DAII Hj "Mr. Garrett's death reminds me of a story,' remarked an old railroad er not now in service. "It was be fore the war. I was running an en gine on the Baltimore and Ohio. In those days there were a good man slaves setting away from their mas ters in Virginia and making for Penn sylvania. So the owners clubbed together and cstallishcda patrol along the Baltimore and Ohio. For more than one hundred miles they kept an average of three men to every mile where there was timber, watch ing the track nights with dogs and guns to catch any slave that would attempt to cross. One night I was running a freight west. All of a sud den before me iu the light from my head-lamp I saw a colored man stand iucron the tract. He has a heavy stink iii his limul mid was fighting for life with a pack of dogs' Down the track I saw three slave-hunters running toward the negro. I tell you it was a sight that made my blood boil. Acting on the impulse of the moment I shut off steam, whistled down brakes and set up a fearful whistling. I also released the safety valve and made her blow off steam. I hoped to frighten the dogs, and did. Thev turned and looked at the big light of the engine, and some of them ran awav. But the slave was nearly as badly frightened as the dogs. He stood motionless on the track. To this day I can see hi3 fig ure as it was outlined against tho rlnrlmoss. T tcna a statue of despair. Fearing we would run over him I clambered out to the pilot and shout oil in him insfc in time. He roused with a start, jumped to one side as I passed and called to him to get on the train, which was by this time running slow. I watched him get on, when I gavo her a full head of steam, whistled off brakes, and we sailed by the slave-hunters so fast they could not get on. They fired at me, bnt missed. My fireman carried my dinner-bucket back to the negro. He devoured its contents like a starving man. He must have been a peculiar negro, for when my fireman came back there were streaks down his coal-begrimed face. He said that nigger had embraced him with joy and prayed- for him on his knees on the top of a box-car. My bucket was empty when it came back, and then the fireman took his back to our pas senger. It was emptied too. The man was famishing. "Well, that slave got into Ohio, and after an investiga tion my case was laid before Mr. Gar rett. To justify the slave-owners he discharged me, but got me a job on the Pennsylvania Eoad and paid me full wages all the time I was idle." Chivago Herald's "Train Talk." Even the grave and dignified jus tices of the Supreme Court of tho United States have their little fuu now and then. Not long ago, it is said, a lawyer arguing a case before that tribunal used the word "prece dent," accenting the second syllabic. Soon ho used it again, and accented the first syllable. Then whispered Justice "Woods to his nest neighbor, Justice Gray: "He pronouueed it right ihc first lime.' Whereupon Justice Gray asked: "What college were vou educated at. Brother "Woods?,' "At Yale." "Ah! I thought OUR'S Absolutely Pme 'dmW$tKK ItKlTBLICAN TICKET. ''gilgJall' IlIv HOUSE F0UH0EO. 1784-.- J TT3 ISTEECBX or a SUFFERISa KE8YE This no.Mlcr never varies. J Jlisrs. Seaeccy & Jonsso.v, Gentlemen: Liko most of my profession, I am cautious about pinning my faith to any now medicino or curatiro agent. But your BENSON'S CAPCINE POROUS PLASTER has broken through tho barriers and won its way to my good opinion. My attention was first called to it somo eight months ago by a patient of mino Although I was well ac quainted with tho superior oxccllonco of your other plaster and antiseptic dressing, mado especially for tho profession, tho Benson's was comparatively new to mo. I had heard, however, of its merits as a remedy, in cases of Lamo Back, Local Rheumatism, Neural gia. Congestion of tho Bronchial Tubes and Lungs. Dyspepsia, Torpid Liver and tho like affections, and havo since begun to experi ment with it personally. I find BENSON'S CAPCINE PLASTER an exceptionally clean ly plaster to uso. and rapid in its action. Many tests of its qualities, mado in my own family and among my patients havo convinc ed mo that there- is no singlo articlo so valu able for popular uso, nor so helpful in tho diseases I havo named. Should you desiro to do so, you may uso my namo to that effect. Very truly yours, H. H. KANE, A. M.. M, D. Tho genuine havo tho word CAPCINE cut in tho center.
