THE POLITICAL FIELD.
butler's opunoif of beegher.
New Yobk. Oct 29. Butler said
yesterday, in referring to Beeclier's
statement that if every man in
Netr York state who has brok
en the seventh commandment
voted for Cleveland he would
be elected by 200,000 majerity:
"It seems hardly possible that snch
language could be used by any man
in a public speech, or by any man
who could be received in decent so
ciety, much less in a Christian pul
pit. Is it possible that there are 200,000
voters in this state who have commit
ted adultery? Nay, many more, for
200.000 are represented simply as a
majority over those who might be
disposed lo vote the other ticket
"Well, I suppose Beecher must be cor
rect in his calculation, as figures are
given with deliberation. As an ex
pert in such matters, Beecher must
know better than L And is this the
result of his teachings and of the
teachings of ministers of tho gospel
all -over the state who have been as
sociated with him? Is this the state
of New York, or ib it the territory of
Utah? I trust that a president elect
ed by such men as Beecher refers to
will not disturb the Mormons, as
their conduct is at least more decent
than that of the 200,000 disciples of
Beecher."
BIiAINE IX "NEW YORK.
New York, Oct. 29. Tho Mail
and Express prints an elaborate re
view of- New York state politics,
showing that Blaine will carry the
state by a plurality of from 30,000 to
40,000. -The full vote of the state
will be 1,300,000, according to tho ra
tio of increase prevalent for twenty
years past. Butler's vote is placed at
45,000, which tho Bopublicans say
will bo drawn exclusively from a
Democratic source, 12,000 votes be
ing accorded him in this city. The
JIail and Express is certain that
tho prohibition vote will not hold to
gether until election day. It goes on
to say that Tammany Hall is in des
petate straits and must elect Grant
mayor, which means that trading and
swapping of every sort will be resort
ed to, Cleveland being knifed with
out mercy. The Mail and Express
is prompted to speak "by card" of
John Kelly's deal with the Eepubli
cans. IK CHICAGO.
New York, Oct 29. -Tho World's
Chicago specials cay: Postmaster
Palmer saw fit to withdraw tho letter
carriers from the public service the
day Blaine was here, and send them
into tho ranks to carry torches. It
now appears that there are complaints
by prominent Democrats that their
mail is being tampered with. The
matter thus far has been kept secret
It has just leaked out that the Re
publican torchlight parade Saturday
night was laid out by military men in
such a way that a good Bharo went
over tho route twice, so that what
professed to be nearly 20,000, by ac
tual count was only a little over 11,
000. Of these a large number, in
cluding some Democrats, were hired
at S3 each.
Deputy marshals are now being ap
pointed by Marshal Jones, to be arm
ed with bull-dog revolvers, and an
effort is being made to reproduce the
scenes in Cincinnati. It is known
that these revolvers are already in
store, ready for use in November.
The marshal said to-day: "If the
Democrats keep this thing up, we
shall have war in Chicago. The
Democrats are doing this. They have
got ihe citizens into a condition of
nervous excitement that needs only a
little breeze to fan it into a flame.
This is criminally outrageous. With
out knowing my intsntions, they have
imputed to mo motives which I have
never entertained. If there is trouble
on election day tho Democrats will
be to blame."
A BITTER DENUNCIATION.
New York, Oct 29 The bitterness
engendered by this campaign is
shown by the following in the Sun:
Henry Ward Beecher's letter to Joy,
which we publish elsewhere, is a won
derful production to come from such
a source. This wretched reprobate,
who seduced his friend's wife and
perjured himself, over and over, pre
sumes to accuse another Qf falsehood
and to threaten him with hell-fire in a
way that might make Satan smile.
No more shameless villain than
Beecher was over seen.''
CALIFORNIA CIiAISIED BY A DEMOCRAT.
New York, Oct 29. A Herald
editorial says: A correspondent who
claims to be well informed writes to
us from San Francisco that, having
made a political tour of California,
he feels confident that tho state will
go for Cleveland by a majority run
ning from 3,000 to 7,000. He estimates
the number of anti-Blaine Republic
ans at 5,000, and adds that the Bepub
lican revolt against Blaine in the
state is increasing, and that the Dem
ocrats are harmonious and solid.
BETTING IN NEW VORK.
New York, Oct 29. The Sun
says: Blaine has the call of betting,
which was very active yesterdays
Heavy bets were made by brokers in
Wall street One was $10,000 to $8,
000 that Blaine would be elected, and
another was S4,000 to S2.800. Odds
on Blaine to carry the general elec
tion vary at betting places from S100
to S80 to S100 to S70. On New York
state the odds are S100 to S90 on
Cleveland, on Indiana $100 to $80 on
Blaine, and on New Jersey $100 to
$70 on Cleveland. On the mayoraltv
the odds are S500to$400 on Grant
against the field, and $100 even that
Grant will be elected by more than
500 majority.

OUR EXrORTSAND IMPORTS.
Washington, Oct 29. Nimmo,
chief of the bureau of statistics, in
his annual report of the foreign com
merce of the United States for the
past year, on the subject of commer
cial and transportation interests of
tho Pacific ccast says: "Tho total
value of the exports of merchandise
from, and imports of merchandise
into California, Oregon and Washing
ton territory during the vear, was
SS3,5&i,874; tho value of ex'ports was
S4G.385.284, and of imports $37,179,
530. The total value of domestic ex
ports from the Pacific coast to for
eign countries amounted during the
year to $45,051,927, of which $31,622,
028, or 79 1-19 per cent, consisted of
brcadstufis. The value of the ex
ports of wheat and wheat-flour alone
amounted to S30,909,31L?'
The great change which has taken
place in tne inuustnai ana commer
cial interests of the Pacific coast is
clearly indicated by the fact that the
value of the wheat crop of that sec
tion during the season of 1882 amount
ed to $44,700,000, whereas the value
of precious metals produced by min
ing operations in the same section of
country amounted to only $17,750,
000. OUR TRADE WITH EUROPE.
It appears that the foreign com
merce of California, Oregon and
Washington territory is chiefly with
tho countries of Europe. In that
trade the value of exports of mer
chandise was SG1,225,433, and the
value of the imports of merchandise
was only $5,156,311. The wheatjf rade
of the Pacific coast constitutes tho
most marked feature of the commerce
of that section of tho country. The
total exports of wheat, including
wheat flour, from California, Oregon
and Washington territory, amounted
during the year just ended to 20.05S,
644 bushels, of which 24,447,363 bush
els were exported from ports of Cali
fornia, 5,334,303 bushels from ports of
Oregon, and 226,963 bushels from
ports of Washington territory. Ex
ports of wheat, including wheat flour
to Europe, amounted to 26,490,710
bushels, and constituted 88.13 per
cent of the total exports of wheat
from the Pacific coast. This wheat
trade with Europe gives employment
each year to a fleet of about 400 sail
ing vessels, which pursue tho routo
around Capo Horn. Tho distance
from San Francisco to Liverpool by
tint route is about 16,000 miles, and
the average time of passage of sailing
vessels is a little more than four
months.
TnE tear's record.
During the year ended Juno 30,
1833, there wero 440 ships cleared
from Pacific coast ports to Europe,
of which 110 sailed under the Amer
ican flag and 330 under foreign flags;
and during the year ended June 30,
1884, there were 333 ships cleared, of
which 95 were under tho American
flag and 293 under foreign flags. The
question as to tho practicability of
securing some shorter and cheaper
route of transportation to the grain
markets of Europe has for years been
one of absorbing interest to the peo
ple of the Pacific coast They have
from the beginning taken a deep in
terest in various projects which have
been advocated for the construction
of a ship canal across the isthmus
which connects North and Sonth
America, and also in the proposition
to construct a ship railroad across
tho isthmus of Tehauntepec.
The Proposed O. It. &. X. Lease.
Philadelphia, Oct 29. The Press
New York special says: Tho Union
Pacific is now moro likely to get con
trol of the O. B. & N. lines than the
Northern Pacific Several prominent
financiers declares that tho Northern
Pacifio has lost all chances of secur
ing tho lease, on any terms, in conse
quence of its recent undecided course.
The relations of Jay Gould, Cyrus W.
Field and others "to the Transconti
nent, which holds a majority of tho
stock, is such that they command the
situation, and are supposed to have
in their favor the influence of Elijah
Smith, president of both companies.
Many O. B. & N. stockholders still in
cline to the Northern Pacific lease as
securing their best interests, believing
that all tho ex-Villard roads should
be closely connected. Thoy aro afraid
of Gould and his schemes, particular
ly for tho investment of stock.
The Oregon Pacific.
Two gentlemen, one of whom was a
former resident of this city, arrived
in Salem yesterday from Yaquina.
They have worked on the railroad be
tween Corvallis and Yaquina for two
and a half months. They express
great disaffection among iho work
men on the road. From their re
ports, the company must either hard
up for capital or a set of thieves.
They could only get about 80 per
cent of tho amount due them, and
thought they were in luck, as often
no more than 60 per cent can be ob
tained for tho company's "paper."
Last week seventy-five carpenters
quit in one day. Not allowing for
any further decrease of the working
force, these gentlemen think the rail
road cannot be completed before Jan
nary 1, 1835. Statesman. -
