"Why, look "ere, my friend,' and the old sailor clapped bis Tveather band on the writer's shouldor and looked him sympathiziujily in the eje, 'where was you brnngnp? Tides? "Vby,Lor' bless our figgerhead, this 'bere'h where we make them; the bull tides of creation gels their launcbin' right 'ere in Fundy don't they, Steve?" ;'I ain't a-sayin they don't,' re- piieu oteve, vrno was a iwm &ucuiuicu of the first speaker as regards ap pearance. They were both old retired coasters Captain John bailed from Moncton and Captain Stevo from Grand Pre, both towns in the basin or ilinas, in the old Acadian land, and as old set tiers the writer bad applied to them for the truth and nothing but the truth concerning tho sixty foot wave that was currently reported as having struck Moncton not long since. "Captain Stevo can let more light on to em, perhaps, than 1 kin,' cpn tinned his companion, settling him self on a coil of rope and thumming bis pipe. "Spin that yarn abont tho old Bull 1 up, put in Captain bteve. Captain John lighted his pipe, and filling the fish-house with a clond of navy plug literally sailed in. TITE SCHOONRB BCLIi PUT. '"Well," ho began, "I ain't no hand at yarn spinnin', but I'm tellin' you the truth when I say that I come 'ere on a tidal wave, and I never got out. I reckon I was that sot back I never got over it. It was thus this way. When I was a yonker, about28, tho old man retired on his savin's and made mo master of tho Hull Pup -a scboonerof about sixty tous burden. I sailed from Portsmouth, 2s. H., and one voyage came up to Minns basin with a cargo of coal. Wo come up all right. I thought there was a cur ious rush of water, but I'd never beard nuthiu' about big tides, and thought it ,as the way of tho place. Wc got in about G, I reckon, and jest as we was a-thinkin' about comin' to anchor, on a rock she went, knockiu' every mother's son of us down, ex cept the cook, and be sot down on the red-hot stove, being back to it as sho struck; he come flyin' out of tho door and jumped clean overboard, all afire behind. You see, he was iler, cleaned the lamps and sech, and his pants was that saturated with ile that as soon as ho sot on the galley stove off he went in a blaze. "Lor' bless youP exclaimed the old skipper, growing red and shaking from internal convulsiong, "I ain't got over that laugh yet and it was forty years ago como Christmas. Well, I see she was fast, we could'nt git her off for lovo or money, and six ty foot of water ten foot astern, so we got down sail and turned in, I a reckonin' to go up tho basin tho next day and git a tug to pull her off. Well, as I was a-sayin', we turned in, and in tho morn in' I was woke up by hearin' someone a-fnllin' down the cabin ladder. It was that consarnad feller of a cook, and he lauded all in a heap, jumps to his feet and grabs hold of me. 'Are you crazy?' bays I, jumpin' up, an' it's jest as I'm a-tell-in' you, ho was that scairt he couldn't speak. For a minute I knocked him round and then ho gasped out 'the water!' 'What's the matter with the water?' says J. 'Gone,' says he. 'Gone!' says L 'Yes,' says he'there's been a terrible parch,' and with that he piuted out the hatch. I ran up the ladder, and well, my friend,' said the skipper, "if I wasn't sot back nuthiu' ever was, You've heard that air story about Noah's ark settin' on Mount Arrat? Wall, it wa'nt nuthin' to the old Bull Pup, for when I got on deck there we was perched on a rock fifty feet in tho uir and not a drop of water in sight First I thought I was under a spell or my eyes had gono back on me, but in a minute all hand3 come on deck, and a skeerder lot you never see. PERCHED UPON A BOCK. 'Think? Whv. xen Kdn'f Vnnr what to think, but I made up my uaiuu. tuae uciu. ueuu uu ainnqnaKe, an' there we sot for an honr a wonder in' what to do. Finally I said I'd wade ashore and see what couid be done; so I got a rope over the side and lowered myself onto the rock. Then tire men lowered me to the bot tom, where I Inndprl iin in -mv nrm pits in tho mud. There was a ledge or rocKs near ana i. got onto it, and I tell you tho old Bull Pup looked curious. Jest imamno it. if vnn 1-Jn a rock fifty feet or so high right in a big gulch of mud and nothin' stand in' near, and a sixty-ton fore-and-af-ter perofced on it like a sick chicken. Why, Lor' bless you, it was enough to make a horse laugh. "I cot ashore at last" rnntimio the old sailor, "and there was a gang a settin' there a Jaughin' at me, I was that covered with mud. After they'd had their fun, I says: 'Well, what's up, anvhow?' uuu xuai sot em oil. The long and short of it was that I soon found out that it was onlv tho Fnnrlv tMa nj I waited till it came in and then went aboard in a bot (boat). I mot my old woman up 'ere, and after wo'd got spliced I took up a bit of land, and have been 'ere ever since. But about mat nig tiao its as truo as gospel. Over at Moncton it rr. nun tima matter of sixty foot or more. They v;dn it me oaxuy uae, aii on account of a young naval feller what went ahead and two months afore it como he said it was a-comin'. Sure enough it did come, and tho xrafpr laA so high that it near cleaned out tho nun piace.' THE TIDES OF FUNDY. Tho tides otFnnflv sra nnrliDno o miljar to - almost every one, and though they are remarkable, like tho maelstrom and other marvels, thoy are greatly exaggerated. To thor oughly understand the phenomenon the shape of Fundy bay must be con sidered, and it will be seen that the great daily tidal waves that sweep over the Atlantic, caused by the at traction of th2 sun a id moan, strike the New England coast and tend northward until the great body of water is squeezed into tho narrow limits of tba Jay of Fundy, just as we see a great wave from a steamer entering a brook from a lake. x'he effect is to immediately raise the wa ter level, aud so in Fundy the tidal wave rushes in and suddenly com pres39d within the narrow bounds immediately rises and the water forms a wavo and rushes rapidly onward, filling up the rivers and bays along its passage. A famous place to observe the phe nomenon is in what is called the Mi nas Basin, a branch of the Bay of Fundy, that extends into the country rf "Rv.infTpline and cuts nn in n nnri. ous manner. Especially at the small er towns along the Avon river is tho sight to bo seen that has been won dered at by so many. Windsor is a little town of about threo thousand inhabitants, on the elevation at tho intersection of tho Avon and St. Croix rivers, and is a very lonely place for so small a one. Hero the Avon river is about a milo in width and if you happened to striko tho river from the interior you would wonder what the inhabitants and tho farmers lived upon the bor ders of such a gulch for. You stand upon the edge of an enormous mud crevasse, halt a milo wide and extend ing as far as the eye can reach, and as some ono refers to tho river you put on your glasses and discover in the center of this slough of despond a narrow, trickling stream, about two feet wide. TUE BUSH OF THE WATEBS. Can this bo tho river you ask? It must be. as here are bridges, two of them, but so wofully long and shaky on their pins and high above tho stream that they appear like tho very ghosts of bridges on stilts. From above, tho chasm appears shelved and cavernous in its aspect. The sides seem to grade off into terraces of red and gray rand, until finally tho pan of bottom rock is reached, along which the pseudo river flows. Some thing is expected, as here aro ex pensive dikes, that aro reared to keep the water from the farms in tho back country; then again, vessels lie at tho docks of this inland town, high and dry, miles and miles from water deep enough to float them. Do wo wait an hour or so all this will be changed. We first uotico the silvery thread of water stop in its course, then the wa ter is seen to flow up stream, and if yon turn your head for a fow minutes you find upon again looking that the silvery thread has grown to bo a stream fifty feet wide. Twenty min utes later it is a raging flood, as wido as tho Schuylkill, foaming, rushing and boiling, rising in waves that break against each other, ever push ing on, as if propelled by some mys terious force. In this sudden rush of tho waters animals are often caught; pigs that have wandered out into the mud are overcome by tho onward rollers, and fowl have been surrounded and float ed away on the waves, to be rescued, perhaps, far up the stream, thirty feet higher than tho spot where they were taken up. Flocks of birds frequently follow tho tidal wave, or bore, as it is called, feeding upon the fish that aro cast ashore, and catching them as the tide goes out THE OREAT WAVE. Why the wave should be so high in coming in is explained in different ways. One theory is that it is formed by the tidal current rushing against the current of the river and passing over obstructions of more than or dinary height that tend to push the water up. In the Hoogly river tho wave rises to a height of twenty feet; in the Amazon thirty, and in the Tsientang, China, about the same. The wave in Fundy, however, is not to be compared to these in any re spect As to rapidity, the tide comes in about as fast as an ordinary horse can trot, and a man would have to exert all his speed to escape. The height to whioh the water actually rises differs in different places and depends upon circum stances. Thus, if the sun and moon could pull together, so to speak, and a strong wind to sot in at tho same time, an exceedingly high tide would be tho result It is claimed that it has risen 60 feet at Moncton; at Sackville a 50-feet fall and rise is common; at Quaco, 34 feet and at Parrsboro, opposite Cape Blomidon, about 45 feet These are remarkable figures, and the sight of vessels that say in the morning have been along side the dock, aro now 40 feet below and no water in sight, is still more remarkable.
