Our country 13 so large and its inter ests so varied that it is impossible that it should be otherwise. Upon these special questions these groups may be said to be "solid." Upon till other questions they are in harmony with the general sentiment of the country. One of the oldest of these groups consisted of Pennsylvania and the Kevr England States. For a long time, though differing upon many otLer questions, these staiej were a unit on tlie tarili. xno .rucinc suites may be said to bo "solid" on their pe culiar question, the Chinese. Iu all these aggregations of states there Ls no sectional motive or objective. On the Pacific we are not opposed to the Eastern states per sc. Wo antagon ized some of their early notions on the subject of tho immigration of an unassimilablo and degraded race. But wo were in accord with one or tho oilier of the great parties on all other great questions. In the effort to substitute our deliberately formed opinions for the hazy generalizations prevalent on the other side of the mountains, we made use without stint of all the political power which fell to our Jot. That was all ngnt and proper. It was for that very pur pose that parties wore invented. But tho "solid" South is something totally different. It is "solid" in op position to the North on every prop osition. There is nothing that the North has suggested since it released its military grasp on that section, which has not beon met tvith a nega tive. The South, in a sense, is moro interested in protection now than the North, for its industries are only bud ding. In tho .North, on tho other hand, they are highly organized and better able to withstand tho shock of free trade, though the ultimate re sult would not be doubtful. But tho South will not receive a boon when it is offered by the North. There is to date no trace of the propagation in that region of protectionist prin ciples, though the new enterprises of Georgia and the Carolinas, and tho sugar interests of Louisiana, are ab solutely dependent on them for life. The South, like the scorpion, will sting itself to death sooner than har monize on any subject with tho North. The voice of the "solid South" ever since its states wore re constructed, havo been cast for the Democratic party. There is not the least reason to expect that a singlo one of its 153 votes will this timo bo given to Blaine and the protection of American manufactures and labor. This sentiment of opposition a V out ranee to the other twenty-two states of the Union, is traceable to tho original notions of tho south on tho subject of labor, and moro recently to tho animosity which has grown out of the destruc tion of slavery by the north. All men who lovo their country wero in hopes that this blind, unreasoning, and, in some cases, venomous antagonism would in timo disappear. But it would seem that they are again for tho fifth timo to bo disappointed. Tho campaign, which is now hasten ing to a close, has been conducted in a way not in the least to offend the susceptibilities of tho south. There have been no sectional appeals of any kind. All the propositions discussed have been as broad as tho country. But the south appears to be just as sullenly and irrationally "solid" as it was when tho issues bore directly upon its future This is a political fact of enormous gravity. It is some thing which cannot be thrust asido, even if tho dominant states were so disposed. It means that the south, whose rebellion cost ua so heavily in blood and treasure, is still unchanged, implacable, perhaps revengeful. If tho .north divides while the south hangs so substantially to gether, the results of the war may, in a large sense, yet be reversed. It is not a safe, wise or ordinarily prudent thing to do. If the south could gam possession of the government, it coulu, in connection with a few northern states, amend the constitu tion, remodel the supreme court, and snatch victory out of the overwhelm ing defeat of its rebellion. So long as there is a solid south there must be a solid north. Any other political alignment would be devoid of com mon sense. History will recount how anxious the north has been to drop sectionalism in every form. The present campaign is a most conspicu ous proof of its sincerity in that con nection. But it is not the least use. The magnanimity which it has ex hibited appears to havo been entirely thrown away. The south, it it saw a chance to-morrow, would break off and try to re-establish its old social structure with slavery as the corner stone. It has not been asked to fore go its "solidity" on any propositions but those which are common to the north and the south likewise. There would not be the least loss of dignity in lending support to Blaine. There is no antagonism in him, except that ho aspires to sit in the seat occupied by Lincoln, Grant, Hayes and Gar field. Of course nobody expects that the south ought to change its entire political nomenclature all at once. Its policy, at the moment, means nothing but an insensate war upon anything and everything that the north may advocate or suggest- The ruling spirit iu tho south is defiance to everything northern. Under such circumstances the majority will suc cumb only when it takes leave of its senses. Newspapers, though everybody does not think so, are paid for in advance. If the thoughtless subscriber doesn't do it the editor has to do bo. The paper and ink manufacturers and printers will not wait a year for their pay. fetcott's Emulsion ofInre Codlilvcr OH, -with Hypophonphitcs. Comp ton, of EvansviIle,IndMsays: "I have' prescribed Scott's Emulsion largely. 1 find it very palatable and borne well by delicate stomachs, even children take it readily, and it Is very useful as a cough remedy." Vanderbilt's Ioes. New Yobk, Oct. 19. William H. Yanderbilt visited Wall street yester day afternoon. It was his first visit in three yenra, and all sorts of rumors were afloat. Atany portended ruinous results Not a few went so far as to say that Mr. Vanderbilt's frightful losses of late had drained his store of ready cash, and that his visit was for the purpose of negotiating the sale of $10,000,000 more of government bonds. Mr. Vanderbilt w.-ts engaged in earn est conversation with his broker for fully halt an hour. Mr. Washington E. Connor said that he had heard that certain parties interested in West Shore had been manipulating Lake Shore in an effort to secure control of the stock, and thus make West Shore an equal with Now York Central. Mr. Conner, however declined to say who the West Shore backers were. Many reports are in circulation as to Mr. Vaudorbilt'8 real financial condition. Some do not hesitate to say, after careful computation, that he has lost since January, through the shrinkage of his stock and speculation of his sons, William K. and young Corneel, fully 860,000,000. Ono thoroughly acquainted with his affairs, said this evening: "It was only a few weeks ago that Mr. Vanderbilt ordered F. P. Free man & Go. to sell for him $10,000,000 of his government bonds. This sum was swallowed up in his efforts to sus ain the Now York Central. Now the Lake Shore has struck him, audi tell you he can't stand the pressure." A short time ago, while at a dinner with'a friend, Mr. Vanderbilt Baid that he believed himself to bo worth in the neighborhood of $195,000,000. Of this S70,0000,000 was in government bonds, S25,000,000 of which he has since been compelled to part with. March 1st there were standing in Mr. Vander bilt's name 930,810 shares of stock. Some of these shares have since de clined 50 pej cent, and many in tho street to-da' believed that Mr. Van derbilt had become so dazed by his severe losses that could he extricate himself from his present muddle he would gladly leave the street forever. The Central Pacific Claim More Laud. Sax Fbaxgisco, Oct. 25. The Cen tral Pacific Bailrod Company, by its land agent, William H. Mills, has filed in tho San Franoisco land office a list of lauds selected by the com pany, under acts of congress 1862, 1853 and 1865, being for a section of 123 miles of said road, commencing at the city of San Jose and ending at tho American river bridge in Sacra mento county Theso lands are all settled upon, and tho greater part of them are under cultivation by indi vidual claimants against tho railroad company, undfcr the pre-emption and homestead lavjiof the United States. While all of these claims are adverse to the railroad company, many con flict with each other. A largo num ber of them have recently been re jected by tho commissioner of tho general land office at Washington, and appeals to the secretary, of tho interior havo been taken. Tho total acreago thus claimed by the railroad is nearly four millions. Tho most unprofitable cow is tho ono that pays most profit on her cost of keeping. That will be admitted. Suppose, for instance, that tho yield of a cow that originally cost fifty dol lars and whose keep cost half as much as that of another cow that originally cost a thonsand, was regu larly two-thirds as much as the yield of tho latter. Clearly tho former would be tho most profitable cow, in dividually considered. Very high priced cows are not practical for dai ry purposes, if we only look to the individual. A two-thousand dollar cow cannot be made to pay as much at the pail as a good milker of less price can, unless sho is very extraor dinary. A cow like the lato Mercedes would pay, but she was extraordi nary. But the profits from theso high priced cpws, from our improved breeds, is not wholly represented by their dairy products. Their offspring is valuable, and right here where the great difference exists between the full-blooded and the common cow. Tho outlook for the future is that tho northwest will not only raise the best bread, as it now does, but the choice meat also. Beefsteak does not rapidly go out of fashion. Choice steaks are relishod by the people who love good eating. These people havo learned that number ono hard makes the best bread, and they are now learning that the abundance of cheap, perfect food, and tho dry, pure air of the northwestern country will also raise tho best beef and mutton. Pork must not be left out either, as the country is also well adapted to the growth and prosperity of hogs. This is the coming stock country and tho world is not slow to see it Turn the Vagrants Oat! The weak stomach is said to be the lodging-house of many vagrant dis eases. These can be turned out by strengthening tho stomach, and the digestive organs in partnership. There is nostrengthenerlike Brown's Iron Bitters. Safe, speedy, and sure. Mrs. Henry Corning, Hartford, Conn., says "Brown's Iron Bitters relieved me of general weakness and dyspep sia, and mado me strong." The Nestucca mills havo closed down for the season, and all engaged thore during the season havo moved to Yamhill. During the season the mills turned out from 700,000 to 800, 000 feet of lumber.
