gouenes3" is hard to define scien
tificilly, yet you know what it is vhen
it overcomes you. It is a compound
of lassitude, debility and "the misera
blps;'' flavored with a seasoning of
"the blues.'' Now you know. To get
rid of "goneness," take Brown's Iron
Bitters, aud be-well and strong. Mr.
J. M. Gentry, Hannibal Mo., says, "I
took Brown's Iron Bitters for pain in
the back, loss of appetite, kidney d.s
ease, with good'results."
"Yes," he said, "I attended a bull
fight in Mexico once and I thorough
ly enjoyed it" "I cannot understand
how one can enjoy a brutal affair of
thaf kind," was the reply. "Nothing
brutal about tho fight I refer to."
"Don't you consider it brutal for a
lot of Mexicans to wantonly kill a
bull?" "Yes, but in this case a bull
killed a lot of Mexicans."
