It -was an interesting load on account of the fact that the bones represented such a variety of animals and had so many complete skeletons, but a special interest of a rather loathsome and horrible sort centers in the cir cumstance that among tbe skeletons of the animals are many of that most interesting of animals man. In the 522 tons of bones which Hie New Ha ven schooner brought from Galves ton, it is estimated that there were at least half a million animals repre sented. The wild animals furnished the greater share, indicating as did other evidences, that the collection was mostly made on the broad plains and prairies of that state. There were carcasses of buffalo by the hun dred: elks with their fine antlers and sometimes the head, which were tak en off as ornaments; thousands of deer of all sizes, antelope, horses, cows, goats, sheep, panthers, vari ous small-animals, alligators from the bayous, and even the skeletons of snakes. The bones were white from long exposure to the sun. Some had evidently perished in prarie fires, and their skeletons were partly- charred. More had no doubt perished from hunger, want of water, and similar oauses. and some had been shot. Tne men on board the schooner say that the human skeletons were numerous, and the boilers and grinders at the bone-mill laughed and said: 4lThere were always some of them, but that didn't matter." Some of tho human skeletons were intact, skull and all, but most of these were broken dur ing tho loading and unloading. There were a few skeletons that were recog nized as women. Portions of ono skull and other parts of skeletons were shattered as if by bullets, and no doubt there were on board and are now being made into bone dust evidences of manslaughter, murder and desperate deeds of border ruffinn- Assnnlt liv a Pardon Seeker. Albaxy, Oct 20. The city was thrown into excitement this morning by the report that Gov. Cleveland had been assaulted while on his way from the executive mansion to the capitol. Some reports had it that he had been assassinated, and others that he had been fatally injured. The reports spread with marvelous rapid ity, and soon hundreds thronged the capitol and songht out the governor's room to inquire as to the foundation for tho rumors, and tho condition of tho govornor. As is usually the case, there was slight foundation for the rumor on which the superstructure of tho story had been built in pass ing from mouth to mouth. Stripped of all embellishments the facts arc substantially as follews: As Gov. Cleveland was going from tho executive mansion to tho capital, about nine o'clock this morning, ho was assaulted in front of the medical college by Samuel Boone, of Elmira, who struck at the govornor with his right hand. Tho blow was warded off, and the man repeated tho blows several times, without hitting tho governor's face. He then darted toward a pile of cobble-stones, but was intercepted by Dr. Haughton be foro ho obtained a missile. Boone returned to the attack on tho govern or when Haughton seized and held him, and the governor deliberately resumed his walk. CarlSchurz' Views. New York, Oct 20. The Times prints an interview with Carl Sohurz who ascribes the Bepublican success in Ohio largely to the work of pen sion agents. He said: "I don't think it will have any appreciable effect in November, for the simple reason that the plurality secured by the republicans is not large enough to indicate any current in favor of Blaine. I look upon the success of the Bepublican state candidates as purely an artificial thing, which can not affect the result in the election in November." In regard to New York, Schurz said: ".My impressions are very fa vorable. Wherever I have 'been I have found the independent Bepub lican spirit strongly developed. In many cases, the Independents are well organized and active in the work of the campaign. It seems to mo that Cleveland is likely to carry the state by a large majority. There are so many unknown qualities in this campaign that nobody can predict anything with certainty, but the cur rent of political sentiment in this Btate seems to me to be very much in favor of Cleveland and Hendricks." The Fight In Indiana. New Yobk, Oct 20. The Sun's correspondent traveling with the Blaine party telegraphs from South ern Indiana:. Before Blaine's advent the canvass here had become warm. Both sides are very active, so active in fact that Blaine's visit to tho state can hardly increase tho energy of the fight The Bepublicans claim to be as confident of carrying the state as they wero of Ohio one -week before Tuesday last One of the directors of tho Benublican canvass. Gen. Wil liams, who is here to take charge of xiaine s tram, says tne state can be carried by an increase over the major ity of 1880. He predicts a majority of 8,000, but concedes a loss to tho Bepublicans of 3,500 from the Pro hibitionists and Germans. He says the Bepublican ticket will gain 1,000 veteran soldiers, 1,000 young men, 2,000 Irish-Americans, and 1,000 Pro tectionists. The 1,500 net gain added to Garfield's maioritv of 1RS0 (ri his estimate of 8,000. Hcott'sKmHlsIoa ef Pare Cod Iilrer OH, TrltRIIypepheHphltCK. " Paris, Oct. 20. General Da Lisle advises the government to the effect that a forceof 20,000 will be neces sary to continue offensive operations, and repel the invasion of Tonqnin. The Figaro says the plan of cam paign General De Lisle has presented the government provides for the for mation of two columns, of 10,000 men each. The first column is to oppose the coming of Chinese from Kwaug Si. The base of operations of this column will be Phulang, and the ob jective points Baclo and Laug3on. The second column is to operate against China from Yun Nan, having Tong Hoa as a base, and Loa Koi and Caobang as objective points. General Briere De Lisle telegraphs from Hai-Phong, tinder date of to day, that large masses of the enemy appeared in the Bed river region oil the 13th inst and made an attack on Tayen Kwong. They were defeated with great loss. No French were killed. Tho wounded are doing well. . . Butler's- Movements. Oswego, Oct. 10. Seven thousand persons heard Butler make his speech to night. B. G. Holbrook of the Vul can iron works introduced the gener al. In speaking of lawlessness and murder in the South, the general excited thunders of applause. He said: "If you'll elect me president I will either go into my se;it or into my coffin, and I will either stop these murders north and south, or I'll have a lot of first-class funerals to keep me busy." Of Parson's story the general said: "He styles himself General Par&ons. He may possibly have been a sutler in tho confederate army. He did not like me then, and he does not like mo now. He is try ing to get even with me bv telling lies." The "Times" Appeals to the Democracy. New Yoek, Oct 20. The Times in a leading editorial addressed to the Democratic leaders, exhorts them to dispose of Butler, cencluding: It is in your hands to prove that the Dem ocratic party, so long, so deeply dis trusted by the country, is capable of being an effective instrument of hon est government. You have a candi date whoso election will bring about this end. You have honest Bepubli can allies enough to secure that elec tion if you do your duty. If you fail tho doom of the Democratic party is sealed. Its downfall will be not only disasrous but disgraceful. Two 3Ieu Drowned in the Columbia. SroKAxn FaiiIs, Oct 20.
