In the olection Tuesday, according to there ports so far received, the political sit uation "was reversed. The plurality for the Republicans is likely to reacli 20,009. In the October election in 1880, the Bepublicnns had a plurality of 16,005. But iu the presidential election of November following they rolled up a majority for Garfield of 31229. It may be assumed, therefore, if there is now no exaggeration, that the majority in Ohio next month for Blaine will "run from 35,000 to 40,000. All this shows that the Republican column is unshaken. On that basis alone the presidential election may be said to be decided. In 1880 Garfield carried every northern state except California (where he got only one vote out of six), Nevada nnd New Jersey. He had. 214 electorial votes out of the 3G9, of which the college was then composed, and this, though he had, as above stated, lost seventeen north ern vote3. But the states in which Garfield failed may bo regarded as among the surest for Blaine now. California, with her vote increased to eight may be transferred without much doubt to the Republican col umn. Our state is so deeply inter ested in protection that any other course would positively be suicidal. The same may bo said of Now Jersey, which has nino votes, and in which a largo and profitable silk industry has grown up under protection. Nevada, for mixed reasons, may also bo re stored to the Republican column. There are now 401 votes in the elec toral college. Of these, 153 belong to the sixteen southern states. The result in "West Virginia rather indi cates that the south is just as solid as ever. Its 153 votes, unless there is a break in Florida or Louisiana, may, therefore, bo sot over to Cleveland without much hesitation. This leaves 248 northern votes. Blaine can bo elected without the thirt-six votes of New York, provided he carries all the others. In that case he would havo 212 votes, or a majority of 11. He can lose Now lork and New Jersey and yet win. On the other hand, if the Democrats should carry New York the prizo would not be within their grasp. Tho 15d votes ot tho solid south added to those of that state make only 189 votes. "Where tho other twelve votes aro to como from cannot easily be figured out New York and New Jersey would not givo them the vic tory. There is a political dicker in "Wisconsin, out of which six votes aro expected. But the chances are against tho success of the scheme. Tho Democrats and Butler men have com bined on tho basis of bix electoral votes for the Democrats and five for the Butler men. But "Wisconsin is as reliable a Republican state as Iowa, It gave Garfield a majority of 21,603 over tne combined vote ot the Demo crats and Greenbackers. The Result In Washimrton. "Washington. October 15. To no community was the result of the Ohio election a greater surprise tuan to that of "Washington, as well to Dem ocrats as to Repuplicans. Tho ex tremo confidence on the part of tho Democrats operated to dishearten tho Republicans and their enthusi asm of a week or more past gave place almost to despair. Hamilton county was conceded to the Demo crats by a majority not less than 2,000, but thevote of Cuyahoga was relied upon, although not very hope fully, to offset this. Therefore, when the victory in Hamilton county was announced tho Republicans were frantic with joy. The Democrats profess to belittle their loss, asserting that Ohio is at heart a Republican state when tho full vote is brought out, and that nothing less than a Re publican victory could have been expected. They deny that the result will seriously affect New York, which is after all the battle-ground. There are loud complaints of treachery in Hamilton county, based upon tho alleged fact that S60.000, said to have been equally distributed anong tho Democratic managers in sixty precincts, was lodged largely in their pockets, and that not over 10 per cent, was expended for election pnrposes. The Republicans say tho result demonstrates that the German and Irish vote was largely influenced by their antagonism to free trade. Besides, the Ohio regiments during the lato warehibraced a large number of German and Irish citizens, and they could not reconcile themselves to tho fact that 153 electoral votes from the south should play so im portant a part in the election of a Democratic president The enthusiastic admirers of Blaine claim that his presence in the state electrified the people and carried everybody by storm, especially tho Irish. They assert that Blaine made tho campaign on his own plan and paid no attention to the schemes of the local managers, and that alone accounted for the great victory. Colonel Dudley returned to "Wash ington this afternoon and was over whelmed with congratulations and commendations. The commissioner of tho general land office has decided in a recent casein Umatilla county that final proof not made at a county seat be fore a register, receiver county judge or county clerk, is not sufficient proof. Florida expedts to raise 3,000,000 boxes of oranges this season. Sealed and Signed. Over his nortarialseal, Mr. Harry "Williams, Greenville, California, cer tifies that Mrs. A. Williams was suf fering with pain in the back, so se vere she was unable to turn and was delirious. "When the case assumed an alarming stage, one application of St Jacobs Oil was mado, externally, after several remedies had been tried andfailed. The patient slept soundly until morning and got np entirely cur ed. He thinks it his duty to endorse the great conqueror of pain. A Furniitiable Jlcnaro. The fastest sea-going vessel afloat is the new Chilian cruiser Esmeralda, that recently obtained the mean speed of ISif knots per hour on a sea trial. The British cruiser Tsis, hitherto the fastest man-of-war, has a maximum speed of IS knots an hour. She is, however, unarmored and compara tively lightly armed. The Esmeral da may be described as a casemated monitor, with high freeboard, and every essential to make her seaworthy for any voyage. She carries 10-inch, 25 ton, breechloading, very long rango bow and stern guns, that sweep through more than 18 degrees ot horizon, protected with hteel shields, aud capable of penetrating 20 inches of iron armor. Besides theso she carries on each broadside three Cl inch breechloading rifles, capable of penetratiug 11 inches of iron armor. These powerful guns are worked by tho most perfect system of labor-saving hydraulic machinery yet devised. Tlit Esmeralda carries in addition to the above Hotchkiss' revolving cannon, Gardner and Gatling re peating guns, mounted in every available place, even in her tops (mastheads), all protected with stee shields. These latter weapons are mainly for defense against torpedo boats." The striking features of the Esmeralda are her moderate sizo and comparatively light armor and small draft of water, her high speed and her powerful armament. It is an open secret that she was designed with especial reference to the possi bility of trouble between tho United Stales and Chili, and to the opportu nity offered to raid our defenceless Pacific ports. Compare tho Esmer alda as she is with the Chicago as she is promised. But comparison is impossible. The Esmeralda could as easily whip the Chicago as the Merrimac did tho old Cumberland in the beginning of our war. There was a man named "Watkins in a confederate regiment during tho war, who was well on toward middle life; but when his wife came to camp one day he seemed to be young by comparison. There seemed to be a century's difference between them; and the man, who was as ngly as a Georgia cracker usually is, was hand some beside his wife. "How did you ever come to marry such an old witch as that?'' asked one of his superior officers, taking him aside. "Well, you see," said the man, rathor sheepishly, "her mother kept a little grocery store down on tho corner of tho street where I lived, and I used to go in there and get what I wanted to eat One day I found tho old wom an's ugly daughter all alone in the store. Just as I came in I heard tho clink of silver in -the loose rafters overhead, and theold woman count ceunt ing: 'One, two.' three,' and so on. I sat down andadbId'v'B'ib-thVgirl; and the old woman up-stairs kept on counting. By and by sho was away up in tho hundreds four hundred, four hundred and fifty, five hundred. I courted that girl harder and harder as the old woman got higher. Final ly she stopped at nine hundred. 'Great Scott I' I said to myself, 'Nino hundred dollars!' 'Beloved Sukey will you be mine?' She said she would, and wo wero married that saame day." ""Well, is that all?'' "No; there were only thirty of those silver dollars; the old woman counted them over thirty time3." Perhaps it would be well to investigate a little every time. Frank Hatton, postmaster general and editor, was on a sleeping car from New York to "Washington re cently, and when he got up in the morning, at his destination he found that his pants had been stolen. Tho passengers were getting off the car, and all sympathized with Hatton, but none of them offered him their pants. He wrapped a red sleeping-car blan ket around him, took a feather duster and placed it down his back so tho feathers waved over his head, and stood in the aisle of tho car, when every body laughed except tho car porter, who turned pale. A friend said, uWell, Frank, what aro yon go ing to do?'' Frand looked at him self in the glass and said: "Well, I guess I will take a hack and go up to the secretary of the interior, and ask to bo sent back to my reservation. President Arthur, who happened to be on board, lent Mr. Hatton tho flannel case to his double-barreled shot-gun, for pants, and he got homo all right Llrer Complaint. Yes; you may well say" complaint" for if there is anything makes a poor mortal complain, it ia to havo his liv er out of order. The liver is the great scavenger of the body. It gathers up refuse, works it into bile, and then works the biio off. It has a heavy contract; and sometimes fails. Then there is a general disturbance. That disturbance is quieted by taking Brown's Iron Bitters. Mr. "W. A. Brown, of Marshalltown, Iowa, says, "Brown's Iron Bitters relieved me of liver complaint after other remedies had failed."
